2nd, 3rd 4th and 5th Grades Your child should spend up to 60 minutes over the course of each day on this packet.

Consider other family-friendly activities during the day such as:

Turn out the lights and

read a story by flashlight. Play a game outside.  Help write out a

grocery list.  Practice counting coins with someone in your

family.

Mindful Minute: Go outside. What are

How many spoons long is your hallway? Estimate first

and then measure.

Build a fort with couch cushions.

Practice your math facts while doing jumping jacks.

*All activities are optional. Parents/Guardians please practice responsibility, safety, and supervision.

Winter is the coldest time of the year.

That is true everywhere.

It does not matter where you happen to live.

In winter, there are fewer hours of sunlight.

Trees and plants shed their leaves. Many even die.

Some places are much colder to keep warm.

People wear thick boots and coats.

There’s very little food for animals to eat.

Some animals store food before winter begins.

They save enough for the coming winter.

Other animals migrate, or go to warmer places,

They return in the spring.

That is when the weather warms up.

Some places get lots of snow in winter.

Name 3 facts that you learned about winter.

How can you measure something? You can use crayons, bottles, or books.

You can use beans for measuring. A toy truck might be ten beans long. You can

also use blocks. A dollhouse might be fifteen blocks high.

What would you like to measure? What could you use to measure it? You can use

an apple, a peanut, or paper clip. How many apples high is your hat? How many

peanuts long is your sock? How many paper clips long is your notebook?

There is one thing you can always use as a measuring tool—-yourself! Carmen

uses her hands to measure a fish tank. The fish tank is six hands high. Carmen

measures a paper snake with her arm. It’s about one arm long. Her jump rope is

about four arms long.

Use yourself to measure things around you!

My bed is ____________ arms long.

A book is ____________ beans long.

A table is______________ hands long.

Butterflies have an interesting life story! Butterflies have four life stages.

First, a female butterfly lays eggs. Five days later, an insect comes out of the egg. This insect is called a caterpillar.

Second, the caterpillar grows a lot. The caterpillar is born hungry. It eats flowers and leaves all day long! The caterpillar grows quickly. It grows quickly that it becomes too big for its skin. So it sheds its skin and grows more. It sheds its skin four or more times!

The third stage is when the caterpillar changes into a butterfly. It does this inside a kind of shell that covers its whole body.

At stage four, a beautiful butterfly comes out of the shell! Then the butterfly flies away. Soon the cycle will start all over again.

Lisa’s Bluebirds

A nest of bluebirds is in a tree. Lisa can see them from her

bedroom window?

On March 21, she sees two grown birds and five little birds in

the nest. Lisa draws a few pictures of them.

On April 15, Lisa calls her mom to come and see. “You won’t

believe this!” Lisa says. “The little birds are trying to fly!” They

don’t fly very well yet. They flap their wings a lot.

In upcoming weeks, the little birds grow. By May 30, they aren’t

so little anymore. They fly all of the time. Lisa likes to hear them

sing. “When will they leave the nest?” she asks.

In the fall the bluebirds fly away. Lisa feels sad. She talks to the

clerk at the pet shop. “I haven’t seen the birds all week,” she says.

“The birds went far away to be warm,” the clerk tells her.

“They’ll fly back after the snow melts.”

The snow melts. It is spring again. The nest is not empty now.
