What is Daily 5?

▪ The Daily 5™ is a framework for structuring literacy time so students develop lifelong habits of reading, writing, and working independently.

Page 3: Ell's Get Live with Daily 5 NCACE 2014

Why in ESL?

▪ Daily 5 works well for students at the beginning stages of learning another language; the Daily 5 requires a lot of language processing for following procedures and practicing behaviors modeled by the teacher. It helps develop the language of speaking, listening, reading, and writing.

The Process

▪ Students are given 15 Minutes at each station

▪ Students must complete a check for understanding card.

▪ Because the class size is small, the teacher is able to review the students work. If the work is incomplete the student can remain in the station until the work is complete. The language development process is not rushed.

Listening to Reading

▪ Listening to good models of reading helps students to improve their own reading and it provides the audio support for reading that some children may be lacking.

▪ When we hear examples of good reading and fluent reading, we learn more words, expand our vocabulary and become better readers.

▪ Supports the ELL missing those critical daily read alouds at home.

Read to Self

▪ In order to become better readers, students must have opportunities to read. Strategies are taught to students that help them choose "just right" books to enjoy reading by themselves.

I- Choose a book online P- Purpose Why do I want to read it? I- Interest Does it interest me? C- Comprehend Am I understanding what I am reading? K- Know Do I know most of the words?

▪ Students are able to practice reading each day, with books they choose.

Work on Words

▪ Practicing spelling helps students become better spellers and writers and, also, better readers.

▪ Correct spelling speeds up the reading and writing process, thus improving writing the ability to get things down on paper.

▪ Introduce vocabulary words so that the students can understand what they are reading and become better writers.

Work on Writing

▪ Allow students to choose their own topic. Just like reading, the best way to become a better writer is to practice writing each day.

▪ Students need time to write about things that really matter to them. This could be something that a student began to write during a writing workshop time. This gives students an independent time to develop their ideas.

Work with Teacher

▪ This station supports North Carolina State Objectives to help meet AMAO3 target. Teacher helps to develop those 44 critical words students must master in order to pass the state test.

▪ Structured reading should take place... Reading Aloud to students and writing, Guided Reading and writing, Shared Reading and writing, and Mentor Text...Connecting Reading and Writing using the 6 Traits.
