Chisholm Trail Elementary General Information

Arrival and Breakfast Procedures Students should arrive on time each day for school based on school hours above. All students (except bus riders) will enter the school through the main entry doors. For safety reasons, please do not open exterior doors for others. Supervision is not provided for students before 8:30. Students eating breakfast at school may enter the building at 8:30 AM and proceed directly to the cafeteria. Students eating breakfast will state their name to the clerk after receiving their meal and sit in the order they arrived. They will dump their trash and sit with their grade level after eating. Students not eating breakfast should arrive at 8:50. Students will be counted tardy if they enter the school after the 9:00 bell and need to report to the office for a pass to class. We will ask students and parents to wait outside until 8:50 and not in hallways, except in inclement weather. Dismissal Procedures At 4:40, students will be escorted to their designated exit by their teacher, who will remain outside to assist with supervision until 4:50 or when the area is clear of students. All staff members will be providing supervision until all students have been picked up or taken to the office to be proactive in our safety efforts and to help reduce possible problems at the end of the day. We ask that all parents please pick students up at designated dismissal time. Parents are asked not to wait in hallways for students and will be asked to wait outside. No student may be dismissed during school hours without authorization from the parent AND the school office. Parents or their designee must sign the child out in the office when requesting an early dismissal. These adults must have their names in the student information system. No child will be allowed to leave without communication from the office under any circumstances. Safety Patrol: Chisholm Trail Elementary School has a Junior Safety Patrol. Children should practice good pedestrian safety at all times. Parents delivering and/or picking up pupils at school should do so on the school side of the street. Students should cross the streets at designated crossings or at intersections. Adults should model safe procedures for children. Please do not park or leave your vehicle in the pick-up/drop-off lane. See procedures for parking/student pick-up in the appendix.

Chisholm Trail Elementary General Information Change of Address or Phone Changes in address, phone numbers, or email addresses need to be reported to the school ASAP. Please call 973-9400 to give us your new information. If we can’t reach you with your work or home numbers, we will try the emergency contacts as well. That’s why it is so important to keep all of your information up to date. We often find that emergency numbers change and are not updated. That becomes a problem because it leaves your child at risk of immediate care if there is a medical emergency. Chisholm Trail Elementary School Dress Code Parents/guardians are expected to use good judgment in sending students to school properly dressed. It is hoped that each student will take pride in being neatly dressed and groomed. During the winter, students are expected to dress warmly as outside recesses are held if weather permits. Following are the specific dress code regulations enforced at Chisholm Trail Elementary School: •Students will not be allowed to wear clothing or items that advertise alcohol or tobacco products, drugs, or contain references to sex or profanity or show suggestive, vulgar or obscene writing, pictures or symbols. •Students will not be allowed to wear any shirt/top that exposes any excessive amount of skin (such as halter tops, shirts without sides, cut offs, racerback/spaghetti strap tank tops, bare midriffs, tube tops etc.) shorts/skirts above the mid-thigh. •Slacks, jeans, shorts, etc. are to be worn at the natural waistline of students without chains. •Students will not be allowed to wear ANY clothing or items that give the impression of any gang affiliation. •Students will not be allowed to wear Lycra (biking) shorts, nor body-conforming jersey leggings, unless worn under other appropriate clothing. •Students should wear appropriate footwear at all times. Tennis shoes are required on PE days. Flip flops and shoes with heels are discouraged when physical activity (i.e. recess) could make it a safety concern. “Heelies” are not allowed at school unless the wheels are removed and stored during the school. •Students will not be allowed to wear headwear in the building (hats, caps, bandannas, etc.) unless it is a designated spirit day. Students will not be allowed to have colorful hair or extreme hair styles that may affect other students learning. This includes dying hair green for St. Patrick’s Day or other events of this nature. •Body “tattoos” are not allowed when it becomes a distraction to student learning. •Students will not be allowed to wear pajama pants or other sleep wear unless it is a special day designated for this. . Students will receive a warning and be loaned an appropriate piece of clothing (or may call home for a replacement) when wearing clothing that is inappropriate. Repeated offenses will result in a visit between the student and parent and/or principal; the school principal makes the final decision as to appropriateness of student dress.

Students that eat breakfast are allowed to enter the building at this time and proceed directly to the lunchroom. When students have finished eating, they must remain in the cafeteria until it is time to go to class at 8:50 unless they are directed to wait in another area by the Latchkey Director or Breakfast Supervisor. Expect students to be on time to class. In the event that a bus is late, the students will be permitted to eat breakfast. Teachers will be informed directly or an announcement will be made over the intercom. School Lunch Program: Chisholm Trail will operate a school lunch program as well as sell milk to students wishing to bring a sack lunch. The full price of hot lunch and milk are listed below. Free and reduced prices are available. Student Breakfast $1.25 Adult Breakfast $2.05 Student Lunch:$2.15 Extra milk:.35₵ Adult Lunch:$3.50 We utilize a meal time accounting system that requires us to follow the guidelines below: Lunches will be purchased in advance. Milk will be purchased in advance. Each child must pay in advance for meals and milk. No credit can be extended under this system. Lunch and milk money will be collected each morning. Communication will be provided when the child’s account balance is low. We are asking that students buy at least 10 lunches at a time. Application forms for free or reduced cost lunches are available through our office. A new form should be completed each time the family income changes. Absences If your student is to be absent due to illness, appointments, etc. please notify the school office before 9:30 each morning they are absent. BOE Policy #1460 states that regular school attendance is required of all pupils under Kansas Compulsory Attendance Law. The Kansas Compulsory School Attendance Law holds parent’s responsible for requiring a child under their control or charge who is between seven and less than eighteen years of age to attend school on a continuous basis. In compliance with requirements of the Kansas Compulsory School Attendance Law, reports shall be filed with appropriate authorities when a child is not enrolled in a public or non public school or when a child is enrolled in school and is inexcusably absent.

All absences are officially excused by the principal. You may be asked to provide a doctor’s note when there are appointments or extended illness. There are direct connections between attendance and student achievement. Chronic absenteeism will be confronted as needed. Family trips will not be excused.

3/5/7 Rule defining truancy: Inexcusably absent for a substantial part of a school day on either three consecutive school days, or five school days in any semester or seven school days in any school year, whichever of the aforementioned occurs first.

Tardies We expect students to arrive and be in class by 9:00 each morning. It is important to teach your student the importance of punctuality at an early age. We ask that you please check your child I at the office if they are late.. Picking up a student early is treated just like a tardy.

Bullying -Help us stop teasing, bullying, and harassment at Chisholm Trail! Students are encouraged to report incidents of suspected teasing, bullying and harassment to adults at school and at home. Our goal is to ensure that all students feel safe and respected. The Chisholm Trail staff will not tolerate harassment or intimidation (bullying) of a pupil based on race, religion, gender, national origin or disability by another pupil. Students, who violate this policy, after proper investigation, will be subject to sanctions including possible suspension and/or expulsion from school.

BOE Policies: Chisholm Trail adheres to the following USD 259 policies concerning discipline. Copies are available in the office or online at USD259.com. #1465 – Pupil Discipline and Staff Responsibilities #1116 – Sexual Harassment of Pupils #1464 – Pupil Behavior/Regulations #7310 – School Bus Safety and Discipline

Chisholm Trail Elementary Policies & Procedures

CHAMPS and MAC Each of our classrooms has a set of expectations that are shared to students via the CHAMPS or MAC format. This approach focuses on teaching expectations to students in order to prevent misbehavior. Teachers directly teach students how to behave responsibly in each major activity and transition. That is where CHAMPS comes in. CHAMPS stands for Conversation, Help, Activity, Movement, Participation, and Success. When students follow the CHAMPS expectations, it leads to Success. MAC is a similar concept used with our PreK, K, and some 1st grade classrooms. It stands for Movement, Activity, and Conversation. This is carried out just like CHAMPS. All work done by the school to clarify expectations for Common Areas will be reviewed and reiterated with students throughout the year. In addition, CHAMPS procedures will be reviewed and used in classrooms. It is expected for students to follow all expectations and procedures. Voice Level Scale

Voice level 0 Silence. Used in hallways during school hours, in classrooms or an assembly when an adult is talking or silence is needed.

Voice level 1 Whisper or “partner voice”. Used to communicate in classrooms as needed. Typical lunch room speaking volume.

Voice level 2 Conversation level. Used when speaking to an adult or speaking in class as needed to answer questions etc.

Voice level 3 Presentation level. Used when standing before a group or reading so the whole class can here. A voice that is louder than normal speaking. Often heard in noisy spaces or outdoors.

Voice level 4 Yelling level. Used outdoors or to attract attention in an emergency only. Student Discipline Procedures We believe that school and home must partner in communicating if there are behavior issues at school. Generally, teachers take care of minor infractions in the classroom and parent communication is not required. If behavior is severe or excessive, a child may be sent to a “buddy room” or to the office. The school administration will investigate and provide a range of consequences as necessary. Parents will be notified when a child is injured, or if the child is removed from the classroom for an extended length of time (in-school suspension). We hope you will support our decisions and follow-up at home as needed. Fighting, bullying, harassment, and weapons at school will almost always result in a suspension or possible expulsion. Please visit with your child about the policies of the school board and teach them to make good choices. Please review the District Code of Conduct brochure (in the appendix) with your student for behavior expectations for all students. Additionally, when severe behaviors occur where the safety of students is in jeopardy, staff are trained in Emergency Safety Interventions (ESI) to safely manage these behaviors. Information about ESI is in the appendix and on the CTE website.

Chisholm Trail Elementary Policies & Procedures Lunch Rules and Procedures We consider the cafeteria to be a service to accommodate student’s needs for nutrition and wellness. While in the cafeteria, we expect all students to follow the lunch procedures below: • Students should be lined up in this order: All students should be in alphabetical order. • Students should be quiet and in control while in line (Voice level 0). • Students will be seated at their class table. Students will sit in their assigned seats and stay in alphabetical order. Students

are not allowed to save spots for their friends or “squeeze in” between students who are already seated. • Once students are seated they will be allowed to visit at the appropriate volume until the last five minutes of the lunch

period (Voice Level 1). • Students are expected to follow all rules, procedures and appropriate voice levels while in the lunchroom. • Students should not bring any toys or playground equipment to the lunchroom. • Students should not share their food; however, they may give unopened milk or packaged items to a lunch aide who will

give it to someone else. • Students should stay seated at all times and raise their hand to indicate they need assistance from a lunch aide.

Assembly Procedures During assemblies, students are expected to adhere to the following procedures: • Move to the assembly area in an orderly and quiet manner. • When being seated, allow enough personal space so as not to be touching the person next to you. Students may talk softly

(Voice Level 1)) while waiting for the assembly to begin. • No shouting, booing or cheering – only applause • When the person who is introducing the assembly comes to the front and gives the quiet signal, all students respond

immediately. • Remind students that speakers are guests in our building.

Hallway Procedures • Students will walk quietly in the hallway at all times (Voice Level 0). • Students will face forward and walk directly behind the person in front of them. • Students will walk with their hands still at all times in a do nothing position (hands in pockets, hands behind back, hands

by side or hands folded). • Students who are sent alone should have an appropriate colored clip when walking in the hallway.

Chisholm Trail Elementary Policies & Procedures Bicycles/skateboards The Wichita Police Department discourages parents from allowing children to ride their bicycles to and from school, especially in areas of heavy traffic. CTE is considered a high traffic area. The school assumes the same position as the police and asks parents’ cooperation in our bicycle rule enforcement. Children in kindergarten, first, and second grades should not ride their bicycles to school. If a parent does allow a child to ride a bicycle to school, the following rules are in effect: • Parents will assume full responsibility for the safety of the child while riding the bicycle. • Bicycle helmets are suggested for all riders. • Bicycles must be parked in the bicycle racks and should be locked. • Students must walk their bicycles on and off the school grounds when pedestrian traffic is present. • Students must walk their bicycles across all street crossings adjoining the school. • All safety rules and laws established by the City of Wichita or State of Kansas must be followed. Buses The bus supervisor will meet the buses each morning and dismiss students to come into the building. Likewise, the bus supervisor will monitor students loading the buses after school. Bus students are to be released at 4:05 and should proceed directly to their bus. Primary students should be escorted. Please do not keep a bus student after school without making arrangements in advance with the parent for transportation. If a student is detained by a teacher, the teacher will be responsible for taking the student home. Bus behavior will be monitored by the bus supervisor and the school administration. This year, bus drivers and aides are being trained to implement CHAMPS, a system for delivering expectations for students which is the same that is used at school. Students can be removed from the bus if behavior warrants. Please partner with us to ensure your student is safe on the bus and follows the instructions of the driver. Please call the school if you are concerned about the bus or if your child is not picked up or dropped off on time. Note: Students who arrive late on the bus will not be counted tardy and will be offered breakfast if needed. Dogs/Pets Please do not bring dogs or other pets to school before or after school. Even on leashes or when held, animals can behave differently around strangers, other animals, or people who try to touch them.

Chisholm Trail Elementary Weather Policies

Cold Weather Our policy is that students do not go outside when the wind-chill is below fifteen degrees for recess. Please dress students appropriately for the weather! Administration will make an announcement over the intercom to inform the staff when indoor recess is necessary.

School Closing Information If winter weather conditions are of such a nature that the overall safety of students would be greatly jeopardized and the operations of the school district would be significantly impaired, a decision to cancel school will be made by 6:00 a.m. on the morning of a school day.

If school is cancelled due to weather: •An email will be sent to all district staff when a decision is made. •A Parent Link phone message and email will be sent to all students' and employees' homes. •Information will be posted on the district's main page, www.usd259.org and on the district's Facebook and Twitter pages. •Information will be broadcast on WPS-TV – Cox Cable Channel 20 and AT&T U-verse Channel 99. •A voice message will be posted on the Wichita Public Schools' Emergency Weather Information Hotline: 973-4259. •Local news media will be notified.

Decisions to close schools are based on a number of variables including actual and projected snowfall, icing and wind-chill factors, ability of the bus fleet to transport students, and assessment of street and road conditions, including snow/ice treatment and removal. Power and heat to buildings is also a factor that is considered.

Note: Bad weather is not an excuse for student absences when school is in session.

Severe Weather The United States Weather Service issues two types of storm warnings. The preliminary warning is a "Tornado Watch", intended to forecast a large area within which there is a predicted possibility of storms forming. A "Tornado Warning" is issued after a tornado has been sighted, indicating that the situation is serious and that people in the path of the storm should seek cover. It is when this "Tornado Warning" is issued that the necessary movement of students from the classrooms to the FEMA ROOM (gym) will take place. In case such an emergency arises, all possible precautions will be taken to ensure the safety of your children. The following procedure will be followed at school: • All students will remain in the building unless picked up by a parent prior to entering the FEMA safe room. • Students will be moved to the FEMA room (cafeteria). Once these doors are shut, we cannot open them for any reason

until we receive the “all clear” signal. Otherwise we could compromise the safety of those inside. Please be aware that the doors might not be opened until after the regular dismissal time.

• Our secondary shelter location is the large restroom in the hallway by the cafeteria. It has signs to direct you from the main hallway. If the FEMA room doors are locked and you need a place to secure yourself, please proceed to this location.

• School will not be dismissed early unless parents are notified by authorized personnel prior to dismissal time. • Arrangements must be made to ensure the safety of those children riding the bus to and from school should an

emergency should arise during the time children are on the bus. All schools have safety areas for traveling buses if they need to get to a shelter.

If a severe rain or snow storm should be in progress at dismissal time, the neighborhood children will be kept inside the building until the storm lets up or an authorized person picks them up.

Chisholm Trail Elementary Curriculum Considerations

Textbook and Fees Information Textbooks, library books, and other instructional materials are the property of USD 259, Wichita Public Schools. They are provided for the use of students who are enrolled in district schools and centers with the expectation they will be returned in the condition they were issued less reasonable wear and tear. Students who lose or damage instructional materials will be charged the replacement cost of the lost or damaged item(s).

Each student shall return all textbooks issued to the student at the time they withdraw from the school or at the end of the school year. Any student failing to return textbooks or who fails to pay for lost or damaged items or required school fees may as a result have holds placed on progress reports, report cards and diplomas, be excluded from participation in graduation ceremonies, extracurricular activities, sports and special programs/events. All fines must be paid by no later than the last instructional day of the school year. Students are required to pay the replacement cost for damaged textbooks and instructional materials. The costs of books and materials are available in the district’s Textbook Manager System.

Personal technology use at school Some parents now provide a cell phone for their student to carry to school. These should be kept in backpacks and need to be kept off during the school day. Students are discouraged from bringing electronic games, music players or other personal items of value. The school is not responsible for lost or broken personal items. These items will be confiscated if students are observed using them during the school day. Students are expected to follow BOE policy when it comes to computer use. We provide instruction in safe usage of the internet and equipment. Students who fail to comply with these policies will be subject to disciplinary action.

Homework The Wichita Board of Education policy #6340 states that “Homework is a valuable and valued tool in the learning process. Used appropriately, it can provide practice and reinforcement for previous instruction, provide opportunity to develop pupil responsibility, and involve parents more directly in supporting the learning process. For these reasons, pupils shall be given regular and appropriate homework activities in all grades. Our homework guidelines appear in the appendix. Tips for Homework Please provide a quiet place for your child to do homework and read, without TV, video games or other distractions. Allow your child to be as independent as possible and help them as needed without doing it for them. Students should read or be read to 20 minutes at home every night. Talk to your child’s teacher if you have questions or concerns about your child ‘s learning or their homework. 23

Chisholm Trail Elementary Medical Policies & Procedures

First Aid

If a child is injured at school, first aid will be administered with supplies from the health room. If the injury is serious, the

nurse, school administration, clerk, or secretary should be informed and the parent notified immediately. A supply of band-

aids will be provided for each classroom for minor cuts and scrapes. Students should wash the cut themselves and apply the

band-aid.

Accident Report Forms will be filled out for all “serious” accidents that happen at school. Parents will be notified immediately

if their child receives a blow to the head.

Students complaining of headaches, stomachaches, the “I don’t feel good’s”, etc. will be first dealt with in the classroom.

Some students learn that the health room is an escape from the things they are being asked to do in class. If a child

continues to not feel well, they will be sent to the health room. Please communicate health issues with the school nurse, who

is at CTE full time.

Medication

BOE policy 5316 states: “medication is not given at school, except when requested by written orders from the pupil’s

physician.” When a written request is received, a conference will be held with the parent, school administrator, school nurse,

and other school personnel involved.

BOE policy also states that the possession and consumption of non-food items such as vitamins, aspirins, food supplement

pills, and other nonprescription drugs by pupils in school is strongly discouraged. Item #2 of the same policy further states

that no aspirin or other non-food items of that general nature are to be provided to students by school personnel.

Students who need to take medication at school must bring such medication to the office as soon as they arrive at school.

Students will not give medication to individual teachers to be taken in the classroom. Teachers should not give out

medication to students under any circumstances.

•Single episode of diarrhea or vomiting without a fever

•Sore throat with hoarse voice and/or cough without a fever

Children should not come to school and will be asked to go home if they exhibit any of the following symptoms:

•ANTIOBIOTIC TREATMENT: any child receiving antibiotics must have received at least 24 hours of treatment before

returning to school.

•APPEARANCE, BEHAVIOR: unusually fatigued, pale, lack of appetite, difficult to awaken, confused and/or irritable.

reducing medication such as Ibuprofen, Motrin, Advil, Tylenol, Acetaminophen, etc.

•SORE THROAT: particularly with fever and/or swollen glands in the neck should be evaluated by a healthcare provider.

Note: If the child has strep they must be on antibiotics for a full 24 hours before returning to school.

•VOMITING: 2 or more times within the past 24 hours.

•RASH: body rash accompanied by fever and/or itching.

Volunteering at School Family engagement is one of the key pieces for school success. There are so many ways you can help! • At the basic level—students need appropriate rest and

nutrition each day, as well as support for homework. Read to or with your child every night!

• Communicate with the school—excuse absences, update phone numbers, let us know if there are changes we need to know about.

• Attend school events—We offer many activities throughout the year. We also expect all parents to participate in conferences twice each year.

• Join the PTO—We meet monthly to plan activities and raise money for the school. Please join us!

• Volunteer at the school—parents can help in many ways as a registered volunteer. You can tutor, help on the playground, help in the office with making copies, etc., or working with the “Helping Hands” group which helps to support classroom activities. You can also communicate with the teacher about how you can help them.
