With the goal of sensitizing the population and contributing to a balance of social, economic and

image development in Puerto Escondido, this network of spe-cialists and friends, who have been meeting independently for four years, offered six 12-hour days in March of consultation, de-worming, vaccinations and extensive education. module toured different neigh-borhoods of Puerto: Aeropuerto, Brisas de Zicatela (La Punta), Río Grande (Biblioteca Municipal), Las Flores and Marinero, plus a final clinic, not open to the pub-lic, dedicated to the stray dogs in the area of San Lázaro.

The coordinator explained that the process involves a system-atic procedure divided into four stages: administering a muscle relaxant-anesthesia, shaving, surgery and recovery. During my visit to Las Flores I observed

that the neighborhood residents write their names on a list and wait for their turn together with their pets while they observe a series of operations performed by the experienced veterinar-ians, Yolanda Hernández and Rubén Rocha. In an orderly fashion they skilfully spay and neuter (perform hysterectomies and castration surgeries) within a 20-minutes time frame. The natural function of these organs is to generate the hormones that provoke the oestrus period in

females and its perception by the males. It occurs twice a year in dogs, birthing between one and 18 puppies each time, while in cats it varies because they are always fertile, with litters of between three and eight.

The information board hung at the entrance of each module explains that one female cat can give birth to up to fourteen mil-lion kittens in nine years.

This is why it is seen as neces-sary to perform three annual campaigns. It is worthy labor for public health that fosters awareness of the idea that “a street dog comes from a pet with an owner,” says Alejandro. So before mistreating the stray that loiters around your home or business or that knocks over garbage cans looking for food, try to think of it as the product of someone’s irresponsibility, perhaps of a neighbour’s or fam-ily member’s.

To minimize the negative impacts that come with animal overpopulation, owners are also educated about the basic steps for hygiene that they should

follow to prevent possible infec-tions or zoonosis: vaccinate the puppies and administer anti-rabies treatment once a year, de-worm them, bathe them once a month with anti-flea soap (low cost), prevent or treat ticks with anti-tick products (different options, prices and types), sterilize them, feed and water them.

In the case of home guard dogs, walk them. The coordi-nator observed that the home should be properly fenced to prevent dogs from attacking pe-destrians, as they instinctively protect the owner’s turf. “It is the least we should do for those that give us protection, motiva-tion, affection, loyalty and also reduce our stress levels.”

The funds raised by the cam-paign are invested in medica-tion and high-quality materi-als that guarantee good pet health and free the owner from the post-surgery recovery. The campaign also administers antibiotics, analgesics, long-lasting anti-inflammatories and immunity stimulants that

Su coordinador precisa que se trata de un procedimiento sistemático dividido en cuatro etapas: relajante muscular-anes-tesia, rasurado, cirugía y recuper-ación. Fue lo observado en mi visita a Las Flores: los vecinos se apuntan en una lista y esperan su turno junto a sus mascotas mientras observan tranquila-mente una serie de operaciones a cargo de los experimentados veterinarios, Yolanda Hernández y Rubén Rocha. Con destreza y pulcritud ejecutan en un lapso aproximado de veinte minutos histerectomías (extracción de

ovarios) y cirugías de castración pues la acción natural de estos órganos es generar las hormo-nas que provocan el celo en las hembras y su percepción por el macho. Ocurre dos veces al año en caninos, procreándose entre uno y dieciocho cachorros cada vez, mientras que en gatos esto varia porque siempre son fértiles, llegando a nacer entre tres y ocho felinos.

El cartel informativo colgado a la entrada de cada módulo nos pone en alerta, una sola gatita puede tener una descendencia de hasta catorce millones en nueve años, por tal motivo es necesario efectuar tres jornadas anuales pues se trata de una vali-osa labor de salud pública que fomenta conciencia en torno a la idea de que “un perro de la calle proviene de una mascota con dueño”, puntualiza Alejandro. Entonces, antes de maltratar al vagabundo que merodea su casa o su negocio o bota su basura en busca de alimento intente, por favor, otra vía de acción y piense que es producto de la irrespon-sabilidad de una persona, tal vez de su vecino o un familiar.

Para minimizar los impactos negativos que conlleva la so-brepoblación animal, durante

la actividad también se educa a los dueños sobre los pasos básicos de higiene que deben seguir para evitar posibles infec-ciones o zoonosis: vacunarlos de cachorros y continuar aplicando la antirrábica una vez por año, desparasitarlos, bañarlos una vez al mes con jabón antipulgas (de bajo costo), prevenir o tratarlos con productos antigarrapatas (diferentes opciones, precios y ti-pos), esterilizarlos, alimentarlos e hidratarlos; y en el caso de los guardianes del hogar, pasearlos. El coordinador resalta que la vivienda tiene que estar debida-mente cercada a fin de que no muerdan a un transeúnte, ellos instintivamente protegerán el área de su amo, “es lo mínimo que debemos hacer por quienes nos brindan protección, mo-tivación, cariño, son leales y además nos ayudan a disminuir los niveles de stress”.

Los fondos recaudados se in-vierten en medicinas y materia-les de alta calidad que garantizan una buena salud en las mascotas y liberan al dueño de los cuida-dos post operatorios. La cam-paña contempla la aplicación de antibióticos, analgésicos, desin-flamatorios de larga duración y estimulantes inmunológicos

que les ayudan a fortalecer sus defensas.

Al cierre de esta historia Ale-jandro García junto con el pro-fesor Jaime Arroyo actúan en la campaña anual de vacunación antirrábica que se efectúa los primeros fines de semana de abril en distintas colonias de los Municipios San Pedro Mixtepec y Santa María Colotepec. Durante el año practican quimioterapias a mascotas afectadas, actual-mente atienden seis casos y dan tratamiento a animalitos enfer-mos o responden emergencias.

We ought to have pointed this out last month but we didn’t really think it would be neces-sary. However, it appears local authorities are so focused on the new traffic signals they’ve forgotten about the old ones.

As of presstime, we figure it’s been close to a month since the lights stopped working in front of Zimat, at the highway and 3a Norte. It’s not the busiest inter-section in town but it does see its share of traffic, Zimat trucks among them.

This correspondent found himself in a race with one of those semis while making a mad dash to cross the highway. Fortunately, there were no casu-alties. But the incident did point out how dangerous it now is. One can actually see where the wires to one light have been cut or disconnected. They dangle in the breeze, a reminder to all drivers that it’s a place to avoid.

Small but mighty is our hope-ful way of describing Puerto Escondido’s representation at the big Mexican travel show, held this year in Puebla.

Tianguis Turístico 2013 took place in March and drew 673 tour operators and other travel industry representatives from around the world. Oaxaca, Huatulco and Puerto Escondido had booths at the event and, for the first time, so did Chinantla, Mazunte and Pueblos Manco-munados (there is an interesting story about the latter at bbc.com/travel).

It is often lamented here in Puerto that Huatulco gets all the

goodies from Oaxaca when tourism pro-motion pesos are be-ing handed out. But if we can only send four people from in-dividual tourism op-erators, compared to Huatulco’s 10, to an event such as Tianguis Turístico, we should instead lament our lack of initiative.

T h a n k f u l l y, Sa n Pedro Mixtepec was there in the person of then-Presidente Lalo Rojas and the regidor of tourism. And, of course, we were well represented as usual by the Association of Hotels and Motels of Puerto Escondido, who seem to turn up wherever potential tourists might be lurk-ing.

As for Santa María Colotepec, there was no sign. Perhaps the completion of the new highway to Oaxaca will encourage its authorities to get out a bit more.

Speaking of the new high-way, the optimism surrounding this project is more than just hype. On a recent drive into the boonies, after leaving the coast highway and making for Valde-fores, an El Sol correspondent, after bouncing around on an old goat track for half an hour, was startled to see a large number of trucks, excavators and workers up on a nearby mountainside, carving an autopista in the wil-derness.

We continued to see activity

as we progressed farther and crossed the new highway at the location of an overpass not far from the highway to Colotepec. We were savoring the prospect of a 2-1/4-hour drive to Oaxaca (that’s the most optimistic esti-mate we’ve heard yet) but were brought back to reality by one of the workers, who figured it would be another three years before the highway was com-pleted.

However, the wife of one of the project’s engineers told me two months ago it would be done in 18 months. Let’s split the dif-ference, shall we, and keep our fingers crossed.

How clean are the beaches? Not clean enough, it seems, to receive the Playa Limpia certi-fication of the federal govern-ment. Only Chahue, in Huatul-co, has been so certified of all the beaches in Oaxaca. And Chahue is one of only 17 throughout Mexico.

It’s not that pollution levels are too high. According to recent measurements at local beaches, bacteria levels are all within the federal limits of 100 per 100 ml. Bahía Principal was the highest, coming in at 89 in March, while Carrizalillo and Zicatela were the lowest at 16. Marinero was 23 and Puerto Angelito 40.

That federal limit is for the Playas Limpias certification. The water is considered safe for recreational use anywhere up to 200.

The other requirements for certification don’t seem oner-ous: no visible scum, no grease and no fecal matter. Well, maybe that last one, given that dogs aren’t fussy about where they go — streets or beaches, they’re all the same.

Surely this would be a very good designation to have for the sake of tourism. Let’s get on this — maybe once the traffic signals are all working again.

Deberíamos haber mencio-nado esto el mes pasado pero no pensamos que sería real-mente necesario. Sin embargo, al aparecer las autoridades locales están tan enfocadas a los nuevos semáforos que se han olvidado de los antiguos.

Al momento de ir a prensa, es-timamos que ha pasado casi un mes desde que el semáforo dejó de funcionar en frente de Zimat, en la carretera con 3ª Norte. No es la intersección más concur-rida de la ciudad pero tiene su parte del tránsito, incluyendo los camiones Zimat.

Este corresponsal se encontró en una carrera con uno de estos camiones cuando atravesaba frenéticamente la carretera. Afortunadamente no hubo

heridos. Pero el incidente de-mostró lo peligroso que está ahora. Se puede ver donde los cables de una luz se han cortado o desconectado. Cuelgan en la brisa, un recordatorio a todos los conductores que es un lugar a evitar.

Pequeña pero fuerte es nues-tra manera esperanzadora de describir la representación de Puerto Escondido en el gran evento de turismo Mexicano que se llevó a cabo este año en Puebla.

del turismo del mundo entero. Oaxaca, Huatulco y Puerto Escon-dido tenían puestos en el evento y, por primera vez, también los tuvo Chinantla, Mazunte y Pueblos Mancomunados (hay una historia interesante acerca de este último en bbc.com/travel).

Se lamenta con frecuencia aquí en Puerto que Huatulco se lleva todo de Oaxaca al momento de repartir los pesos para la promoción del turismo.

Pero si sólo somos capaces de enviar a cuatro de los operadores turísticos individuales, comparado con los 10 de Huatulco a un evento como Tianguis Turístico, debería-mos más bien lamentar nuestra falta de iniciativa.

Afortunadamente, San Pedro Mixtepec estuvo presente a través del presidente de entonces, Lalo Rojas, y el regidor de turismo; y por su puesto estuvimos bien representados como siempre por la Asociación de Hoteles y Moteles de Puerto Escondido, quien da la impresión de aparecer allí donde haya turistas potenciales.

De Santa María Colotepec, no hubo señal. Quizás la terminación de la nueva carretera en Oaxaca les alentará a que salgan un poco más.

A propósito de la nueva car-retera, el optimismo en torno al proyecto es más que puro bombo. En un paseo a lugares remotos, después de dejar la carretera de la costa hacia Valdefores, un cor-responsal de El Sol se sorprendió, después de dar brincos por media hora sobre un camino para cabras, de ver un gran número de camio-nes, excavadores y trabajadores en la ladera de la montaña, recortando una autopista en medio de la na-turaleza.

Seguíamos viendo actividad con-tinuando más allá y cruzando la nueva carretera donde se ubica un sobre-nivel cercano a la carretera hacia Colotopec. Estábamos sab-oreando la posibilidad de un viaje de 2-1/4 horas hasta Oaxaca (que es el cálculo más optimista que hemos escuchado hasta ahora) pero volvimos a la realidad con uno de los trabajadores, quien estimó otros tres años antes de que se complete la carretera.

Sin embargo, la esposa de uno de los ingenieros me dijo hace dos meses atrás que estaría listo en 18 meses. Les propongo que dividamos la diferencia en dos y que mantengamos nuestros dedos cruzados. Los equipos de

¿Cuán limpias son las playas? Al parecer no lo suficiente-mente limpias para recibir la certificación Playa Limpia del gobierno federal. Sólo Chahue en Huatulco ha recibido tal cer-tificación entre todas las playas de Oaxaca; y Chahue es uno de sólo 17 en todo México.

No es que los niveles de con-taminación sean demasiado altos. Según las mediciones recientes en playas locales, los niveles de bacteria están todos dentro de los límites federa-les de 100 por cada 100 ml. Bahía Principal tenía los más altos, marcando 89 en marzo, mientras Carrizalillo y Zicatela tenían los más bajos con 16. Marinero tenía 23 y Puerto Angelito, 40.

Ese límite federal es para la certificación de Playas Limpias. El agua se considera apta para uso recreacional hasta 200. Sin embargo, las instalaciones de baños públicos por la costanera deberán conectarse a un siste-ma de tratamiento. Esto ya está ocurriendo en Zicatela y una estimación indica que todos

estarán conectados dentro de los próximos meses.

Los otros requerimientos para la certificación no parecen onerosos: ausencia de sucie-dad o espuma visible, grasa y

materia fecal. Bueno, quizás este último ya que los perros no se fijan donde hacen sus necesidades � calles o playas, les da lo mismo.

Por cierto que ésta sería una

buena designación a obten-er para el bien del turismo. Pongámonos a trabajar en esto � quizás cuando los semáforos estén funcionando otra vez.

Familias, grupos de amigos y muchos jóvenes iniciaron con energía una carrera en Puerto Escondido. El circuito se dividió en tres segmentos de 3, 5 y 10 km dejando a la voluntad y resistencia de cada atleta la meta a conseguir.
