Pastor’s Notes

Archbishop Lori will be making a “pastoral visit” to CCGB on the weekend of June 25 & 26. The visit will begin with him celebrating a regularly scheduled Mass at each parish and then having a meet-and-greet in the hall. He will begin the visit at Good Shepherd parish on Saturday, June 25 at our 5:30 p.m. Mass. On Sunday he will celebrate our 8:30 a.m. Mass at Holy Trinity parish and then our 11:00 a.m. Mass at Crucifixion parish. I encourage you to arrange your schedules accordingly. Continuing with the Holy Father’s post-synodal Apostolic Exhortation Amoris Laetitia (The Joy of Love) we look at Chapter Eight: “Guiding, discerning and integrating weakness” (291-312). The 8th chapter is an invitation to mercy and pastoral discernment in situations that do not fully match what the Lord proposes. The Pope uses three very important verbs: guiding, discerning, and integrating, which are fundamental in addressing fragile, complex, or irregular situations. The chapter has sections on the need for gradualness in pastoral care; the importance of dis- cernment; norms and mitigating circumstances in pastoral discernment; and finally what the Pope calls the “logic of pastoral mercy.” Chapter 8 is very sensitive. In reading it one must remember that “the Church’s task is often like that of a field hospital” (AL 291). Here the Holy Father grapples with the findings of the Synods on controversial issues. He reaffirms what Christian marriage is and adds that “some forms of union radically contradict this ideal, while others realize it in at least a partial and analogous way.” The Church therefore “does not disregard the constructive elements in those situations which do not yet or no longer correspond to her teaching on marriage” (AL 292).. As far as discernment with regard to “irregular” situations is concerned, the Pope states: “There is a need ‘to avoid judgments which do not take into account the complexity of various situations’ and ‘to be attentive, by necessity, to how people experience distress because of their condition”’ (AL 296). And he continues: “It is a matter of reaching out to everyone, of needing to help each person find his or her proper way of participating in the ecclesial community, and this to experience being touched by an ‘unmerited, unconditional, and gratuitous’ mercy” (AL 297). And further: “The divorced who have entered a new union, for example, can find themselves in a variety of situations, which should not be pigeonholed or fit into overly rigid classifications leaving no room for a suitable personal and pastoral

discernment” (AL 298). In this line, gathering the observations of many Synod Fathers, the Pope states that “the baptized who are divorced and civilly remarried need to be more fully integrated into Christian communities in the variety of ways possible, while avoiding any occasion of scandal.” “Their participation can be expressed in different ecclesial services … Such persons need to feel not as excommunicated members of the Church, but instead as living members, able to live and grow in the Church … This integration is also needed in the care and Christian upbringing of their children” (AL 299). Next week because of the length of this chapter I will continue on with chapter 8, paragraph 300. If you would like to be anointed before entering the hospital or for any other reason, ask the priest before or after Mass and he will be glad to offer you the sacrament. If you would like the community gathered to pray for you, I would be happy to anoint you after communion. My contact info: Email address: [email protected] and my cell number is 410-299-6731. Remember God loves you and so do I. Make it a good week! Fr. Lou

We will have a Retreat to Honor our Blessed Mother’s birthday on September 17 at St. Anthony’s Shrine in Ellicott City. More info regarding the Retreat will follow. St. Vincent de Paul Help Fund our new Food Pantry!

Did you know a Food Pantry is currently being established at our Parish Center? In response to community need, the pantry will be operated for the benefit of our less fortunate neighbors in the Glen Burnie area. The pantry will be managed by our parish’s own SVdP conference. Jacob Nicodemi, one of our youth ministry boy scouts, has volunteered to complete the setup of this pantry as his Boy Scout Eagle Scout Project. The project consists of renovating the room and purchasing and setting up shelving units and tables to hold non-perishable food items. We are asking our parish community for monetary donations to help purchase the needed shelving supplies. Donations will be collected after all Masses THIS WEEKEND - June 11 & 12. Checks should be made payable to St. Vincent de Paul of Glen Burnie. In addition, you may visit Jacob’s Go Fund Me account and make a donation through the website: https://www.gofundme.com/22mxr832. Thank you in advance for your generous support of this wonderful service project!

Volunteers Needed at Holy Trinity Church Summer is here and perhaps your teens are looking for something to do. We are in desperate need of volunteers to assist in cleaning Holy Trinity Church on Mondays and /or Fridays after morning Mass. If you have just one hour a month to help, please consider volunteering at Holy Trinity. The entire process lasts for about 90 minutes. All are encouraged to help. Contact Ceil Miller at 410-761-7598.

Haiti Outreach Committee Even the teenage boys at St. Laurent ask to have their picture taken. Please pray for these faithful young men, Jackie, Ovenche, and Joseph, all of whom are dedicated altar servers. Visits to our sister parish each summer are open to all parishioners. For those who are interested in traveling to Haiti in July 2016, the cost is around $1,000.00 which includes airfare, room & board, and travel medications. Spending time at our sister parish is a life changing experience, an opportunity to experience a different culture, to know firsthand the love and joy of our sisters and brothers and to receive tremendous blessings. Please prayerfully consider a trip in 2016. For more information please email Gail Grady at [email protected].

Boy Scout Troop 887 Do you know a boy in 6th grade who could benefit from the Boy Scout program? We meet every Monday evening at 7 p.m. at Crucifixion Church. Contact Mr. Tony or Mr. Bill at [email protected].

First Friday Adoration at Holy Trinity Eucharistic Adoration is held on the 1st Friday of each month at Holy Trinity Church. Come pray for all Vocations found within our Church – Sacramental Married Life, Holy Single Life, Priesthood, or Religious Life. This is a wonderful opportunity to pray our path as well as for those we hold dear. Our Lord cannot be left alone! The Eucharist is the heart of the Church, our nourishment. It is central to this devotion that one or more Eucharistic adorers be present until the Blessed Sacrament has reposed at 6:30 p.m. Enjoy your time with Jesus, ever present in the Eucharist, while you show your appreciation and love for Him. Prayer sheets are available or bring your own. Your commitment to signing up and following through on your commitment is critically important. Please take a moment to register your time on the sign-up sheet in the Church narthex. Jesus will be present – will you join him?

Wednesday Adoration at Crucifixion Wednesday Adoration Topic

We conclude our reflections and catechesis on the Mysteries of the Rosary with the Sorrowful mysteries. Archbishop Fulton Sheen famously remarked that “loneliness is the last acid ingredient to grief.” Jesus felt utterly lonely in his suffering prompting his pitiful cry from the cross, “I thirst!” He thirsts for your love, your devotion, your person. On June 1, we will explore how Jesus is reaching out and speaking to you from his passion. Please join us at the Church of the Crucifixion from 7:00-8:00 pm. “Love the Madonna and pray the rosary, for her rosary is the weapon against the evils of the world today.” St. Pio of Pietrelcina

Wednesday Adoration at Good Shepherd Adoration is held each Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Good Shepherd's Chapel of the Angels. The chapel is also open for daily prayer in the presence of the Lord Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Two of our newest saints provide us encouragement for this most beneficial devotion: “Jesus Himself is calling you to spend one special specific hour with Him each week.” (Pope St. John Paul II); “There is no doubt that a flood of graces will descend upon your family and the world if more souls would become docile pupils of adoration.” (Pope St. John XXIII). Call Mary at 410-207-5188 for information.
