Emergency Evacuation Procedures

If Fire Alarm Sounds• Immediately evacuate the building via the shortest and safest route. Do not

use elevators. If not in Immediate danger grab essential items only such as coats, purses, and cell phones.

• If you notice smoke, use an alternative escape route. • Test doors with the back of your hand before opening them. If the door is

warm or if you notice smoke, use an alternative escape route. Check paths for safety before proceeding and close doors behind you.

• Crawl low if you have to go through smoke. • Go to a safe area or to a pre-assigned exterior area for your building. • If you suspect that someone is missing or trapped, contact the emergency

personnel outside the building. • If you are trapped during a fire emergency, close all doors between you and the

fire. Stuff cracks around the doors to keep out smoke. Wait at a safe window and signal/call for help. If there is a phone in the room, call the fire department or 911 and tell them exactly where you are.

• Stop, Drop and Roll if your clothing catches fire.

Emergency Evacuation Procedures

If You Discover A Fire • Leave the fire area and close the door to the area. • Sound the fire alarm. • Do not use elevators. A fire can disrupt the operation of elevators and trap occupants inside. • Immediately evacuate the building via the shortest and safest route. (Proper use of fire

extinguishers within extinguisher limits and by trained individuals is optional but should not be attempted until building alarm is actuated and people are evacuated)

• If you notice smoke, use the alternate escape route. • Test doors with the back of your hand before opening them. If the door is warm or if you notice

smoke, use an alternative escape route. Check paths for safety before proceeding and close doors behind you.

• Crawl low if you have to go through smoke. • Go to a safe pre-assigned exterior area for your building and contact your All Clear Manager. • Await emergency response personnel at safe location and direct them to the scene. • If you suspect that someone is missing or trapped, contact the emergency personnel outside the

building. • If you are trapped during a fire emergency, close all doors between you and the fire and stuff

cracks around the doors to keep out smoke. Wait at a safe window and signal/call for help. If there is a phone in the room, call the 911 and tell them exactly where you are.

Emergency Evacuation Procedures

Once You Have Evacuated • Find the your All Clear Manager (For students it will be your

instructor) • If you suspect that someone is missing or trapped tell your All

Clear Manager and they will contact firefighters, police officers, or ambulance personnel on scene.

• Do not re-enter the building until instructed to do so by the fire department or All Clear Manager.

• Follow directions of fire and police personnel and the team leader and all clear staff.

• Never reenter the building to save your personal belongings. • Stay calm.

Lock Down Procedures

Active Shooter• Exit building if possible and if you are not putting yourself at

risk. Once outside get away from the building and take shelter. (Be aware that officers arriving at the scene do not know who the perpetrator is. Keep your hands visible and do not run towards the responders)

• Go to the nearest room and lock yourself in and hide. • Do Not pull fire alarm• Stay calm and make smart decisions• If you are backed into a corner and no other alternative then

fight back, throw things at the perpetrator, use a fire extinguisher, anything is better then doing nothing.

Staff Shutdown Procedure

• Evacuation• Remain Calm• If situation permits, instruct students to only grab essential

belongings, last person out should turn off lights and shut door • Keep students and co-workers calm and direct them to the

correct evacuation routes • If exit is blocked find the next nearest exit.

• Shelter In Place• Ask all people to stay in the building and head to the designated

area• If possible allow people to contact loved ones• Lock all exterior doors and windows• Close all air vents and turn off all mechanical HVAC systems

x WATER. Amounts for portable kits will vary. Individuals should determine what amount they are able to both store comfortably and to transport to other locations. If it is feasible, store one gallon of water per person per day for drinking and sanitation. Store in plastic containers or use commercially bottled water

x FOOD and UTENSILS, at least one to three-day supply of non-perishable food that could include ready-to-eat meats, juices, high-energy foods such as granola or power bars.

x NOAA WEATHER ALERT BATTERY-POWERED RADIO and extra batteries. AM/FM Radio or Hand Crank Powered

x Working SMOKE DETECTORS, FIRE EXTINGUISHER, CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTOR

• Secure a container that has items you would want to evacuate with (a supply of medications you take, cash, etc.…)

• Access to a 72 hour kit• A plan for what actions your family would take if you were

separated ( way to reach each other or meeting place)
