7 Additional Income through Cauliflower Seed Production

Cauliflower is one of the major vegetables, which is grown intensively by farmers in East Khasi Hills. Due to quality & size, local variety of cauliflower is in high demand in the area. However, there was a steady decline in seed production of these locally available varieties, due to low temperature during the vegetative stage. About 10 members have formed a group for production of cauliflower seed through participatory approach. Being the group president, Smt. Skodora kharkrang had maintained & arranged all the activities for successful functioning of the group.

Training

• All the members were given training by the KVK officials followed by regular support by ATMA staff.

• All the members were guided by ATMA staff to follow the package of practices and group members were fully compliant with the seed production operations like rouging, maintenance of isolation distance, etc.

achievemenTS

• 4.6 kg of seed was produced with an average yield of 40 grams per plant at the rate of Rs. 200 per 10 grams of seed, resulting in net return of Rs.92, 000 to the members of the group.

• By contribution of Rs. 111/-, each group member was able to gain three fold of their investment in the first year itself, thereby giving them an alternate income generation source.

imporTance for farmerS

• The members of “LABEITLANG SHG” are also acting as resource persons for farmer-to-farmer technology dissemination.

Success Stories of Women Farmers

35Smt. Drakshayani Iranna Mathapati, village Mudakavi, district Belgaum, a successful women farmer having an orchard of 400 mango (Alfanso, Banganapalli varieties) plants and 150 Lemon plants. She maintains it organically by using bio-digester extract, vermiwash, vermicompost, Jeevamrut. Further, with bore well output of only two inches of water, trenches (20 feets length, 3 feet width and 3 feet depth) are dug between rows of mango and lemon for in situ conservation of runoff water and moisture during summer. Before the inception of the horticulture orchard, entire land was stony and unfit for cultivation of field or fruit crops. Land was ploughed to make it fine tilth and all stones were used for constructing bunds around farm to avoid stray animals. Then Horticulture plantation with mango, sapota, Lemon, and jamun was established.

Training• Smt. Drakshayani Iranna Mathapati participated in training programmes conducted by ATMA at various

training institutes viz.UAS, Dharwad, DATC, Arabhavi.

• She has taken suggestion from Swati pickle industry situated at Belur Industrial Area, Dharwad.

achievemenTS• She has given brand name for her pickles as “Shakti Pickles” which has high demand as it is prepared from the

fruits grown organically.

• Annually she is selling 50 tonnes of pickles on her own vehicle in surrounding blocks of Belgaum, Dharwad and Bagalakot districts and in the stalls promoted by krushi melas of various Agriculture and Horticulture universities.

imporTance for farmerS• The model she has developed is a paradigm for the women farming community who want to prove their

ability in the field of agriculture/horticulture and to overcome poverty with women empowerment.

• Thousands of farmers Statewide are visiting her farm through Shri Kshetra Dharmasthala Rural Development program (SKDRP) and adopting the proven practices on their own farms.

recogniTion• She was awarded with “Best Youth Women Farmer” by University of Agricultural sciences, Dharwad during the

year 2013-14.

36 Ornamental Bird Rearing

Introduction of Ornamental Bird Rearing by KVK Nimpith through farm women have contributed to the rural economy with a steady cash flow to sustain their livelihood and proved as alternative livelihood options for cyclone affected zone of Sundarbans. Women are being empowered by adopting the technology and they are able to meet up the basic needs of their family in absence of their husbands migrating elsewhere in search of livelihood. Normally, the womenfolk of Sundarbans depend mainly on prawn seed catching, a risky venture as most of the rivers are crocodile infested. Moreover, it does not provide enough support to sustain their regular needs.

Training • After training in the Krishi Vigyan Kendra, she decided to adopt Ornamental Bird Rearing technology with 10

pairs of birds. .

• She has managed to construct a house with net and some wooden structure to give them a shelter and prevent from predators.

• She was motivated for construction of scientific house of 20 pair’s with minimum input and technical support from the KVK.

achievemenTS • Ornamental bird rearing has changed her life both economically and morally with greater financial

sustainability and income assurance.

• Now, she earns a net profit of Rs. 2500/- per month with an investment of Rs.1700/- Initially.

impacT • KVK reviewed the marketing difficulties faced by her & other women in the village, KVK developed a doorstep-

marketing channel by which the women could sell out their products from their home itself.

• For the doorstep marketing, rural youth were also involved and by educating them about the scientific transport and proper care during transportation, they are earning good remuneration.

• After seeing the success of this model, KVK disseminated this technology through Smt. Tapasi Mistri to a large area of Damkal Village that now named as an Ornamental Bird Village, where nearly 82 numbers of farmwomen are rearing ornamental birds and fetching an amount to sustain their livelihood.

• All the farmwomen are now acting as inspiration to not only the other women folk of the same village but also motivate the farmwomen of the nearby blocks like Kultali, Mathurapur-I & Jaynagar-II of South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal.
