Formal expression is an essential part of architecture’s language. In this project the expressive form communicates the story of mimicking and pulling of natural landform. The pulling or lifting of the land will create unique spaces and pathways for a leisure walk of half a mile on Pinckney Castle island. The spaces beneath the lifted pathways will be occupied as a “Welcome Center”, gallery space, relaxation area for visitors. The pathways are the centric unique design of this project.

The pathways function as multi-use system. The structure itself includes the functions of sitting, shading, sun-bathing, relaxing, and learning. The emerging pathways provides opportunities for visitors to interact with the island at different elevations from low to high and vice-versa. The different height levels will create different wonderful experiences for visitors. Some paths will extend out to the sea, and it will give a feeling of walking on water.

Cripe Competition: Emerge

This project is to be net zero and self-sustaining. The materials will be of natural local materials. This will reduce the shipping and building cost, and reduce environmental pollution. The island is in the phase of erosion by the ocean. To prevent further erosion and deterioration, native vegetation and stones/rocks will be placed at the area of most damage. This will also provide opportunity of re-shaping and growing the island.

Formal expression is an essential part of architecture’s language. In this project, the expressive form communicates the story of the living machine as well as provides a transition from the built-up urban fabric to the open landscape of the urban park. The terracing architectural form reflects how the living machine cleans water as it flows from the highest to the lowest point. These terracing geometries ripple into the landscape giving the effect of transitioning and blending

with the urban fabric and the park’s landscape. The living machine runs through the whole building so users can learn by observing how the water is naturally cleaned. As users walk through each level of the space, the sequential stages of the cleaning process are presented. The function of this building allows users to interact with the built environment by ascending up the

Terracing Waterfall

green roof to observe how rainwater is also collected and orchestrated to slowly terrace down into the “wetlands” area where it meets the purified water emerging from the living machine inside the building. The green roof also provides sitting areas for users to enjoy the performances up high viewing the park stage to the south, acting as an outdoor patio/auditorium space.

The formal expression of this project is based an idea of stepping up to reach to the sky. The stepping pattern of the walls gesture the idea of stepping up to a higher level of success. The placement of the concrete walls and transparent glazing present an obvious gesture of opaque and transparency. This allows visitors to view into the building or look out of the building. The stepping pattern is designed based on the use of fixed concrete grid metric. This will easily show scale with the

grid being three feet by four feet. The design of the stepping pattern also appears on the roof where one space is taller than the other. With the height difference of every other roof, it gives visitors different experiences as they advance from one end to the other. This project is an attempt of designing a sustainable architecture that reuses rainwater, take advantage of using natural lighting and ventilation. The water collection roof is designed similar to that of the World Trade Center

Workforce Center

Memorial’s water fall. The roof contains rows of half-pipe concrete form with even small half-pipe forms created at the edge of the roof. The roof is slightly slanted to guide the rainwater into the water collection system. The landscape of the project is designed where visitors can enter from all four corners, and some will walk across the bridge ontop of the water collection ponds and through the small canopy of vegetation.

Cabin in the Woods

The purpose of this group project is learning to construct a construction document. The group, containing three members, thought of the best solution on designing a sustainable cabin that provides a cozy environment for its users. The spaces within the structure is placed with careful decisions. The formal expression of this project is mimicking the landform, creating different experiences from high to ground level. The elevation differences functions as a path guider for its users.

The center portion of the structure contains a green roof space for the users to relax on, and it functions as a rainwater collection system and direct solar blocker to keep the interior spaces at a comfortable temperature all year round. The facades of the structure are designed so it can capture any solar energy/heat while keeping the cold wind out during winter. During the summer, the facades will keep the heat out, and the operable windows can be

used for natural ventilation. The facades of the structure have multiple different textures as a way todifferentiate spaces from public to private, and from high to low ground spaces. The smaller the texture, the more private the space is.

PersonalI really enjoy working as an architectural designer. Knowing that I am able to create unique shelters for clients, changing a part of the world, making the earth greener, and sustaining the environment makes me feel accomplished.

When I was younger and before I went into architecture school, I had a goal of creating a shelter for the homeless and orphans, and this is still an important goal for me that I hope to accomplish one day. To help accomplish this goal, I want to start by gaining knowledge and experience in the real business world. From there, I will be able to continue accomplish this goal.

When I am set on one goal, I am willing to work hard until this goal is accomplished. I never had a thought of quitting even when there is a lot of obstables that I need to pass through. I am considered to be a hardworking person and a quick learner that never quits till the end.

I feel that I would be an excellent asset to your company. I have a very strong work ethic, I am a quick learner and my skill set is strong. From past experience, I know that I can handle any task given to me. What’s more, I am eager to learn from the opportunities and resources available within your company and I hope to have the chance to meet and learn more about those opportunities available. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns and thank you for your time.
