No person shall be tried twice for the same offense; double jeopardy

Not be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against themselves

Neither shall a person be deprived of life, liberty, property, with out due process of law

Current Event: “DA offers limited immunity to Bell city clerk in public

corruption case”

City Clerk Rebecca Valdez of Los Angeles’ testimony could not be used against her by the Los Angeles Country district attorney.

She was not charged in a corruption sweep that resulted in the arrest of eight current and former Bell city officials

Prosecutors said that the immunity did not mean she was charged.

Only council member not arrested, and only witness to testify.

Connection

“Prosecutors said they believed she might invoke her 5th Amendment right not to testify if not offered limited immunity.”

She will not be held against her will to testify as a witness again for the trial because of her immunity.

5th amendment states she has the right to not testify again to the case, plus she has immunity.
