    The Five-part Process

    Part 1: Introduce the story.

Lead an introductory activity (or two) (see Introduce, page 7).

    Part 2: Read the story.

Read the story aloud to the kids and define new words (see Leaders Read, page 10) or have the kids read the story in pairs or small groups if the reading

level is appropriate (see Kids Read, page 20).

    Part 3: Discuss the story.

If you read the story aloud to the kids, ask some of the group discussionquestions listed in the guide (see Discuss, page 12). If the kids read the story

in pairs or small groups, they can discuss the questions listed in Talk! (page 21)

on their own. Then reassemble the kids and discuss the book together.

Part 4: Connect to the story.Lead the kids in a connection activity (or two) to deepen the connection

between the storys content and the kids lives (see Connect, page 13).

Part 5: Wrap up the story.

Lead the kids in an activity that extends their thinking about the story, reviewsnew words, or brings closure to the book (see Wrap It Up! page 17).

Although each book in the AfterSchool KidzLitprogram is different, follow the

same process to introduce the story, read and talk about it, and help the kids see

how it relates to their own lives. This process should be done over several days.

For more ideas and information about the process, see Explore the Five-part

Process, page 16, in the Quick Tips Plushandbook.

Review the Five-part Process to help you lead the guide. Read

through Whats the Story? Heads Up! Some Things the Kids

Will Need to Know, and Big Ideas for an overview of the book and

the themes emphasized in discussions and activities. You and the kids

may discover other themes as you read.

    Get Ready

    Jaspers Day

    does not have

    page numbers.

    You may wantto write them

    in, starting

    with the title

    page. Page 3

    begins with,

    Jasper is still

    sleeping

    NOTEWhats the Story?

Riley and his family want to make their last day with their dog,

Jasper, a celebration of all theyve done together. Jasper has

cancer that cannot be cured, and the family has decided to have

a vet put Jasper to sleep (give him an injection so that he dies).

They do not want Jasper to get sicker and sicker and suffer more.

Riley and his parents spend their last day with Jasper doing

things that Jasper enjoys and remembering good times together.

Finally Riley comes up with an idea to keep remembering the

    good times.

Some Things the Kids Will Need to Know

Dogs can get cancer, just as people can. Cancer in dogs can

affect the skin, bones, or other organs. Some cancers grow

slowly and others progress very quickly.

Some Big Ideas Suggested by the Story

    Friendship

The friendship between people and their animals canbe powerful.

Animals and people can show their love for one another with

body language and special things they do for each other.

Family Family members can support each other to get through

    hard times.

Family discussions and shared decisions can be important

    when making difficult choices.

Families create special memories together and those memories

    can be fun to share.

    Pets are important family members.

    Courage

It is hard to be strong when we are sad.

Sometimes we feel more courageous when we are not alone.

Sometimes we have to make hard choices when others are

    suffering.

    Introduce

    Choose 1 or 2 Activities

Lead an introductory activity (or two) to build curiosity and excitement

about the story. An introduction prepares the kids for the characters

and ideas they will encounter and gives them a chance to build on

what they know from their own life experiences.

    Family Treasures

    1520 minutes

    Materials

    Paper

    Crayons, markers, or colored pencils

    1. Discuss and draw. Tell the kids that the book they will hear is

about a family who has had their dog for a very long time. Ask

the kids to draw a picture of something special their family

has had for a long time. For example, it could be a photo, a

quilt, a piece of clothing, or a pet. Have them write a caption

    for their picture.

    2. Share. Have the kids share their pictures, read the captions,

and tell the group why they chose what they drew.

    Appreciation Circle

    2025 minutes

    Materials

    Foam or sponge ball

    1. Explain and play. Explain that in the book the kids will hear,

a boy and his parents think of all the special things theyhave done with their dog over the years and the ways they

appreciate him. Tell the kids that they will talk about ways

they appreciate each other. Ask the kids to sit in a circle. Have

the first person toss or pass the ball to another person in

the circle. After the first person passes the ball, she will say

something good about the person. For example, she might

say, I appreciate Nelson because he helped me with my

math homework yesterday. Keep passing the ball until all the

kids have had the chance to pass the ball and share a good

    thing about another person.

    2. Discuss. As a group, discuss:

QHow did it feel to hear appreciation from another person?

QHow did it feel to give appreciation?

QWhy is it important to tell others why we appreciate them?

    Cool Words

Help the kids understand each suggested cool word as you come

to it in the story. As you read the story, read the word, briefly define

it, and reread the word and the rest of the sentence (for example,

And she rappedrappedmeanshit sharply and quicklyand

she rapped the desk with her ruler). You may want to write the

word and its definition on a self-stick note and attach it to the

page where the word appears. After the story, ask the kids if they

remember any words that stood out in the reading. Invite the kids

to pick words they like or want to remember and write them.

sprawled (p. 3): sitting or lying with arms and legs spread out

mooching (p. 7): getting something by begging or taking

something that belongs to someone elsecontagious (p. 7): easily spread from one person or animal

Give the kids a chance to react to the story. First in pairs, and then asa whole group, discuss some of the questions suggested below.

    Discuss

QHow did this story make you feel?

QDid it remind you of anything that has happened to you?

QHave you ever had a pet that died? If yes, what are yourmemories of that time?

QRileys family makes the decision to have Riley put to sleep.Do you think you would make the same decision? Why or

    why not?

QWhy do you think Riley and his parents decide to take the daytogether to do the things Jasper likes to do?

QWhy does Riley say that it was the hardest day he has

ever had but a good day?

QHow is Riley a good friend to Jasper? How is Jasper a goodfriend to Riley?

QHow has a person or animal been a good friend

    to you?

    Connect

    Choose 1 or 2 Activities

Use connection activities after the reading to help the kids take a deeper

look at the storys content and themes, the characters actions and

motives, and how the book relates to their own lives.

Visit with a VetTwo sessions (one 15-minute session to brainstorm; one35-minute session for a guest speaker and follow-up)

    Materials

    Board or chart paper

    Chalk or markers

    Paper or note cards

    Pens

    1. Prepare in advance. Invite a local veterinarian to visit your site.

    2. Discuss. Review that, in the story, a veterinarian gives Jasper

a shot to put him to sleep. Tell the kids that a veterinarian

will come to share information about taking care of pets and

keeping them healthy. Have the kids brainstorm questions

they want to ask the veterinarian, and write the questions on

    the board or chart paper.

    3. Guest speaker. Introduce the kids to the veterinarian. Share

may want to take the children to the vet hospital.

    Jasper Memory Book

    3545 minutes

    Materials

    Magazines

    Paper

    Crayons or markers

    Stapler

    1. Create memory pages. Remind the kids that at the endof the story Riley looks at his picture with Jasper on his

nightstand. This gives him the idea to make a memory book

of Jaspers life. Show the kids the pictures at the end of the

book that look like photographs. Have the kids discuss what

is happening in some of the pictures. Tell the kids that each

of them will create a page for Rileys book, using pictures

from magazines or by drawing their own pictures. Ask them

to write a sentence or two about the memories they created.

The memory can be something from the book or a new idea.

    2. Share. Have the kids share their page for Rileys memorybook. Ask one of the kids to design a cover for the Jasper

    Ode to Someone Special

    3035 minutes

    Materials

    Paper

    Pencils

    1. Talk and write. Tell the kids that an ode is a form of poetry,

full of emotion, that is used to praise something. Explain that

they are going to write odes. They can either pretend to be

Riley and write an ode to Jasper or they can write an ode to

their own pet, a family member, or another special person

in their lives. This poem should have at least four lines of

admiration and praise for their special person or pet. Here is

an example you might want to share with the group:

    Ode to Jasper

Jasper, your cheerful face greeted me each morning,

Your eager panting told me it was time for a walk,

I saw a friendly wag of the tail at the end of my school day,

And late at night, your warmth on my bed gave me comfort.

I will miss you, my friend.

    2. Share odes. Pair the kids and have partners share their odes

with each other. Then have the volunteers read their odes

Rileys life. Explain that they will invent their own pet. Have

each kids pick a rock and create a pet by painting the rock

    and gluing objects to it.

    2. Write. Give the kids index cards and have them write about

their pet rocks. What is your pet rocks name? What kind of

personality does it have? What are the instructions for caring

    for the pet rock?

    3. Create a pet-rock museum. Display the pet rocks and

with that person or pet and map out the day. Remind the kids

to think about the special things they have done together in

the past. Here is an example you could share with the group:

Special Day with Aunt Sue9:00 Meet Aunt Sue at my house

9:15 Make and eat breakfast together. Try the recipe for

fluffy pancakes that Mom made a few weeks ago.

10:15 Walk to the park and read a book together. Take the
