New Electric LNG Carriers Built by Samsung

Shipbuilders Samsung Heavy Industries of Korea have received orders for six new LNG Carriers to be equipped with electric propulsion. Four of these 153,200 m3 vessels are contracted from Danish ship owners A.P. Møller, and two are on order from the Japanese shipping company “K” Line. All six vessels are scheduled for delivery in 2008.

These LNG Carriers are among the first to take advantage of electric propulsion, which utilizes the Dual Fuel Diesel Electric (DFDE) engine concept to provide increased efficiency and environmental benefits.
