the elderly people, However, in fact, for with little
consideration of men's character, it brought out problemslike strong incongruity, and even lead to displeasure,
such as giddiness, headache, and nausea in some cases.
Especially the problem of the Family Computer-epilepsy
in the children absorbed in the fainily computer, the
influence of blink of a cathode-ray tube on the cranial
nerve system were paid attention keenly, It is urgent to
give the study about the reason of it, the way to
evaluation, and the way to solve it.
The problem of "Pocket

starting of research in a new domain about the influence
of the display technique of an image given to a central
neryous system. Broad discussion is given to the

medicine, media study, an apparatus developer, and the
broadcast persons, etc, Especially attention to the
technology of VR as a part of the human interface of the
next generation, since this audiovisual stimulus is not
what human beings have experienced until now, it is
necessary to verify the influence on the living body's
strictly. However, it is far from sufficient, especial as to
the facet of individual difference of vital response by VR.
So, in order to elucidate it, this research will for the first
time to give the consideration from the correlation
between menta1 scaling and audiovisual stimulus as a
focus.
2. Method
12 healthy male volunteers, aged from 23 to 44
years o]d (mean age ± S.D,: 30±7) were selected. Their
ayerage body weight was 63.5 ± 3.8 kg. They were
recruited for the present experiment after obtaining
informed consent from each of them. No high
performance athletes were included. The subjects had
normal sinus rhythms, and no subject was medicated
with psychoactive agents. The present study protocol was
approved by the Ethics Committee of ibhoku University
Graduate School ofMedicine.
A head-mounted display was used as the
three-dimensional image presentation device for Virtual
Reality and "Descent,"
a free software shooting game, was used as the software for the virtual three-dimensional
game. In the game, the game player flies in the
three-dimensional virtual space, striking down one
enemy one after another through moyement, The
movement of the head doesn't correspond with the
rotation ofthe view in the three-dimensiona] image.
Electronics were stuck onto the subjects' chests and
the electrocardiogram waveforrn was measured. The
subjects were seated and given 20 minutes for relax and
started the game using a personal computer in the same
time as 20 minutes. During the three-dirnensional gamewith virtua] reality, the oxygen metabolic change in the
anterior lobe of the brain was measured by the near
infrared oxygenation monitor (NIRO-300, Hamamatsu
Photonics),
@ Near infrared spectroscopy is based on the fact that
tissue is relatively transparent for light at wavelengths in
the region of 700 to 950 nm. The NIRO 300 is equipped
with two sensors, allowing measurement of tissue
oxygenation on two different sites. Each sensor consists
of an emitter with four laser diodes operating at 775, 81O,
847 and 919 nm and a detector with three photodiodes
that are mounted parallel at increasing distances to the
emitter. This allows calculation of the slope of
attenuation. Pre-suming that this slope is proponional to
absorption scattering it is possible to express tissue
exygenation as an absolute value. We expressed it as the
tissue oxygenation index in per cent, in which tissue
oxygenation index (TOI) - [Hb02] / ({Hb02] +[hHb]) x
10o%.1-4
All the measured data were within the norrnal range,
and no fatal arrhythmia or epilepsy has been found
during the experiment. And satisfactory measurement
results were obtained by the experiment. The time
series data were recorded in the digital data recorder,
After the experiments, recorded data were inputted into
the personal computer systern through the AD converter.
Quantified evaluation and statistical handling were
perforrned in the personal computer system.
The mental scaling tendencies of objects were
assessed by "T},pe
A tendency distinction table" with an
abbreviated set of 12 questions. Responses to the
three-dimensional shooting game were compared with
the menta]ity tendency by the quantified value ofscaling.
Analysismethods
Time series data mentioned above were recorded on
the digital data recorder (TECA RD-145T DiNI'), The
recorded data were inputted into the computer system in
the accuracy of 111000sec through the AD cenverter
(PowerLab!16SP). From 20-minute data of control and
game, 5-minute data were chose while the
electrocardiogram was stable, There was no duplication
ponion of these two data. And the data were analyzed by
using MMLAB program.

Friedman and Rosenman in 1959, which has character
and behavior characteristic to easily to get to coronary
artery disease like myocardial infarction or anginaS-6.
Now it is understood that it might be relate to all stress
related diseases not only the coronary artery disease7'ii.
The character and behavior characteristic oftype A:
(1) Strong will to attain one's purpose
(2) Strong competitive spirit and easy to show
hostility
(3) Always desire the high evaluation from the
circumference and high promotion
(4) Devoted to many work and is always pressed
with time
(5) Always speed up mental and physical activity
(6) Remarkably over sensitive in mental and physical Friedman and Rosenman ca]led these characters
type A collectively, and the opposite characters are called
type B, As for the present condition, rnuch research has
been done about the relevance between type A and the
development and prognosis of all stress related diseases
from the facet of psychosornatic medicine. In the latest
report, it is suggest that there is relevance between type A
and digestive ulcer7'ii.
ln Japan, the concept of type A tends to be applied
to the C`workaholic
men", As a cultural social character of
Japan, many people think it is hard to refuse. It is
especially remarkable in a work relation, It is differ
clearly from the men of type A in the United States.
The type A in the American are just for self (which based
on individualism), while those in Japan are just for
maintaining collective harmony (which based on groupattribution nature). Therefore, even it can be said that the
type A have responsibility and an obligation to the work
in both of the two countries, there is a huge different in
the foundation. 7
Type A tendency distinction
In erder to judge type A tendency, "IYpe

9 (Are you punctua] with everything?), the points were
doubled, so the sum total mark as 3O-point full marks.
Thus, the existence of type A was judged by the
computed sum total mark, When the total score was 17
points or more than it, it was defined as type A; and when
the total score was less then 16 points, it was defined as
type B.
Statistics methods
With statistics method called [ILtest, the variability
of heart rate (HR) and tissue oxygenation index (TOI)within different conditions (control and game) or
different character (type A and type B) were evatuated,
and be judged as significant difference at P<O.05.
By the statistics method, correlations between vital
responses to 3-dimensional VR shooting game stimulus
and the mental scaling scores ofobjects were calculated,
and bejudged as significant difference at P<O.05,
3. Results
12 objects of this experiment were divided into two
groups by "fype
A tendency distinction table": type A
behavior pattern (type A) group with 6 men and type B
behavior pattern (type B) group with 6 men.
The raw data of heart rate (HR) and tissue
oxygenation index (TOI) were obtained during the
experiments. Examples of the time series data of a
volunteer, who showed a type A behavior pattern, is
presented in Fig.1 (HR) and Fig2 (TOI), Examples of the
time series data of a volunteer, who showed a type B
behavior pattern, is presented in Fig,3 (HR) and Fig.4
(TOI), And the figure in left side showed the variability
of each parameter in control condition; and the figure in
right side showed the variability in game condition.

4. Discussion
It is estimated that over ten million people watched
the Pocket Monster television program in 1997, Among
these watchers, over 700 children were taken to hospital
by ambulance with severe sickness. It is possible that
347
foot - the
government It is also
possible that the occurrence rate of children, who felt
nauseous during the pocket monster program, was not so
large, Though the percentage may not have been so high,
severe convulsions were reported in some patients; thus, the problem was regarded as serious.
The problern of the "Pockemon
Monster7', starts
social conscious ofthe advancement ofthe image display
technique could make a bad infiuence to human being.
Unti] now, many researches have been studied about the
influence of autonomic nervous activity by various
extemal stimuli to vision, hearing, tactile senses and
mental ]oad. Especially for vision stimulus contains most
and complicated factors, rnany studies have been done
about it by various methods. Moreover, in recent years,
researches on the new vision stimulus using imageteclmologM such as a 3-dimensional image are in boom.
From the results of these, it can be confirmed that
audioyisual stimulus affects autonomic nervous activity,
and results in changing the index of circulatory system
reflecting the activityi3, However, the present condition
is that there is alrnost no paper investigating the influence
on the living body by various audiovisual stimuli from
the point of an individual difTerence.
For the first time, this study, which gives a new
approach from the correlation between the vital
responses to audiovisual stimulus and the charaeter
tendency, shows that vita1 responses real have some
relation to character tendency. It is expected that using
such a mental scaling tendency table, the patient who
have tendency of morbid reaction by audiovisual
stimulus can be protected beforehand.
wnen establishing the guideline for judgment ofthedanger ofan audiovisual instrument, human's character is
a very important factor needs to take into consideration.
In this research, the teclmique ofmental scaling was
newly introduced, For mental scaling, the type A
behavior pattern and the hostility scaling were used,
Vlarious experts have reported on the relevance of a typeA behavior pattern. In some cases, the brain oxygen
metabolism may completely differ for the object of Type
A and Type B behavior patterns. On the whole,

correlation did not become significant in type A scaling.
There is ngument regarding the re]ation of the type Abehayior pattern among Japanese people, A social
support quantity is a scale in which an opposite direction
is shown,
These results suggest that the autonomic function in
the three-dimensional game by the virtual reality was
connected to the mental tendency of the objects. By
examining such directivity, it is expected that subjects
that show the morbid reaction to an audiovisual
stimulation can be screened beforehand.
After establishing standard guidelines for
audiovisual content risks, mental scaling of an object
may become an important factor in the future,
5. Conclusion
The results of this experiment suggest that vital
responses to audiovisual stimulus are differing from the
character tendency of human being. When establishing
the guideline fbr judgment of audiovisual dangeg
character tendency as one ofvery important factor cannot
be denied.
