“The Chemicals Northwest REACH group is an invaluable way for SMEs, such as John Hogg Technical Solutions, to keep abreast of the latest developments not only from ECHA, but also within the chemical’s industry. It gives us the guidance and reassurance we need, without having to rely on consultants who may be experts in REACH, but have little knowledge of our niche within the chemicals industry.” Mick Goodwin, John Hogg Technical Solutions Ltd.

If any members of Chemicals Northwest are involved in REACH and would like to join the group please contact [email protected]. Our next meeting is taking place on 30th November and will have a speaker from the REACH Compliance Team from the HSE giving a presentation and answering any questions the group may have.

nMEMBERS SPOTLIGHT

Twelve years ago, I was thrilled to be appointed as an advisory teacher at CIEC Promoting Science, University of York. Since then, through the Children Challenging Industry project, supported by Chemicals Northwest, I have engaged schools to work with the industrial community in as many ways as possible

I have negotiated with many representatives from the chemical industry, including members of the CIA, IChemE and RSC. In the last couple of years alone, ambassadors I have trained have interacted with over 1,000 children in their own schools, demonstrating real-life applications of science. I have worked with over 10,000 primary-aged pupils and 3,000 primary teachers, carrying out exciting, practical, enquiry-driven science lessons set within industrial contexts and organising visits for them to a local chemical company to see first-hand how classroom science links to the real world.

More than 70 chemical and allied companies across the North-West of England have been recruited in order to increase the children’s motivation for science and increase their awareness of its relevance to their daily lives, the products they use, and the industry around them. To ensure that these visits are effective, hundreds of industrial personnel have been trained, thus giving them the confidence and knowledge to

interact with young children about the work they do. I have also enabled 400 school governors and parents to extend their knowledge of the activities carried out with their children.

There have been so many memorable occasions throughout the years, such as welcoming Chinese and Norwegian visitors keen to see primary science in action or hosting annual celebrations for schools and industry; no two days have been the same. Gradually my role expanded. I found myself leading courses for teachers at the National Science Learning Centre, developing resources for teachers and industry, mentoring groups of primary schools hoping to achieve the prestigious Primary Science Quality Mark award, building links between primary schools, high schools and universities and training university ambassadors to support primary teachers in the classroom. I have enjoyed enthusing primary teachers to deliver practical investigations, hopefully to inspire young scientists to develop an interest in STEM subjects and a possible career in that field.

I am so very proud that my work and enthusiasm for bringing the excitement of science to young people has been recognised by the CIA in my recent award for Outstanding Contribution at the Chemical Industries Association Annual Awards Dinner on 21st June 2012.

Some time ago Chemicals North West received an approach from Brabners Stuart and Brabners Chaffe Street. The approach was to pull together a group of people under the Chairmanship of Phil Browitt (former Managing Director of Agility Logistics Solutions Limited) to put a proposal together to look at ways of improving the chemical’s supply chain arena.

As a result of this approach a Steering Group has emerged which includes:

Phil Browitt ChainologySteve Stuart Brabners StuartDenise Walker Brabners Chaffe StreetHelen Broom IneosJohn Roche Chemicals NorthwestStuart Ross Chairman Food North WestDong Li/Hossam Ismail University of LiverpoolPhilip Mills Royal Bank of ScotlandSimon Reid Peel PortsMatthew Miller Independent Director

The group have held preliminary discussions with Liverpool City Region LEP. They have received positive feedback that there could be ERDF or TSB support for a regional improvement project.

Other industries such as food, aerospace and advanced manufacturing have received support in the past.

The steering group have discussed holding a workshop, which will be the consolidation of issues into a discussion document that hopefully will form the basis for a project improvement bid.

In order for this document to be a wide ranging and effective as it can be all members of Chemicals Northwest are encouraged to attend and participate in the supply chain workshop – date tbc.

At minimum workshop attendees can:

n Learn what is new in the Chemical Supply Chain arena

n Input what you believe are the key supply chain issues you currently face

n Discover how other Industry Sectors have successfully improved efficiency for their members

n Influence North West Chemicals work groups to address the issues

n See case studies deriving business value through a sustainable approach

n Listen to a leading Bank explaining the current financial crisis and the role of private equity in the supply chain

The list of speakers is currently being put together and will be announced in the next few weeks.

If you are interested in supply chain issues then please put forward any views you may have by email to [email protected]

Ultimately, the workshop will be geared up to ensure the beneficiaries are the members of Chemicals Northwest.

Stepan is a major global manufacturer of specialty and intermediate chemicals used in a broad range of industries.

Although Stepan is classified with other specialty chemical companies, it is unique in the industry and does not have a competitor or competitors to precisely match its businesses because its products have a specific focus.

Surfactants

Stepan produces surfactants, which are the key ingredient in consumer and industrial cleaning compounds. Manufacturers of detergents, fabric softeners, hard surface cleaners, shampoos, lotions, toothpastes and cosmetics depend on surfactants to achieve the cleaning, foaming and emulsifying qualities required of their products.

The company also produces germicidal quaternary compounds. These cleaning products are used in consumer and industrial products that kill germs, mold and mildew. Hospitals and restaurants depend on these products for the safety and hygiene of their premises.

Industrial uses for surfactants are in foamers in gypsum wallboard, emulsifying and moisture repellence of paints and coatings, and emulsifiers to facilitate the spreading and application of agricultural products.

Polymers

The polymer product group includes phthalic anhydride, polyurethane polyols and polyurethane systems. Phthalic

anhydride is used in plasticizers, polyester and alkyd resins for applications in construction materials, automotive and marine applications as well as other consumer products. Polyurethane polyols are used in the manufacture of laminate board for the construction industry in addition to coatings, adhesives, sealants and elastomers formulations. Polyurethane systems provide reinforcement and thermal insulation and are sold to the construction, industrial, aerospace and appliance markets.

Specialty Products

Specialty Products manufactured by Stepan are in consumer applications such as natural flavors for the beverage industry. Other applications are the esters, fats and oils used as emulsifiers, solubilizers and alternate fats for the food and pharmaceutical industry.

Facilities

Stepan utilizes a network of modern production facilities in North and South America, Europe, China and the Philippines with 1,880 employees.

Spotlight on Evolving Sites and Capabilities Approach

Evolving Times

The modern day site has changed dramatically as the chemical sector has evolved itself. In the current economic climate, site owners/operators could look for cost and scale benefits by sourcing integrated services from their suppliers. The need for a more integrated approach is being adopted by suppliers as they look to stay ahead of the curve and provide a service that truly meets their clients’ needs, expectations and budget.

Size Does Matter

G4S is the largest security solutions company in the UK and Ireland, with over 40,000 employees managed from over 80 offices across the United Kingdom. They are renowned for pulling resources from their national and international operations. Benefits range from the deployment of skilled, trained and motivated personnel to taking advantage of G4S’ experience in the chemical industry. The G4S name offers clients financial stability, and the peace of mind that G4S will be there to deliver the service in the current economic climate.

G4S recruits their personnel locally and the service is delivered from regional and local offices; supported by named and experienced contract managers offering day to day support and guidance through all legislative needs.

Training is the Key to Success

G4S works closely with manufacturers to ensure their people use the most up to date and effective equipment. This allows them to offer the best service to their customers. This paired with unrivalled and specialist training packages for G4S’ front line staff allows them to deliver a unique and tailored service based on their client’s specific site(s) requirement.

Safety and Security Officer (SASO)

This has led to the development of the Safety and Security officer. With COMAH regulations to consider, security matters for sites to handle and environmental issues to deal with on a daily basis, the G4S Safety and Security Officer (SASO) approach is one that has been invaluable to security operations in chemical environments. It is clear that on the majority of chemical sites, security operations are so much more than a security officer sitting in a gatehouse controlling access and egress. The security provision is very much part of the site operation, they are involved in incident control planning & management, are often the first point of contact to deal with specific chemical incidents (administering first aid and response) and instrumental in emergency planning and evoking of related procedures.

Technology Matters

Recognising the importance of selecting the correct equipment for the situation and for those who will use it, G4S uses the latest technology alongside teams of trained employees. The technology and training provided for their officers enables them to deliver the highest possible security to the chemical sector.

On chemical sites, G4S personnel prevent breaches of security on a daily basis that would otherwise result in disruption to operations and substantial costs incurred to site owners. The equipment used during these operations, such as thermal imaging cameras and optical devices, is vital in tracking and capturing would-be intruders. However, these items are redundant without the expertly trained security officers which use them.

There is a large portfolio of UK-wide services that encompass:

nSafety and Security Officer (SASO)nManned Security ServicesnAlcohol & Drug ScreeningnFirst Attack Fire Response OfficersnSecure Transport & Logistical OfficersnCanine ServicesnRisk Management & ConsultancynGurkha Services (Enhanced Security Surge Capability)nSecure Facilities ManagementnSecurity Systems & TechnologynEvent Security

With the comfort and knowledge that every aspect of site security and logistical matters can be taken care of by a single supplier, it no doubt goes a long way in offering site managers peace of mind and allows them to focus on their duties.

UKTI Northwest have confirmed their programme of overseas trade missions up to March 2013.

Understanding the market and culture of the countries to which you are selling is key to successful exporting. Participation in UKTI’s overseas trade delegations could help your company successfully pursue business opportunities.

Each year, UKTI Northwest coordinates a number of trade missions to various countries. UKTI also works nationally, in partnership with many organisations, to add value to trade delegations. The missions include visits to international exhibitions, as well as fact finding and sector specific visits.

UK companies of all sizes can take part, however, as many of these trips offer subsidies for eligible small to medium-sized companies, the cost of exploring new markets is minimised, making a trade mission a highly cost-effective way for fact finding and contacting prospective customers.

UKTI Northwest can assist you before, during and after a market visit by arranging:

n pre-visit briefings and one-to-one mentoring with the UKTI trade officers overseas

n appointment making with selected contacts or business partners

n support at meetings to help with translation, business etiquette and culture

n bespoke receptions, meetings and seminars where you can present your products or services

For further information about the featured trade missions or to discuss your specific country focus, please contact Tricia Francis, International Trade Associate - Chemicals, UKTI Northwest, on 07966 560644 or [email protected]

nSUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Implementation of an Environmental, Health and Safety or Integrated Management system, especially if certified to ISO 14001 or OHSAS 18001, requires the identification of legal requirements and the evaluation of compliance. Typically this is addressed by developing and maintaining a legal register with processes to evaluate compliance.

The requirements of these standards have evolved since the first versions and the expectations for the identification of legal requirements have matured. In the past, it had been acceptable to merely list the relevant legislation that applied nationally and locally. Subsequently, it became the norm to provide a summary of legislation. Now, best practice is to interpret the legislative implications and explain what an operator is actually expected to do in order to maintain compliance.

Full and summary legislation is now largely available electronically through the internet but it can be difficult to interpret and tailor such legislation to suit the activities of the operator. The registers also have to include details of “other requirements” as specified by the international standards. These can include corporate policies and/or standards, sector-based initiatives, investor/lender EHS specifications and client requirements.

Developing and maintaining a well-explained comprehensive register of environmental health and safety legislation can be

time-consuming and requires experience of the implications of complying. CRA has an extensive knowledge of EHS legislation in many global jurisdictions and for a range of sectors. This has been achieved through supporting clients with the development, implementation and maintenance of EHS management systems and reviewing their legal compliance.

Currently CRA is supporting clients with corporate projects in various locations across Europe, Asia, North & South America and Africa, with the aim to secure and maintain certification to ISO and OSHAS standards. One project alone required development of EHS legal registers for activities in over 70 countries world-wide.

n SKILLS

16 ELEMENTS AUTUMN 2012

Competence has always been essential to safe operation in the process industries and the benefits of investing in a competent workforce, such as increased productivity and improved resource efficiency, are generally well understood. Many employers in the industry have incorporated competence into their strategy and are committed to it in the long term.

We are currently facing new challenges to develop and maintain high levels of competence from external sources, such as, the demographic ‘grey wave’ that is beginning to bite across the sector. Employers are having to recruit new employees to replace those retiring and need systems to retain their current high levels of competence.

The Competent Authority’s introduction of a Competency Management System inspection regime in April 2012 has added another dimension for sites falling under the COMAH regulations. In fact, the HSE’s Inspection of Competence Management Systems at COMAH Establishments Guideline is an excellent model for competence development within any company and enables employers to embrace both performance improvement and compliance in an effective and robust way. Yet, worryingly, a recent straw poll across a group of SHE Managers from the chemicals sector suggested less than 20% had actually reviewed the guidance and only 10% felt they would pass muster.

Developing and maintaining competent employees requires an understanding as to what competence is within each job

role, and commitment of resource and investment in training and systems that allows you to monitor and track employee competence.

The Academy’s effective competence assurance system has been mapped against the HSE’s Competency Guidelines and Human Factors Guidelines. Used in conjunction with the Gold Standard Framework and the Cogent Competency Management System Guidelines, it enables employers to ensure their employees have the necessary level of competence to drive up business performance in a safe and compliant manner. Larger organisations may have these processes in place, but is it always useful to benchmark internal systems against an external standard.

The industry must accept that competence is vital, it requires a long term approach and done properly, it is an investment not a burden. Each business may approach it differently, but it is worth knowing there is help and guidance out there readily available to all.

Competence – a long term commitment not a quick fix

This year saw the second competition sponsored by Ineos Chlor and The Chemcial Industries Association, it was an Olympics inspired competition.

The competition was on two levels allowing for all ages to enter. There was a wide range of entrants from schools across the UK, all competing for a cash prize and also a guided tour through the Houses of Parliament as part of the prize giving. The judges stated that all entrants were of an extremely high caliber.

The winners are listed below:

Primary / Middle School Picture Competition (Draw a picture of your idea):

3rd place: Jacob Evans-Reid , Thingwall Primary, Wirral

Jacob drew a picture to illustrate how the Paralympics could change with science by introducing Solar panels to charge electrics of amputees legs to assist with running

2nd place: Aimee Musgrave, Whinfield Primary, Darlington

Aimee submitted a picture idea for steam proof goggles. The sensors work to keep the goggles clear by evaporating the steam weather you are swimming or cycling.

1st Place: Storm Henry, Whinfield Primary, Darlington

Storm submitted a collage of ideas to show how science contributes to sport. One example was the ‘Jump-A-Thon, a new invention of trainers that propel you at your command, with smart technology to enhance athletes to compete in games.

Secondary School Writing Competition (Tell us in 750 words what you think future sport will be like, or invent new rules for existing sports):

3rd Place: Rhys Ashwell, St Katherines, Somerset

Rhys wrote about a chip technology in football boots that will record all the statistics of the players game i.e. Speed, calories burnt which also allows the manger to match key match decisions.

2nd place: Faryal Amir, St. Lawrence Academy, Doncaster

Faryal wrote a witty rendition on how humans are becoming increasing lazy as technology allows us to relax from doing physical work. Suggesting robots could be in place to take part in sport through genetics rather than training and artificial means.

1st place: Ellie Beard, St Katherines, Somerset

Wrote a detailed essay on a number of ideas, i.e. Virtual sports and people with disabilities – with the rise of medical knowledge professionals can produce artificial limbs which are adaptable for individual uses. Made of carbon fibre and plastic the limb will be stronger and resemble as much as possible to a human leg.

The awards were presented in July by Esther McVey, in front of the winner’s friends and CIA members. Richard Davies, last Year’s Young Ambassador also attended to help inspire the students to a career in the Chemical Industry.

What will sport look like in 2050?

Redx Pharma has announced plans for a new £10.8m venture focused on developing drugs to combat resistance to antibiotics and new medicines to tackle viral infections.

The company has bid for £4.7m from the Government’s Regional Growth Fund to support the establishment of the new subsidiary, Redx Anti-Infectives, which is likely to be based in Liverpool alongside the company’s existing operations. The outcome of the RGF bid will be known later this year.

The new research centre will be used to develop a range of anti-infective drugs, tackling hard-to-treat infections, including the growing threat of drug resistant superbugs like MRSA, as well as conditions such as influenza, Hepatitis C and HIV.

The RGF funding is to support an initial two-year industrial research phase of chemistry, biochemistry and analytical testing, which would create 119 new high-value science jobs in Liverpool.

Overall, the total cost of the project would be £32.7m over five years. The initial research scheme will run for two years after which it will unlock further investment of £22m for years three to five.

Dr Neil Murray, chief executive of Redx Pharma, commented:

“Our bid is a key element of Liverpool’s Life Science strategy and a tangible means of delivering sustainable economic growth. It is also strongly supported by the Liverpool Local Enterprise Partnership; the Mayor of Liverpool, Joe Anderson; Liverpool City Council, Liverpool Vision, University of Liverpool and the Royal Liverpool & Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust. We thank them for the support and interest we’ve received already and are excited about the potential to further grow our business.”

Redx Anti-Infectives would join the other two parts of the business in becoming the cornerstone tenant for the development of Liverpool’s new biomedical campus development, a £28m project planned to go ahead on land owned by the Royal Liverpool Hospital. The creation of a biomedical centre was one of the recommendations made by Lord Heseltine and Sir Terry Leahy in their 2011 report on growth in the Liverpool City Region.

nINNOVATION

Sci-Tech Daresbury (formerly Daresbury Science and Innovation Campus) is one of two national science and innovation campuses. It is a key location identified by government to drive the high-tech economy in the UK in part through investment in major scientific facilities and collaborative centres.

Sci-Tech Daresbury is home to the Science and Technology Facilities Council’s Daresbury Laboratory which provides access to large-scale science facilities (eg super computers, accelerator science facilities) for universities and industry. It is also home to over 100 high-tech companies in areas such as advanced engineering, biomedical technologies, digital/ICT, and energy and environmental technologies.

On August 17th 2011, the Prime Minister, David Cameron, visited Sci-Tech Daresbury to announce to an expectant audience of Daresbury scientists and entrepreneurs that it had been selected as an enterprise zone, one of a selected few in England.

Announcing Enterprise Zone status, Prime Minister David Cameron said: “You have got a brilliant collaboration here of government-sponsored science, university-sponsored science, defence-industry science, health science, but also a thriving private sector. Here is a successful model, here is great collaboration between scientists and businesses, here is something to build on and an Enterprise Zone can make Daresbury even more successful in the future than it has been today.”

Enterprise Zone status brings the following benefits to Sci-Tech Daresbury:

n Business rates retained over a 25 year period and reinvested to provide new critical support infrastructure

n Companies locating into the Enterprise Zone are eligible for 5 years business rates relief

n Utilisation of radically simplified planning approaches for the Enterprise Zone

Sci-Tech Daresbury’s new property, Vanguard House, is already filling up rapidly with companies enjoying the benefits from being in the Enterprise Zone. If any other companies want to understand more about Sci-Tech Daresbury and its Enterprise Zone status, then please contact John Leake on [email protected] or on 01925 607000.

Microbes are all around us, sometimes causing us problems and sometimes being harnessed for our benefit.

Those involved in the Personal Care industry know this more than most, for example cosmetic formulations have to be protected against attack from bacteria and fungi, but microbes can also provide a source of novel and sustainable raw materials. These themes were explored by over fifty attendees to “Microbes Good and Bad in Personal Care”, a one-day event held on 19th June and hosted by Intelligent Formulation’s Personal Care Programme in association with Chemicals Northwest.

As always with the Personal Care Programme, the event was designed to combine science and business, and to connect large and small organisations together. Attendees were able to listen to keynote contributions from major players in the sector (Reckitt Benckiser, Croda and Lonza) interspersed with up to the minute technical knowledge (from Teknoscienze,

Klarus Consulting and Intelligent Formulation) as well as short and snappy “One Slide” pitches from smaller companies and technology providers. The event provided extensive opportunities for business networking between all delegates and exhibitors such as Inolex, Intertek and Zinsser were able to benefit from new contacts made at the event.

Future events in the Personal Care Programme are likely to include a Business Exchange with the Cosmetic Valley and Pharma Valley clusters in France as well as a technical and networking event on the theme of sensory perception in personal care. Further information on these activities can be obtained by e-mailing [email protected] and an overview of the recent event is available on www.intelligentformulation.org/events/archive/microbes_good_and_bad
