JUNE 25 - AUGUST 24Five sessions

Campers will become engineers as they explore, build and learn about how things are made. There have been so many inventions big and small that have changed the world we live in today. Students will learn about the inventors and how their inventions work. Join us as we build and test toys and learn the science behind them. We will learn about pneumatics and hydraulics, build rockets and hydraulic machines. Campers will be immersed in our toy makers workshop as they construct and take home several different toy projects throughout the camp.

JULY 9-20 ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

SESSION E2a Fiber Arts From fancy fabrics to skeins of yarn, we’ll explore all the things we can do with fiber arts in this unique maker camp. We’ll learn the basics of felting, dye fabrics, learn batik, and start sewing. With fabric, yarn, felt, and more available at our fingertips, we’ll be able to let our creativity flow!

SESSION E2b Music and Lyrics Who doesn’t love a good song? Come discover how songs are made, and write your own original lyrics! We will learn how lyrics are like poetry…set to music! As we explore our poetic sides, we’ll make our own paper and practice calligraphy to present our work. We’ll learn about different poetry styles and forms. We’ll explore how some of our favorite musicians create the hits we love. We’d be surprised if there wasn’t some dancing involved as well!

SESSION E2c Coding and Electronics Camp Anytime you use a phone, computer, or play a video game you are sending electronic codes. The buttons you push on a keyboard, smartphone screen, or video game controller send coded electrical signals. Programs, apps, and games determine what that button means on your phone, computer or video game system. In this camp, we will be exploring both the devices that send codes and how codes work. In addition, we will be using interactive

robots, electronic building blocks, breadboards and more to explore the wonderful world of electricity and electronics.

SESSION E2d Survival Skills In this camp we’ll learn

how to survive in the outdoors. We’ll learn to use a compass,

follow a map, and to trust our five senses in our wooded surroundings.

We can identify plants and animals, as well as look for the tracks animals leave

behind. We’ll have cooperative shelter-building challenges as we connect with our natural surroundings, and learn about how primitive people survived the elements.

JULY 23-27 ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

SESSION E3 Traveler Camp Woodland Hill Campers are off on another great trip around the Capital Region for our most popular, field-trip-based camp! Each summer we visit museums, historical sites, and other areas of interest. In the past we’ve gone berry picking, explored on nature walks, visited farms, and enjoyed hand-on learning throughout the area we love! Join us for another great week of fascinating trips!

JULY 30-AUGUST 10 –––––––––––––––––––

SESSION E4a Starting from Scraps There is so much wonderful work we can do when we use our hands to build, create, experiment, and play with materials. In this camp, we’ll transform ordinary items into works of art, or functional pieces we can use at home. We’ll upcycle old objects, work with paper, wood, and other materials to build whatever our imaginations allow!

SESSION E4b Culinary Creations Let’s work with our favorite kind of palette: our sense of taste! In this camp we’ll get in the kitchen to learn all about good food and the skills we need to make delicious dishes. We’ll explore local ingredients and cook with the summer’s fresh food, harvest fresh veggies from the Woodland Hill garden beds, and learn gardening skills as we plant our favorite ingredients. Join us on our journey to become a mini master chef!

SESSION E4c DIY Puzzles & Board Games Do you like challenging people to rock, paper, scissors? Does the sound of rolling dice excite you? Do you look forward to matching your wits against an opponent not because you like winning, but just because it’s fun to be challenged? In this camp, you will be building your own puzzles and board games, solving elaborate breakout-box competitions against

other teams of campers, playing board games and learning about the mathematics of probability. Take a chance on having a great time and sign up for DIY Puzzles & Board Games Camp!

SESSION E4d Comic Writers In Comic Writers, we’ll learn about storytelling through graphic novels, comic books, and comic strips, both new and old. Starting with the basics of illustration, we will create characters and craft scenes of their dramatic stories. We will work on collaborative projects, and create scenes through the eyes of unusual characters. Get to work on your writer’s craft in this creative camp!

AUGUST 13-24 ––––––––––––––––––––––––––

SESSION E5a Natural Crafters The world around us is full of raw materials to make beautiful works of art, wonderful crafts, and even tools! In this camp, we’ll spend time outside to learn about our surroundings as we manipulate leaves, twigs, and more to make many projects. We’ll learn about artists who incorporate natural materials, and enjoy exploring the outdoors as we exercise both ourselves and our creativity!

SESSION E5b World Rhythms In this camp, participants will travel on a musical journey through international cultures. We will “travel” to Africa, Indonesia, India, and the Middle East to learn about each through their musical expression. We will explore ethnic scales, rhythms and songs through movement, singing, composing, and playing both traditional and “created” instruments. We’ll focus on our individual creativity as well as working together as a team.

SESSION E5c Basketball Camp In this camp, we’ll work on skills and drills in basketball. We’ll spend our time practicing our plays and putting our skills to the test. We’ll have special guest coaches from both men’s and women’s teams from local colleges, and explore how fun basketball can be for both boys and girls! We’ll play games and practice good sportsmanship as we shoot hoops in this fun camp!

SESSION E5d Lives of the Mohicans Join us in learning about the lives of the Mohicans who inhabited the part of the Hudson River Valley that we now call home. In this camp, we’ll discover how the Mohicans built their dwellings, how they obtained food, and investigate the tools they made and used. We’ll also immerse ourselves in the stories, traditions, and foods of the Mohicans through hands-on activities. We’ll become a part of the clan as we spend time in the replica Mohican wigwam and dugout canoes that are part of the WHMS campus.
