identify the books and materials included.

2. Follow the steps listed below when engaging in an activity with your

child:

a. Choose one activity to complete at a time (you do not need to do the

activities in any particular order).

b. Gather the book and necessary materials for completing the activity.

c. Allow your child to “play” with the items in the bag for a few moments

before expecting him/her to use the materials in a learning activity.

d. Read and talk about the chosen book with your child.

f. Engage in the chosen learning activity together.

g. Make note of yours and your child's reactions to the activity on your

at-home survey.

Directions: Ask your child the following questions before, during, and after reading the storyThe Farm Concert. Use the animal pencil as a pointer to direct your child’s attention to the items inthe question. Allow your child to look back through the book to help him/her find the answer ifneeded.

Before Reading

1. Say, “The title of the story is The Farm Concert. By looking at the picture on the cover andhearing the title, what do you think this story will be about?”

2. Ask, “What is a concert?”

3. Say, “On the title page, the farmer is covering his ears. Why do you think he is coveringhis ears?”

During Reading

4. Show your child the first page of the story and ask, “Where should I begin reading?”

5. Read, “‘Wuff, wuff,’ went the (dog).” (Allow your child to fill in the blank.)

6. Ask, “Why is the farmer yelling at the animals?”

7. Ask, “What did the animals do in the end of the story?”

After Reading

8. Ask, “How did the farmer feel at the end of the story?”

9. Ask, “What do we call it when we say something very quietly in a soft voice?” (Possibleanswer: We call it a whisper.)

10. Ask, “Which of the story animals have you ever seen in other books?”

Directions:

1. After reading The Farm Concertwith your child, talk with him/her about the noises made by

the animals throughout the story.

2. Ask your child, “How do you think the farmer felt when the animals were noisy in thebeginning of the story?”

3. Ask your child, “How do you think the farmer felt when the animals were quiet in the end ofthe story?”

4. Say, “Can you tell me about a time when you were trying to sleep and someone was loudand disturbing?”

5. Encourage your child to give details about the event by asking probing questions. (Possiblequestions include: Who was it? What were they saying? What did you say to them?)

6. Give your child positive feedback if he/she uses complete sentences in the story.

7. If your child does not use complete sentences, ask him/her to repeat the comment using acomplete sentence.

8. Model a complete sentence for your child if he/she needs assistance. For example, “One timeI was trying to sleep but my sister started listening to the radio very loudly and I could notgo to sleep.”

Directions:

1. After reading The Farm Concert with your child, discuss with him/her the sequence ofanimals in the story and the language used by each animal.

2. Ask your child to describe the noise level used by the animals in the beginning of thestory and then in the end of the story.

3. Show your child the picture/word cards (cow, sheep, pig, dog, duck, frog) one at a time.

4. Ask your child to name each animal as well as make the animal sound.

5. Invite your child to use the picture/word cards as props for retelling the story in correctsequence.

6. Model for your child how to use the picture/word cards as props for retelling by showingthe cow and saying, “‘Moo, Moo’ went the cow.”

7. Since there is no picture/word card for the farmer, tell your child he/she can be the farmerin the retelling.

8. After your child has retold the story, place the picture/word cards word-side up on thefloor or table in front of your child.

9. Call out one animal name at a time and challenge your child to find the appropriate wordcard. Provide assistance as needed.

Directions:

1. After reading the story The Farm Concert with your child, display the cover of the book foryour child to see.

2. Talk with your child about the title of the story including the word concert.

3. Ask your child, “What do you think the word concertmeans?”

4. Tell your child that the word concertmeans a musical performance put on for anaudience.

5. Talk with your child about the “concert” the animals performed for the farmer.

6. Invite your child to put on a concert using the alphabet song.

7. Give your child the alphabet poster and the animal pencil.

8. Play the alphabet sound song CD for your child.

9. Invite your child to sing the song as he/she points to the letters and pictures on thealphabet poster.

10. Tell your child he/she is putting on an “Alphabet Concert” as he/she sings the song.

Beginning Sound Recognition

Activity Title: Same Sounds

Standard: Your child will identify when twowords begin with the same sound.

Directions:

1. After reading The Farm Concert with your child, give him/her the six farm animal stickersand the index cards.

2. Say to your child, “Show me one of the stickers and tell me the animal’s name.”

3. Ask, “Was this animal in the story The Farm Concert?” (Provide assistance as needed.)

4. If the animal was in the story ask, “What sound did it make in the story?”

5. Say, “Go ahead and put the sticker on an index card.” (Repeat steps 2–5 until all stickers areon an index card.)

6. Choose two animal cards at a time and place them on the floor or table in front of yourchild sticker side up. Give your child the animal pencil.

7. Call out a word from the list below (that matches one of the two chosen animals).

8. Ask your child to use the animal pencil and point to the animal that has the samebeginning sound as the spoken word. (For example, if cow and pig are displayed and youcall out, “cake” your child would point to the cow.)

9. Talk about the beginning sound of the two words. (For example, “Cake and cow both beginwith the /c/ sound.”)

10. Repeat the process using other animal stickers and other words listed below.

2. Teach your child the chant below.

Directions:

1. After reading the story A Mother for Choco with your child, talk with him/her about thedifferent animals included in the story.

2. Show your child the walrus, giraffe, hippopotamus, and alligator pictures and words that arein the laminated sheets.

3. As you cut out each picture, ask your child to identify the animal.

4. Then challenge your child to match each animal picture to its matching name as it is cutout. Attach Velcro to the pictures and words.

5. Show your child the Choco’s Journey book. Read through the book, pointing out to yourchild the missing words and pictures.

6. Together with your child, choose which animal belongs on each page.

7. Use the Velcro to attach each picture and animal name to the book.

8. After the book is completed, invite your child to read it to you. Point out to your child thathe/she is reading the words using a graphic and the word.

9. Allow your child to engage in an interactive reading of the story by attaching theappropriate pictures and words while reading.

Activity Title: Looking for Letters

Standard: Your child will recognize letters ofthe alphabet and match upper- and lowercaseletters.

Directions:

1. After reading the story A Mother for Choco, talk with your child about how Choco waslooking for a mother.

2. Give your child the animal puppet.

3. Tell your child that the animal puppet needs his/her help looking for letters.

4. Gather the magnetic letters and choose five letters that your child needs to practice. (If yourchild recognizes all letters of the alphabet, do this activity for letter sounds.)

5. Place the upper- and lowercase letters (using the chosen five) on the floor or table in frontof your child.

6. Say the chant below inserting a letter name (or sound).

Looking for LettersLooking for letters, one, two, three.

Find the letter ___ for me. (Find the sound ___ for me.)

7. Ask your child to help the puppet find the chosen letter (or sound).

8. After both the upper- and lowercase letters have been found, talk with your child about thedifferences and similarities between them.

9. Repeat steps 6-8 for the other four letters.

10. Praise your child for his/her ability to recognize letters (or sounds).
