The brief was to create a recognisable British bird that would appear as a repeat pattern for Womenswear shirts. Immediately, I opted for a Blue Tit. It’s delicate, feminine and suits the Charles Tyrwhitt brand.

I sketched a singular bird and brought it to life on Illustrator. I went for colours that are soft and would compliment the Womenswear customer. The repeat was created by altering the birds position and creating enough breathing space.

Mid season this went on to be the top 3 performers and went onto be one of the most successful Womenswear prints for Charles Tyrwhitt.

At Charles Tyrwhitt we create monthly catalogues that are sent out across four territories: UK, USA, Germany and Australia.

From the Designers creative of the UK version we build the other territories. Our task as an Artworker is a detailed one. We decide the layout and input the correct copy to ensure consistency across all campaigns.

The four territories have their own challenges: different print specifications, copy terminology and varied product focus.

At the reproduction stage I proof read and ensure the files are print ready before the final approval.

One of the main territories that I work on is Germany. This is one of the biggest in terms of mail order, closest behind the UK.

The German catalogue require a great deal of work and attention. From ensuring the layout and selling copy is correct. To then translating the body copy and graphical elements into the German language. The length of German words and copy creates design challenges that we must overcome. We then ensure that the German matches the UK catalogue as close as possible.

The next stage is to send the book to a German proof reader and marketing professional. I then ensure all amends that come back are applied correctly.

The brief was to create the well known British Pashley bike as a repeat pattern for Womenswear shirts. The main objective was to capture the heritage, elegance and femininity of the bike.

I sketched the bike and then created the pattern on Illustrator. To enhance the femininity I added a basket and made the wheels symmetrical. In turn creating a delicate motif. I then created a dense sporadic repeat, with the bikes at various sizes. Even though I did make a repeat pattern, at first glance you would not know it was.

This has been a top 5 best seller for Womenswear shirts at Charles Tyrwhitt. It has featured throughout the books and covers.

The New Customer Acquisition is an integral part to build your customer base in any company. The UK territory is the biggest and most successful in Charles Tyrwhitt. They have the largest mailing campaign in the company. Australia is the latest territory thats been added to the list of countries Charles Tyrwhitt mail to.

I work closely with the UK and AUS marketing team, producing varied material from catalogues, inserts and vouchers. These are found in top publications, such as The Sunday Times. My role is to design and artwork these materials to a high standard, following different specifications for varied publications.

Each campaign holds it’s own special offer for the customers. In the design, I ensure that the specific offer is prominent in the covers and throughout the book. They say you have about 15 seconds to capture a customers attention. Therefore, it is key that we do this with our design and offers.

From creative to repro stage I ensure the campaign is delivered efficiently, to a tight schedule and deadline.

Project: Charles Tyrwhitt Acquisition Catalogues



ROUND BUILDATHLETIC BUILDSLIM BUILD

I was asked by the web team at Charles Tyrwhitt to create a series of illustrations depicting the Slim, Athletic and Round build of the human body shape.

The purpose is to help customers define their body shape before they purchase their shirt. I created a sketch

of an Athletic body and completed the design on Illustrator. I then created the other two shapes to complete the body shapes. The web team have since mocked up how the illustrations will work on the website, due to be featured later in the year.

Client: Personal Work

These are examples of my personal projects for book cover designs. I read the books and decided to do my own spin on their covers. For these I used pencil as my medium as it suited the theme and tone of the stories.

The Long Rain is a science fiction story where four men have crashed on a planet and it’s always raining. They end up being driven insane by the endless rains. I decided to place a man in a World War Two outfit to contradict the sci-fi element to the book. I also added diagonal rain with the mans hands covering his face in dispair of the constant rain.

Nights At The Circus, I chose the main character Sophi Fevvers and made her the star of the design. I drew a detailed pencil drawing with the background predominately dark and kept her mostly in white giving her a glowing feel.

Project: Book Cover Designs

The brief was to create a pretty repeat pattern capturing falling feathers. The main objective was to keep the fluidity and lightness of the feather whilst using bold beautiful colours.

I sketched several feathers, all of different shapes and sizes. I wanted each of them to look unique and special. I then used watercolour to bring the feathers to life. I combined my initial sketches and watercolour on Illustrator. A dense repeat pattern was then created capturing the descending feathers.

This has been tipped to be another best seller for the Charles Tyrwhitt Womenswear range.

I set myself a brief to create a repeat pattern of the Dragonfly for Womenswear shirts. The main objective was to capture the well known Dragonfly but stylize it with beautiful colours.

I sketched a singular Dragonfly and simplified until I was pleased with its beauty. On Illustrator I spent quality time playing with the colourways, opting for warm and complimenting tones. I wanted to capture an illustrative version of the Dragonfly, not a realsitic one. A repeat was created using different sizes and positions to create a delicate pattern.

This pattern could be used in a variety of ways, not only for Womenswear, but Homewear and Stationary to name a few.

Charles Tyrwhitt feature press ads in top publications, such as The Sunday Times and The Telegraph. This is a key part to New Customer Acquisition.

From a marketing brief I design and artwork the press ads accordingly, ensuring offers and campaigns are promoted to a high standard. The product focus in these ads vary throughout the season. The UK customer base is currently a mid to late 50’s male, working professional and classic in his style. We have found that season to season the knitwear sells above all other product categories.

I work from the specifications sent from the publications to ensure it is delivered to a tight deadline.

I was set a project to create the Artworking Guidelines that would help any new starter or freelancer at Charles Tyrwhitt. The aim was to make the key rules clear, concise and an easy to use document.

From the Brand Guidelines that was set by the Design team, I pieced together the Artworkers Guidelines. This depicted the day to day tasks at Charles Tyrwhitt for an Artworker. From the layouts, paragraph styles and language differences between the territories. Their is now a printable PDF that will always be an aid to whoever needs it.

Client: Trowbridge Gallery

Trowbridge Gallery is a Fine Art reproduction company, producing quality prints of illustrations and photography of varied artists. I worked closely with the Graphics department to produce the Bi-annual which was sent out worldwide.

These are 16 Lyndi Sales images I was responsible for in the catalogue. From scans of Sales’ work, I re-touched the images to look closely as possible to original piece. In order for consistency, I created a new background texture and carefully cut out each floral design.I placed and framed each image. I then superimposed the images above a sofa or bed to give the customer an idea of scale and size.

Client: Plum Pudding Illustration Agency

Plum Pudding Illustration is a children’s book publishing agency. They work with successful illustrators worldwide.

I was responsible for cropping and resizing over 150 promotion cards for each of their artists. Each artist had a wide selection of work and it was a matter of selecting the best element that would promote the artists to the full.

I assisted the agents in the text layout design for their children’s books. It was a great learning curve knowing where to enhance certain words in the story. Not only does it look visually appealing but it helps parents and kids to make the story experience more exciting for everyone.

Client: Personal Work

I was asked by a friend to illustrate and design her wedding invitation. The objective was to create an enchanted forest, full of fun and imagination. I was also asked to include the venue of Cambridge Cottage in Kew Gardens.

It was a great project to work on, as their were so many elements to the design. I particularly enjoyed capturing all the various animals. The duck with the hat on really adds to the quirkiness of the piece. The reverse of the invite clearly gives all the information needed for the guests.

The couple went on to use various elements for their website to the wedding and honeymoon.

Client: Personal WorkProject: ‘Jack The Black Fat Cat’ Book

This is a university project where I created my own children’s story, taking inspiration from my own beloved cat. It tells the story of Jack The Black Fat Cat, who leaves home for the day and has an adventure at the zoo.

It’s one that I wrote and illustrated entirely, with the aim of making an engaging tale that children and adults alike would enjoy. I had great feedback on my little book and people enjoyed the characters I created. Of course, Jack was the most popular and everyone wanted to know where Jack would go next on his adventures.

The book was created using mixed media, taking inspiration from my all time favourite illustrator Charley Harper. The backgrounds were made using paint and I kept the colours muted. The characters were created using paper cut outs and details highlighted using coloured pencils.
