EMiLA focuses on the development of the variety of cultural landscapes in Europe. It offers teaching on landscape identity research across all of the European regions, design studio’s on large scale and ‘cross border’ projects and research on the influence of European politics on the regional landscape.

EMiLA brings together five internationally renowned centres of Landscape Architectural education; the École Nationale Supérieure de Paysage Versailles/ Marseille, the University of Edinburgh/Edinburgh College of Art, the Leibniz Universität Hannover, the Architecture Academy of the Amsterdamse Hogeschool voor de Kunsten and the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya Barcelona. The partnership provides long-term collaborative networks between students and Academics. Beyond this common strength, the philosophy of each school adds a specific quality to the teachings. The EMiLA curriculum allows the students to benefit from q range of expertise within one curriculum.

Candidates interested in joining EMiLA should apply directly to one of the five partners as EMiLA students will initially be drawn from the existing student cohort of their home institution with the aim being to recruit 25 students in total. EMiLA will be a two year, four semester Bologna compliant programme. The first and last semesters will be studied at the home school/university; the second and third semester will be studied at two other

institutions of the network, meaning that by the end of the programme, the student will have had experience of three of the participating schools/universities.

Two common modules will provide extra knowledge on European topics. EMiLA offers an e-learning module on European planning cultures and processes, and a Summer-school between the two exchange semesters. At the Summer-school students and academics work together on contemporary landscape architectural projects of European relevance. In earlier Summer-schools, students and academics have travelled to the region “Altes Land” close to Hamburg (2009), to the Orkney Islands in Scotland (2010), to the rural Northeast of the Netherlands (2011) and Torroella de Montgrí, Catalunya (2012).

All the partners are jointly working towards the es-tablishment of a common European Master Degree. In this, they have been sup-ported by the European Union's Lifelong Learning Programme.

The common e-learning and Summer-school modules are taught in English. The remainder of the curriculum is taught in the partner's working or national language. Further information about the EMiLA philosophy and curriculum, how to apply, funding and any additional requirements can be provided by contacting the partners directly or at:

Working in international teams has an increasing relevance

for Landscape Architects. Many competitions are announced

Europe-wide. Transnational developments influence the

everyday work of Landscape Architects which increases

the demand for teaching and research on a European scale.

From 2012 onwards, the European Masters in Landscape

Architecture (EMiLA) will provide students with a

programme of study specifically developed to address these

issues.

AHK Amsterdam School of the Arts – Amsterdam Academy of Architecture

Department of Landscape Architecture

The Amsterdam Academy of Architecture prepares students to practice spatial design as a discipline at the interface of art, science and technology. Architects, urbanists and landscape architects are trained with constant mutual exchange between the disciplines. This interdisciplinary approach is a hallmark of the courses given at the Academy. The programme combines study and work experience. Half of the course consists of design education, the other half consists of acquiring work experience through relevant part-time employment.

UPC Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya

Escola tecnica superior d´Arquitectura a Barcelona (ETSAB)Escola Superior d'Agricultura de Barcelona (ESAB)

ESTAB specializes in the integration of the local urban design tradition with contemporary trends of Landscape Architecture such as public space design, landscape ecology, innovation in restoration of ecosystems, tourism, etc, thus revealing the specificity of Mediterranean local conditions. The programme is design-oriented and combines studio with theory courses taught by experts from other Departments such as Agronomy, Biology and Engineering of the UPC.

LUH Leibniz Universität Hannover

Fakultät für Architektur und Landschaft

The Master in Landscape Architecture at Leibniz Universität Hannover is centred on intensively-supervised studios which help the students to reflect on their own creative activities as well as developments in contemporary society. Hannover’s academic philosophy is to combine research and intuition, thus allowing innovative design solutions to flourish. The shaping of the landscape through infrastructure, waterways, renewable energy or traffic systems, as well as the complex synergies between ecological processes and human interventions, form part of Hannover’s core design and research.

ENSP Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Paysage Versailles/Marseille

ENSP is the lead co-ordinator of the EMiLA project.

ENSP has created a new generation of landscape architects who can answer urban, suburban and agrarian modernisation. ENSP’s area of specialisation lies with project-orientated design teaching in studios. Emphasis is placed on the physical, geographical and human uses of the landscape. The studios focus attention on the opportunities inherent to the site, its surface topography and hydrology as well as invisible relationships such as the dialogue with history.
