Odds & EndsLearning Together! The following excerpt is from Yardsticks: Children in the Classroom Ages 4-14 , by Chip Wood. Younger (8 year old) fourth grade patterns and behaviors• Strong interest in talking about ideas and using academic vocabulary• Like to work in groups in the classroom• Do not always finish assignments without extra time or prompting because of sociability• Can master math facts such as addition, subtraction and some multiplication• Enjoy being responsible• Have trouble remembering homework• On-age (9 year old) fourth grade patterns and behavior• Often impatient with self, work performance, peers, teachers, parents• Can be anxious, worried about friendship issues, world or family events• Nightmares may re-emerge• Fairness and justice is important • Most often used word: “boring”; either in a hurry or dawdling• Physical aches and pains; frequent visits to nurse for some• Slightly older (9 year old) fourth grade patterns and behavior• Able to copy from the board and produce beautiful final drafts• Like to push physical limits, challenge themselves, enjoy trying to beat the clock• Often ask the teacher, “Why do we have to do this?”• Look hard for explanation of facts, why things happen• Very self-critical; sarcastic humor from adults can be very harmful. Nine is an age of dawning awareness for children as they think more abstractly about big issues like war, starvation, crime, justice, friendship, love. While they grapple with these struggles they proudly master control over basic skills.
Book Borrowing: We visit our school library once every six days. Students may borrow two books and renew as needed.
Students may borrow a book from our classroom library (M-TH). These books must return to school every day along with homework. I appreciate your help with this endeavor.
Birthdays: You are welcome to send in something for a birthday treat. Please email, evite or mail birthday invitations rather than sending invites to school.
Volunteers: We will have a few celebrations during the year and we like to keep things fairly healthy ie. carrots, dip, cheese & crackers, orange slices, etc. If you are willing to help with this please sign up or email me
Conference Times: There are fall and spring conferences. We are available to meet at other times as well. Please contact us if necessary.
Sign up and write your conference time here:
November Conference:

Computer: We will visit our computer lab often to type prewritten and to compose new pieces directly on the computer. There are wonderful keyboarding, skill building games online for students. Check out the Lenape Library website and my website for ideas.
Homework: Although students are growing in independence they still need assistance with homework. If you are spending a lot of time helping your child, please let me know by writing a note on the HW. Homework should be a short challenge or a review. Students are expected to correct errors on HW when it is returned. Students need to bring their reading books and logs back to class each day. Your support with organization is greatly appreciated.
Snack: Students burn calories as they work. We have snack everyday. Supporting children with healthy mini meals for snack is a great way to increase stamina for learning. (cheese, crackers, yogurt, half a sandwich, fruit, veggies) Thank you.
Field Trips: October / Mohonk. We will need chaperones. Other field trips are in the process of being planned. I will keep you posted.
