Becoming Truly HumanBecoming Truly Human is a program put out by the Antiochian Orthodox Archdiocese which looks at the rise of the nones in the American religious landscape. This special ministry involves the viewing of a film followed by small group discussion over a few weeks. It is designed for those who are “spiritual but not religious,” those who are atheist or agnostic, those who are may have fallen away from their faith—everyone. In order to establish this ministry in our own community, we must have specially trained moderators. Moderators can be ANYONE involved in the parish who is specifically NOT a priest. A moderator is NOT required to answer questions, only facilitate discussion. Our deanery is interested in hosting a moderator training workshop for the Becoming Truly Human ministry sometime in September. If you are interested, please speak with Fr. Nick. For more information on this ministry, please visit: https://www.becomingtrulyhuman.com.

Transfiguration Youth RetreatFollowing Divine Liturgy on Sunday, August 18, we will host a retreat for our youth. Following a lunch, we will head to Sceiford Fruit Farm in North East to pick some peaches and apples. We will then head back to the Church for a small talk on the Transfiguration. We will then serve the Festal Great Vespers for the Feast of the Transfiguration and bless the fruit that we just picked as is customary for the Feast of the Transfiguration.

Camp Nazareth ClassicOur diocesan parish of St. Michael’s Orthodox Church in Binghamton, NY is hosting the second annual Camp Nazareth Classic Golf Tournament to support the Camp Nazareth Science & Nature Camp. The golf tournament will be held on Saturday, September 7 at the Traditions Glen Resort in Johnson City, NY. If you are interested in golfing, please email Dr. Nicholas Seketa at [email protected] by August 17.

St. Nicholas Vegetable GardenOur parish just got approval from the owners of the small parcel of land right next to our parking lot to beautify the property and turn it into a vegetable garden for the benefit of our neighborhood. The first step in the process is to clear the area of brush and debris. We will be meeting on Saturday, September 7 at 9:00 AM to begin the process. Eventually, we will install raised beds which will be filled with all kinds of produce which will be sold to our neighbors at very reasonable prices. Come and join us in beautifying our neighborhood!

First Day of Church SchoolThe first day of the new church school year will be Sunday, September 8. Also on that Sunday, all students are asked to bring their backpacks to Liturgy so that Fr. Nick can bless them for the beginning of the school year.

Adult Classes ResumingOur adult spirituality classes will resume on Thursday evenings beginning at 6:00 PM September 5. We will be continuing our study of The Incarnate God by beginning volume 2 of this wonderful series on the feast days of the Church.

The first day of the Dormition fast, August 1/14, is also the feast of the Procession of the Venerable Wood of the Life-Creating Cross of the Lord. In the Greek Horologion of 1897 the derivation of this Feast is explained: “Because of the illnesses that occur in August, it was customary, in former times, to carry the Venerable Wood of the Cross through the streets and squares of Constantinople for the sanctification of the city, and for relief from sickness. On the eve (July 31), it was taken out of the imperial treasury, and laid upon the altar of the Great Church of Hagia Sophia. From this Feast until the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos,

they carried the Cross throughout the city in procession, offering it to the people to venerate.”

In the 1901 Typikon of Fr. Alexander Mikita, a guide to celebrating the services used in our Carpatho-Russian tradition, he explains that the Wood of the True Cross was taken from the imperial

palace and placed on the altar of the Hagia Sophia and was then used to

bless water. It is because of this ancient practice that water is blessed at the beginning of the Dormition Fast.

Our Most Holy Theotokos

“Let the little children come to me, and do not forbid them, for to such is the Kingdom of Heaven.” Mark 10:14

Sunday, August 11, 2019 Volume 7, Issue 32

The pieces left overThe pieces left overThe pieces left overThe pieces left over Have you ever read a book that reminds you of another one? Sometimes we hear a story and we remem-ber another one like it we’ve heard before.

Today the Gospel reading tells us the story of the feeding of the five thousand. Do you remember this one? Do you remember how our Lord talked to the people, and then He fed them with just five loaves of bread and two fish? With just a little bit of food, Jesus had enough food to feed 5,000 men, plus women and children!

AND did you know there was even food left over after that? The Gospel tells us that after they all ate and were filled, the disciples, “picked up the pieces left over—twelve wicker baskets full.” The word that we hear, “pieces” is “klasmata” in Greek. And, that is the same exact word we hear in another place. In our Church, we hear the word “klasmata,” or “pieces” in something that was written just a few years after the apostles lived. This was called the Didache, and it told the new Christians how to worship. When we hear the word “klasmata” there, it’s talking about the broken bread of Holy Communion!

So when we hear this wonderful miracle story of the feeding of the 5,000, we also think about the wonderful miracle we have every time we receive Holy Communion. The bread is the Body of Christ, and there is enough for everybody!
