Introduction:Sinceitwasrediscoveredatthebeginningofthenineteenthcentury,the
recorderbecameoneofthemain‘mass-instruments’inoursociety.Becauseofthe
recorder’ssimplicity,regardingthesoundandthefingeringoftheinstrument,itisoften
usedinmusiceducation.Thisisthemainreasonforthewidespreaduseoftherecorder,
especiallyasanintroductiveinstrumentforchildren.Thesopranorecorder,for
instance,isperfectlyshapedfortheirsmallhandsandtheembouchureofarecorderis
rathersimple(comparedtoreedordoublereedinstruments).Solittlepracticecanlead
tosatisfyingoutcomes.
Unfortunatelytheextensiveuseoftheinstrumentisnotreflectedinitspopularity.The
imageoftherecorderisverycontroversial:Itis,becauseofuseinmusiceducation,
moreseenasa‘children-instrument’,thanasaseriousinstrumentforprofessionals.
Thatis,forobviousreasons,aninsufficientpointofview.SinceIamplayingthe
instrument,IamconfrontedwiththisissueandIthinkitistimetochangetheimageof
therecorderinoursociety.
ThatiswhyIwouldliketosetupaneventforinterestedplayers,composersand
musiciansinordertogenerateamoreprofoundimageofthisgreatinstrument.
Therefore,theeventwouldconsistofmasterclasses,workshops,andperformances.Of
course,interestedpeoplewhoarenotworkinginthefieldofmusicarealsowelcome.
Besidesshowingpeopletherealvalueoftherecorder,thereisanotherintentiontothe
event:Itwillbeagreatopportunityforallparticipantstonetworkwithoneanotherand
toexchangecontactdetails.Iamsurethatmyeventwillbethetriggeroffuture
collaborationsofsomeoftheattendingmusicians.
IwouldliketoorganizethiseventinmyhometownBerlin.Thecityisverymuch
suitableforanyrecorderrelatedevent:TheBerlin-widerecordersocietyisveryactive
andinterestedinallsortsofactivity.Itwillbeeasyformetoorganiseandprepare
everythingthatneedstobedoneinBerlin,asIalreadyknowprofessionalandsemi
professionalplayerswhocouldhelpmewithsettinguptheevent.Still,therearea
numberofthingsthatIwillhavetoplanbeforehandinordertosucceedinorganizing
thisnetworkingevent:

processofmakingadecision,Iwillusethemethodofthe
circleofconfidentnetworking,asintroducedbyRuth
Guyinherlectureaboutnetworkingonthe24thof
October.Thankfully,thereisapossiblesolutioninthe
innercircleofmynetwork(theinnercircleconsistsof
myclosestcontacts,suchasmembersofmyfamily):My
uncleUlrichMoritz,whoisaprofessionalBerlin-based
drummer,foundedapercussion-schoolrightinthecentreofBerlin.The‘Groove’isa
well-knowninstitutionforpercussioneducationanddescribesitselfasthecentreof
rhythmandpercussion.Itisalsopossibletorentthelocationforprivateevents,suchas
parties,concerts,orothermusicalevents.Theschoolconsistof4differentroomswith
thefollowingsizes:
• RoomA–60squaremeters
• RoomB–40squaremeters
• RoomC/D–26squaremeters
• RoomE/F–20squaremeters
RoomAwillbethemainconferenceroom.
Consideringthesizeof60squaremeters,Iamplanningwithanoverallnumberof50to
60participants.However,Iwouldliketouseotherroomsaswell,asIamplanningto
organizedifferentactivitiesatthesame.Theworkshopat11:00h(seetimetablebelow),
forexample,couldbedividedintotwogroups:Onegroupforbeginnersandonegroup
formoreadvancedplayers.ThereforeIwilluseroomC/DandE/F,astheybothhavean
appropriatesizeforasmallgroup.FurthermoreIwanttoprovidealounge/common
roomforpeoplewhowanttotakeabreakinbetweentheactivities.Thiswillbesetin
roomB.
Guests:IknowtherecordersocietyinBerlinquitewellandIamsurethatthereare
manygreatpeoplewhocouldhelpmewiththeexecutionoftheevent.TheUniversität

Huntgeburth.IhadthepleasureofhavingmasterclasseswithProf.Huntgeburthand
enjoyingsomeofhisperformanceswithhischambermusicensembleSansSouciBerlin.
Thushewouldbemycandidateasaguestlecturewithintheprogramofmyevent.
Besidehisactivitiesasaperformer,heisalsomakingrecordersinhisprivatefactory.
Thatiswhyhecouldalsoexplainhowtheinstrumentismadeandprovidehistorical
backgroundinformationfortheparticipantsoftheevent.
FurthermoreIwouldliketoinviteprofessionalplayersandfellowstudentsofthe
MusikschuleFriedrichshain-Kreuzberg(musicschoolofFriedrichshain-Kreuzberg).I
startedbeingamemberoftheschoolattheageof5.FirstlyIwouldaskrecorderteacher
SylviaHinz,ifshewouldliketoparticipateinmyeventandbeoneofthelectures.Asshe
isaveryexperiencedteacher,sheistherightpersonforleadingtheworkshopsinthe
morning.MoreoverIwouldaskher,ifshecouldplayinoneofthethreeperformances.It
wouldbegreattohearherafterthelectureabout20thcenturyrecordermusic,because
sheisspecialisedinplayingcontemporarymusic,withtheuseofextendedtechniques.
Ofcourse,Iwouldinvitemyfellowrecorderstudentsofthemusicschoolaswell.In
regardtopromotion,theycouldalsobringotherrecorderplayersalong.Thiswouldlead
toaninterestinggatheringofambitiousandyoungmusicians.Theeventisagreat
opportunityforeveryonetonetworkandgettoknoweachother.
Bytalkingtootherplayers,IwillbehaveinthewaythatRuthGuyrecommends:Iwill
trytolistenfirstbeforetalkingaboutmyownideas.FurthermoreIlookforwardto
preparemyself,forexamplebyformulatingsomeconversationopeners.Afterfinishinga
talk,Ishouldmakesurethatmydialoguepartnerandmeexchangecontactdetailssuch
associalmediaorevenbusinesscardsinordertostayincontact.Thiscouldenablea
possiblecooperationinfuture.Iamhappytotalktocomposersaswellinordertohave
theopportunitytohavepieceswrittenforme,whichwouldbeamajorstepformy
musiccareer.
ThethirdguestlectureIamplanningtoinviteismyEnglishrecorderteacherCaroline
Jones.SheisaleadingfigureoftheSRP(SocietyofRecorderPlayers)inEnglandanda
verytalentedteacheraswell.Furthermoreshehasexpertknowledgeaboutthehistory

oftherecorder.Consequently,shecouldleadthelecturesaboutthehistoryofthe
recorder(bothRenaissance/Baroqueand20th/21stcentury)onthatday.Assheisnot
capableofspeakingGerman,Icanassistherintranslatingherlectures.Thisneedssome
preparationbeforehand.Shecouldalsoplaysomemusicinoneoftheperformances.Her
performancerepresentsthetransitionbetweenTelemannandthecontemporarymusic.
Themusicthatwaswritteninthefirsthalfofthe20thcenturyisamixtureoftraditional
Baroquemusic(formandinstrumentation)andcontemporarymusic(harmonic
developmentandfingeringtechnique).
Program:Iwillstructurethedayinawaythatcreatesacomfortableatmospherefor
talkingandnetworking.Thedifferentactivitieswillenablestimulatingdiscussions
aboutthetreatedsubjects.Afterabriefwelcome,theopeningactisgoingtobethefirst
performanceoftheday.IamsuggestingstartingwithplayingaBaroquepiece,probably
onebyGeorgPhillipTelemann,becauseheisarguablythemostimportantBaroque
composeroftheinstrument.Thesecondactivityofmyeventwillconsistofpractical
workshopsforeitherintroducingtherecordertobeginnersordiscussingrecorder
issueswithmoreadvancedplayers.
Theworkshoprequiresanumberofrecorders,whichwillbeprovidedbyme.Further
informationaboutthatcanbefoundinthefinancechapterofthisessay.Thefirstlecture
ofthedayisplacedafterthelunchbreakandisgivenbyCarolineJonesandme.The
BaroqueandRenaissancehistoryoftherecorderisarequirementfordiscussingdetails
afterwards.Thesecondperformanceofthedaybuildsabridgebetweenthetwolectures
aboutthehistoryoftherecorder:CarolineJonesplaysasonatinaofthe1940sor50s,
probablyapiecewrittenbyeitherL.BerkeleyorF.Reizenstein.
ThehighlightofmyprogramisthelectureofProf.Huntgeburthabouttheartofrecorder
making.Thiscraftisaveryfineandextremelydifficultactivity.Thisworkshopwillalso
beimportanttounderlinethefactthattherecorderisnotassimpleasmanypeople
mightthink,whenitcomestothephysicalaspectsofsoundcreation.
AfterthisexcitingcontributionofProf.Huntegeburth,CarolineJonesandmecomplete
thehistoricalinformationabouttherecorderwiththelectureon20thand21stcentury
music.Iwillprovideahand-outwiththemostimportantpointsofinformationofthe
threedifferentlectures.SylviaHinzwillsupportthefinallecturewiththelast
performanceconsistingofapieceofcontemporaryrecordermusic.Finally,Iamgoingto
leadaQ&Asession.Thisisveryimportanttomeinordertogetfeedbackontheday’s

program.Anysuggestionsforimprovementaregoingtobeevaluatedandimplemented
inthefollowingevents.Moreoverthelastsessionenablesthestartofdiscussionsand
conversationsamongthemusicians.Afterfinishingtheevent,Iamplanningtojoinand
talkaboutmyownplansandactivitiesasarecorderplayer.Onceagain,Iamthinkingof
RuthGuy’snetworkinglectureinthiscaseandwouldonlyapproachgroupsofthreeor
moretonotinterruptaprivateconversation.Iwilltrytospeaktoasmanypeopleas
possible,sothatIexpandmynetworksignificantly.

Food:ThetutorofthismoduleMrNicholasPetersrecommendedinhislectures,thatit
isalwaysgoodtoprovidesomefoodandrefreshmentsfortheguestsoftheevent.Thisis
whatIamplanningtodoaswell.However,Iwillnothireacateringcompany,asthe
numberofparticipantsiswith60rather
small.InsteadIaskmyfriendstobringsome
foodalongwhenattendingtomyevent.This
supportsthecomfortableatmospherethatI
wanttocreate:Itismorepersonaltoshare
homemadefood.Itevenisapotential
conversationopener.Thiscanbeveryuseful
whenitcomestothenetworkingaspectofthe
day.
Iamalsosavingalotofmoney,comparedtotheuseofaprofessionalcateringcompany.

1)Sponsoring:ItisobviousthatIamnotabletopayforeverythingthatIwantto
includeintheevent.ThatiswhyIwillhavetoapplyforfinancialsupportinBerlin.The
administrationthatmanagesfinancialsupportforartsistheSenatsverwaltungfür
KulturundEuropa(SenateAdministrationforCultureandEurope).Theyaregiving
studentshipsandadministrativesupportofamusicalprojecttosomeofthepeoplewho
areapplyingforsupport.
ThesupportIamapplyingforisaso-called‘workingstudentship’forartistsand
performers.Mostoftheapplicantswhoweresupportedwitha‘workingstudentship’in
2017receivedanoverallsumof12.000Euros.Ithinkthattheexpenditureofmyevent
wouldbenotashighasthisamount(seetablebelow),howeverIcouldusethemoney
forfurtherplanning.Iftheoutcomeofmyeventissuccessfulandsatisfying,Iwouldlike
toorganizemorerecorder-basedmasterclasses,workshopsanddiscussions.Thisis

whatIwouldexplaintothedepartment.ThusIamassumingtoaskforanoverall
supportof12.000Eurosaswell.
2)Tickets:Regardingtheextensiveprogramoftheday,Iwillchargearound40Euros
perperson.Childrenbelowtheageof5(ifattending)arenotgoingtobechargedand
thereducedpricewithstudentdiscountisgoingtobe25Euros.Theexpectedrelation
betweensoldticketsofreducedandregularpricesis2to1,thatmeansthatIexpect
twiceasmuchyoungerparticipantsthangrownups.Givenanoverallnumberof60
payingparticipants,thecalculationofticketsaleswouldbeasfollowed:

Theamountoftheincomethatisgoingtobegeneratedthroughthesaleofticketsis

HoweverthereismorethatIhopetoachievewithmyevent:Whencomparingthe
recorderworldofGermanyandEngland,itseemslikeEnglandismorecentralizedand
organised.ResponsibleforthatistheSRP,whichisthemainplacetogowhengettingin
contactwithotherplayers.Henceitiscomparativelyeasytonetworkandcollaboratein
England.Germanymissedtheopportunityofestablishingsuchanetwork.Itismuch
hardertogetanideaofwhatisgoingoninBerlinandGermanyinregardtotheexisting
recorderworld.Germanrecorderensemblesareactingmoreprivateandare
inaccessibleforotherinterestedplayers.Itisveryimportantforyoungplayerstohave
thepossibilityofplayingtogetherandattendingtoworkshops.UnfortunatelyIcannot
thinkofaplacetogoto,ifIwouldbeinterestedinsuchanevent.
Myrecorderdayshouldserveasastartingpointforcollectingapproachestosolvingthis
issue.IamsurethatmanyotherGermanplayersareawareoftheabsenceofa
comparableorganisationtotheSRPinGermany.Beingthefirstonewhoistryingthis
wouldbeahugehonourforme.IhopethatIwillfindsomesupportatmyeventinorder
tosucceedsettingthestartofaneweraintheGermanrecorderworld.
