Snow White

According to Disney :

Upset by her step-

daughter’s beauty, a wicked

stepmother orders a huntsman

to take her young daughter out

into the woods and kill her,

bringing back her heart. The

huntsman can’t do it, and lets

Snow White escape into the

forest. She finds a tiny house

where singing dwarves, all

named for their defining

characteristics, live. They decide

to let her stay, to keep house for

them.

The wicked queen finds

out, via her magic mirror, that

Snow White isn’t dead, and sets

out to kill her with a poisoned

apple. Though the dwarves get

revenge by driving the queen

off the edge of a cliff, they can’t

wake Snow White…until a

passing prince comes and

awakens her with true love’s kiss.

And then they live happily ever

after.

But Originally :

In the first edition of the

story, it wasn’t a wicked step-

mother at all. It was Snow

White’s mother. And she didn’t

just want Snow White’s heart-she

wanted her lungs and liver, too.

When She discovers that the

huntsman hasn’t killed the girl,

she sets out to try to kill her in

three different ways : with and

overly tight corset, with a

poisoned comb, and finally with

a poisoned apple.

It’s not true love’s kiss that

revives Snow White, it’s a good

shake, as the prince attempts to

make off with Snow White’s glass

coffin- and the guess doesn’t

get pushed off the cliff, she’s

forced to dance herself to

death in a pair of red-hot iron

shoes. Ouch.

Rapunzel

According to Disney :

Disney’s adaptation of

Rapunzel, Tangled, is very

recent, and not very traditional.

Rapunzel gets a lot more

confidence than most other

Disney princesses, and her

prince isn’t prince at all. But the

elements of the original

Rapunzel story are there : a

beautiful princess is kept captive

by a witch, who uses the girl’s

long hair to climb in and out of a

tower prison, and it’s only when

she meets a man that she gets

to escape.

But Originally :

According to the Grimms,

the reason the wicked witch

gets to take baby Rapunzel

away is that her dad stole herbs

from the witch's garden to meet

his wife’s cravings, and when he

got caught, he agreed to hand

over his first-born. Rapunzel gets

struck in the tower, letting down

her hair for the witch, but when

a passing prince hears her

singing, he decides to pay

Rapunzel a visit himself. He visits

her, secretly, several times, and

the witch only finds out because

Rapunzel gets pregnant, and

innocently asks why her belly’s

getting so big.

In a rage, the witch cuts off the

girl’s hair, uses it to lure the

prince back into tower, then

chucks him off the top, letting

him fall into a thorn bush that

plucks out his eyes. Eventually,

though, there is a happy ending

where the couple gets back

together, and Rapunzel’s tear

heal the prince’s eyes.

A. Read and discuss with your friends about each character.

Minotaur

The ancient Greeks often used

monsters in their stories to warm of

dangers that lurked beyond their

homes. One such monster was the

Minotaur, a half-man, half-bull

creature that was imprisoned in

the labyrinth under the palace of

King Minos on the island of Crete.

The Minotaur ate human flesh.

Every nine years, fourteen young

people were sent into the

labyrinth to be sacrificed to the

Minotaur. The labyrinth was dark

and confusing and had many

dead ends. No one who entered

ever returned until Theseus, the

brave prince of Athens, was able

to kill the Minotaur and escape

from the labyrinth.

Medusa

Medusa was originally a mortal

Gorgon with beautiful hair.

However, she was boastful and

bragged that her hair was more

beautiful than that of the goddess

Athena. Athena punished Medusa

by changing her hair into

horrifying, snake-hair creature that

would turn anyone who looked at

her stone. Medusa’s punishment,

like that of many other morals in

Greek mythology, resulted from

her disrespect to the gods.

Page 24: Eliciting an Idea - SYSP

The sphinx

The sphinx was a creature with the

head, shoulders and chest of a

woman. She had the body and claws

of a lion, and the wings of a huge

bird. The sphinx strangled anyone

who could not answer her riddle. This

monster perched on the cliffs above

the road to Thebes until a prince

answer her riddle , then she killed

herself.

The Chimaera

The Chimaera was a terrifying

creature that was half lion and half

mountain goat with a snake’s tail. It

breathed fire, and its skin was so

tough that it could not be pierced.

The hero Bellerophon of Corinth Killed

this creature.

The Hydra

The Hydra proved to be one of

Hercules’s greatest challenges. This

multi-headed reptile could regrow

two heads as fast as one could be

cut off. With its fangs, poisonous

tongue and sharp claws, the Hydra

was finally killed when Hercules cut

off the first eight heads, sealed each

cut, and cut off and buried the ninth

immortal head.

Now it is your turn. Use a story map to help plan your story before you

begin writing. Create a fairy tale of your own to make an audio book. Draw

and color a picture to match a story and make it into animation. Show you

how creative and professional you are!!!!

-Your story should be written in past tense

-It should include a description of a protagonist and an antagonist

-You should describe your setting (when, where)

-Then you should talk about what your characters do, what kind of

problem do they have

-Finally, you should talk about how your characters fix the problem

-You can start a story with the following phrases:

Once upon a time…

Many years ago…

In the distant future…

There once lived…
