Over the last few months Pendle Community Radio has began raising awareness of cancer to the local

    Pennine community.

With the help of media campaigns on the radio and TV, Pendle community Radio has managed to edu-

cate the ethnic minorities about bowel cancer and its symptoms.

If you are aged 60 69, youll be sent bowel screening kits every two years. If you are aged 70 or

    over, you can request a kit by phoning 0800 707 60 60.

The screening kits can help detect bowel cancer early, before you have any symptoms. The earlier the

diagnosis, the better your chances of survival.

Bowel cancer is Englands second most common cancer, with around 34,000 new cases each year.

When it comes to cancer death, its the second biggest killer, but it neednt be that way.

Regular bowel cancer screening hasbeen shown to reduce the risk of dyingfrom bowel cancer. Bowel cancer affectsboth men and women. Four out of fivepeople diagnosed with the disease areover 50 and those with a family historyof bowel cancer are more at risk. How-

ever, the sooner a patient is diagnosed, the better their chances of successful

    treatment.

Over 90% of those diagnosed with early stage bowel cancer are successfully treated. Taking a test and

visiting the doctor with any concerns could save your life.

The ethnic minorities have a tendency to shy away from taking the test due to lack of understanding. This campaign aims to educate such groups to help them detect cancers such as bowel cancer as early

as possible and save their lives.

If youve had blood in your poo or loose motions for 3 weeks, your doctor wants to know. Chances are its nothing to worry about, but these symptoms could be signs of bowel cancer, so tell

    your doctor.

Other bowel cancer symptoms include; A pain/lump in your tummy, feeling more tired than usual for

a length of time and weight loss.

If you are concerned about any symptoms, please contact your GP or visit NHS Direct Online.

On the 15th November 2012 Clive Grunshaw from the Labour Party was elected as Lancashire's

    first police and crime commissioner.

The voting turnout in Lancashire was very poor

at 15% but Clive did manage to secure 52.1% of

the votes cast, leaving his fellow opponents be-

hind and becoming our new PCC.

Clive Grunshaw was up against three other can-

didates from opposing parties. Afzal Anwar

stood for the Liberal Democrats, Tim Ashton forthe Conservatives and Robert Drobny for the

    UK independence Party.

Our new Police Crime Commissioner promised that, if elected, he would ensure the force was ac-

cessible, fit for purpose and able to deliver the protection, security and service that the people of

    Lancashire "want and deserve".

His key pledges are as follows: Defend frontline policingmaintain a visible policing presence

    Protect neighbourhood policingparticularly PCSOs

Ensure a swift and effective response to reports of anti-social behaviour

Prioritise the fight against domestic violence and child sexual exploitation

Champion the rights of the victim

    Target persistent and prolific offenders

Two months on, the residents of Lancashire will now begin to see if Clive Grunshaw is living up to

    this pre election promises.

Electing Police Crime Commissioners was criticised by many with some members of the public

choosing not to vote and others spoiling their ballot papers in protest.

The negativity surrounding these elections was evident in the turnout, however we would still like to

congratulate, our worthy winner, Clive Grunshaw on his new post and wish him the best of luck.

We hope he is able to win back public confidence in policing.

East Lancashire Hospice are here to offer support to members of your family who are coping

with a terminal illness, either in their own homes or in the hospice.

The East Lancashire Hospice strongly believes that their patients should be given an option of wherethey are cared for, either in their hospice or in their own home its all about choices. Therefore EastLancashire Hospice doesnt exist just within the building that bears their name, their care reaches out to

patients coping with a life limiting illness in their homes within Blackburn, Darwen, Hyndburn and theRibble Valley through their Hospice at Home team.

Volunteer sitters make up the rest of the team and are crucial to helping East Lancs Hospice care formembers of the community along with their families, who are coping with a terminal illness; providingmuch needed breaks for carers and families in difficult situations at very sad times.

What the volunteers say about Hospice at Home:

    Freda Vallett has been a volunteer at East Lancashire Hospice for more than 20 years. Freda said;

People say to me you put such a lot in, but my answer is I get far more out of it than I put in.

She continued; I walk away and I think I helped somebody along the way today, Its very rewarding.

Our ambition is to be here when we are needed and to make things easier for the patient.

Freda said; Were not only here for patients; were here for their loved ones and their nearest and

dearest. We support them as best as we can.You sometimes find these people will find it easier tospeak to a volunteer because were not a doctor or a nurse.

She said: The volunteers are supported by the hospice every step of the way, and are not put in a situa-

tion where we dont feel comfortable.

She went on to say; Sometimes a patient will say I dont want to talk today and that is fine, or they

will talk forever, and that is okay too. Its about providing whatever they want.

    A message from the hospice:

East Lancashire Hospice extends its arms out to care for our patients and their families where theyneed it and when they need it but we couldn't do this without the support of our community and peo-ple such as Cllr Zamir Khan, Mayor of Blackburn with Darwen who is this year supporting the hospice

and Cllr Suleman Khonat who helped to raise funds at Lancashires biggest Street Party this year.

local community in the East Lancashire area.

Our mission is to enrich the lives of the local community

through the provision of education, information and training through

modern art, media and digital technologies.

One of our key projects is the Pendle Community Radio

station which provides an invaluable service to the East Lanca-

    shire community.

Pendle Community Radio is now offering

local businesses the opportunity to adver-

tise or sponsor programmes on the radio.

Pendle Radio is very popular amongst the

local community & is also available on the

internet, as such it offers a great opportunity for businesses to ad-

vertise their products to this growing consumer demographic.

The expense of advertising on other types of media can be a re-

strictive factor especially for smaller businesses and this is precisely

where Pendle Radio can help. Ad spots can be bought by the sec-

ond and as such offer great value for money.

The science of advertisement suggests repetition and simplicity are

the key to a good radio advert, the cost of ads on Pendle Radio

means even smaller businesses can now purchase repetitive ads.

Pendle Radio can also author and produce your advertisements for

    you.

If you would like to advertise on Pendle Radio please contact us via
