Natural and Synthetic Products-Gut and Nylon

During the pre-war years, LaBella handmade gut strings became theprofessional standard for orchestral instruments and classical guitarsthroughout Europe and America. Continually aware of any newdevelopments in the field of music and technological advances in theworld of manufacturing, E. & O. Mari recognized that they wouldeventually need to offer a wider selection of products. This commitmentto detail was fulfilled at the conclusion of World War II.

The post war era yielded many scientific advances involving plastics andtheir related products. Conscious of these achievements in manufacturing, professional guitarists placed new demands on string makers. Thesemusicians wanted longer lasting and more durable treble strings thatwere not susceptible to the effects of climate. Committed to satisfyingthis product demand, LaBella became involvedwith the creation and manufacturing of the firstnylon classic guitar strings - the 427 Pacesetter Elite. This set contained the Dupont Corporation's Tynexnylon products - monofilament strands for thetrebles and nylon filaments for the core of the silver-plated wound basses.

In the following decades, LaBella continued toimprove their products and create new features fornylon strings. In 1961, the convenient ball-endFolksinger nylon trebles were developed to offer theamateur guitarist an alternative to tying a knot at the instrument'sbridge. In the Seventies and Eighties, a unique method of grinding orpolishing nylon was perfected. This rectifying or buffing techniquewas applied to a special formula of monofilament extruded nylon, the high-density Nylon 101. E. & O. Mari offered these rectified nylonstrings to both guitarists and lutenists who wanted to increase theirartistic expression by having the feel of gut using nylon strings.

Today, our family tradition of modernization and excellencecontinues. The new Nylon 202 for our 2001 Series Classical & Flamencostrings provides the latest standard for classical guitarists. This superiornylon has long lasting properties and remains true to pitch.

Recently, a complete line of newly designed strings forlutes, early guitars and viols was developed. These gutand rectified nylon trebles, over spun and wound bassesare available in our separate String Catalogue for EarlyInstruments.

2001 Series®

The 2001 Series® Classical Guitar Strings are theproduct of years of intense research anddevelopment. During the formulation of the 2001Series, prototypes were tested worldwide by fineperforming artists and teachers. These guitaristsexpressed a need for classical guitar strings witha greater response, clarity and sustaining power. To meet this demand, LaBella redesigned boththe treble and bass strings according to newspecifications.

For this new product line company president,Richard Mari Cocco Jr. developed a newsynthetic monofilament nylon for the treblestrings. Seeking new substances for creatingsuperior strings he would not settle for thematerials offered by the allied industries. Instead,Mr. Cocco Jr., formulated an innovative materialcalled Nylon 202™. Its development coalescedonly after months of collaboration with engineersspecializing in polymers.

Nylon 202™ strings have a superior sensitivity tothe touch. They are extruded as a monofilamentthat will not fray. Strings made with themultifilament properties of carbon fiber canunravel causing finger lacerations. Our newtreble strings produce a greater auraltransparency and are capable of extraordinarysound projection.

The new design for the bass strings equals theachievements of the high density Nylon 202trebles. This construction improved the ratio ofwire exterior wound wrapping to the nylonfilament core. Different from the composition ofother strings, these basses produce a clearer andmore sustaining tone. The 2001 Series' uniquestring design surpasses all other classical guitarsets with their exceptional memory for pitch andconsistent sound production.

Offered in a variety of tensions for bothclassical and flamenco players,

LaBella 2001 Seriesstrings meet the demands of today’s professional and amateur guitarists.

La Bella's "Inner Circle" of endorsing artists work closely with us developing a wide selection of strings. We have been privileged over the years to be associated with some of the greatest musicians, who perform in many

different styles of music. Please see our website labella.com for a comprehensive list.

2001 Series®

The 2001 Series® Flamenco Guitar Strings are the first choice of professional flamenco guitarists in Spain andthroughout the world. In a class by themselves, these sets were developed in cooperation with leading flamencoguitarists. All set designs were tested and refined for more than two years - in recitals, recording studios and tabladperformances.

All Flamenco 2001 sets include the exclusive Flamenca Negra treble strings. Formulated especially for this style ofplaying, this unique black nylon has the sound, look and feel of a great flamenco string. Leading players feel thatFlamenca Negra trebles provide a spine-tingling aire. These strings possess a greater power, brilliance and a longerstring life than any other string design on the market. One particular flamenco guitarist said:

"I used the new Flamenco 2001 for hours of rehearsals and

tablad performances with a huge company of dancers. At the point

I would have broken most other strings - I hadn't even dulled

the brilliance of your incredible 2001 strings!"

The perfect string for a 1929 Santos Blanca, many guitarists believe thatFlamenco 2001 Light Tension strings create the most authentic flamenco soundavailable today. Recommended for older or very lightly constructed guitars, these strings produce a maximum volume and silvery brilliance with aminimal amount of stress on the guitar's neck, soundboard and bridge.

The quintessential flamenco set, Flamenco 2001 Medium Tension strings producea sound that is robust and luminous yet extremely flexible. Sensitive to the touchand responsive to the slightest change in tone or attack, these strings have atremendous ease of playing that will appeal to most players.

The top choice of modern-style flamenco players, Flamenco 2001 Hard Tensionstrings are designed for today's remarkable guitars and the exceptionaltechnique of contemporary concertperformers. Most heavier designed setsproduce a dull and thuddy sound. Thesehard tension strings are the exception andcreate a bright and forceful tone with a trueflamenco attack. This special constructionkeeps the traditional string gauges andoutlasts every other high tension string onthe market.

LaBella’s acoustic guitar sets are comprised of perfectly balanced strings and are available in a choice of many different gauges.Accommodating today’s acoustic players and their instruments, these varied set designs present many options for stringing.Only the finest American-made materials are used – high quality plain steel and superior bronze alloys. Handcrafted by skilledtechnicians, LaBella guarantees every string that leaves the factory.

Over the centuries, the problem of prolonging the life of metal strings has plagued both players and string makers. Today, somemanufacturers have discovered a quick fix method to prevent oxidation from occurring. They coat the metal strings with apolymer or synthetic material. This process stifles the wound string’s sound production and does not guarantee a longer life.Any surface treatment deadens the natural transmitting powers of the string and dampens the high overtones associated witha good wound acoustic guitar string.

Over the past two decades, the electric bass has shifted from the rhythm section to center stage as bassists have assumed thesoloist’s role. With SUPER STEPS® a n d SLAPPERS® , LaBella has followed suit by specifically designing strings to match thesetechnological advances and developing them over a period of years with input from the ‘Inner Circle’ of professional bassists.Company President, Richard Mari Cocco Jr. has worked closely with many of the world's foremost bass players to develop theunique design of SUPER STEPS. This product line has a clear and distinct sound while maintaining an exceptionally quickresponse. These flexible strings have an exposed core at the bridge which helps bring out the high overtone content of each note.Endorsed by Louis Johnson - the “King of Slap-Slappers”, the SLAPPERS product line unites the warmth and feel of nickel-plated strings with the brightness and strength of stainless steel. Their construction includes a stainless steel underlay on a steelcore with a nickel-plated outer wrapping.

Developed by LaBella’s president Richard Mari Cocco Jr. with Ned Steinberger, these strings have beenmanufactured to exact specifications for Steinberger’s revolutionary headless instruments. The LaBella companyis the legitimate maker of these patented Double Ball System strings which are specifically required for guitars &basses by Arbor, Burnside, Cort, Hohner, Lotus, Mach I and Status. Series Double Ball guitar strings can be used forthe ‘Transposing-Tremolo’ model guitar, however, for the best results we recommend the ST or STP Seriescalibrated sets.

NOTICE: Only Double Ball Strings by LaBella are calibrated for the correct length and tension needed for the ‘Trans-Trem’ operation. TheS Series are for the non-tremolo Steinberger instruments. The ST Series are for the early ‘Trans-Trem’ instruments with the double-lockingmechanism and with the set-screw at the locking nut. The STP Series are for all other ‘Trans-Trem’ instruments.

VIOLIN FAMILYViolin

The violin is the best known of all Western orchestral instruments. The smallest in a family that includes the viola, 'cello and doublebass, the violin developed in the 16th Century and descendedfrom the Medieval fiddle and rebec. All the members of the violinfamily have four strings, a tailpiece, a bridge, a waisted body, f-shaped sound holes and an arched top. The design has changedlittle since formalized by the great 16th Century Italian makersStradivari and Guarneri.

PROFESSIONAL® SERIESMETAL SETS

Chrome Steel Flat Wound on a Rope CoreRecommended for classical music, these strings have anexceptional bow response. With an even tonal balance string tostring and a great sustaining sonority, they also work well for allelectric upright basses.Set 7720L Light Tension A set with a lighter tension, these strings can be tuned a wholestep higher and used for the solo tuning classical repertory.

Set 7720S – Solo Extra Light TensionThis extra light tension set is perhaps the most flexible double bass stringon the market. Handcrafted by LaBella artisans, their constructionconsists of a nickel wrap over a woven wire core. Classical musiciansprefer this set for the solo bass repertory tuned one-step higher. Jazzplayers use the 7720S strings at normal pitch for performing both arcoand pizzicato styles. With a longer-life then most bass strings, theiramplified tone makes it the number one choice by most professionalplayers including Stanley Clarke, Harvie S., Brian Bromberg and RubenRodriguez.

VIRTUOSO SERIESSet 7780 – OrchestralThis orchestral bass set has a balanced sound string to string and is highlyresponsive to bowing. The nickel wrap on a core of woven cable ispreferred by classical players because this construction has a flexible feel,a sustaining sound, and has a long-lasting string life.

Black Nylon Tape Wound on a Rope CoreOver 20 years ago, LaBella worked together with both AttilaZoller and Ron Carter on this string construction. Obtaining thetone of gut and the sustain of metal, this string design is great forJazz pizzicato solos. The rope gut core with the black nylon tapeouter-wrapping provides a bright attack with a warm tone.
