Dear Parents,
Welcome back to the start of a new academic year.
I hope that you all enjoyed the summer. We were
very lucky to have had such good weather for a
change!
We have seen a lot of new faces this year with new
children, new staff and the arrival of Winston, our
school dog. Everyone has seemed to settle in really
well and we are looking forward to this year with
lots of exciting things planned.
I look forward to meeting you all as the new term
continues.
Best wishes,
Sue Marsh

Parking reminder:
I just wanted to remind parents about the
importance of parents parking safely and
considerately at the start and end of the school
day. It is always very busy during these times of
the day and already I have witnessed cars parking
on the zig zag lines or on double yellow lines. The
children's safety is of paramount importance and I
would therefore ask that you remember that not
only does it jeopardise the children's safety but it is
also illegal. I would also ask that you do not park
across neighbour’s driveways as it is inconsiderate
and does not promote wellbeing in the school
community.

Winston’s First week at Beechwood!
On Monday, 5th September
another member of staff
joined the Beechwood
team: Winston the school
dog!
He’s a four month old
Cockapoo puppy and is
settling in well to his new life and role.
Winston has met many of the children and is
slowly getting used to all the different smells and
sounds within the school. The children are all very
excited that he’s here and can’t wait to be able to
walk him, play with him and learn more about
having a dog.
Winston will be writing
his very own blog so look
out soon on the
Beechwood Junior School
website.

Stubbington Residential July 2016
S tubbington residential was a great adventure for the children in Years 3 and 4.
We lived in the new dorms which were spacious and organised. We got to do a
number of fun and interesting activities including setting up small mammal
hotels, collecting different shells from the beach and exploring the ponds and grounds
too! We also got to go to the hide late at night where we saw a family of hungry foxes
and even some very cautious badgers in the distance. We enjoyed working in teams to
complete an earthquake obstacle course as well. We loved our time at the tuck shop in
the afternoons and particularly loved the stubbington biscuits at tea time. Everyone
had such an amazing time!

Beechwood’s New Playground
Beechwood has a new playground!
Over the summer holidays Beechwood has
been lucky enough to secure lottery funding
which has allowed the playground to be
transformed into an exciting 75 metre
running track. There are various other
options including long jump, circuit training
and stretching stations, ladders, a short
sprint track, markers for catching and
throwing, as well as phonetics and compass
points for additional learning opportunities.
A big thank you to the team at UniPlay who
carried out the work creating a colourful and
creative space in which the staff and children
can use to enhance playtimes and lessons.
Further opportunities will be announced
throughout the year which will offer children
the chance to use the new design to get fitter
and have even more fun!

Water Bottles
Please feel free to ask your child to bring home
their water bottles on a daily or weekly basis. We do
try our hardest to ensure all water bottles are
regularly cleaned but are more than happy if you would
like your child to bring their water bottle home more
regularly. Please remember to send it in the next day
though as we are not able to supply another bottle for them.
Library Code For Students

What is Pokémon GO?
Pokémon GO is the latest app to take the world by storm, quickly becoming a firm
favourite within the UK. Despite its obvious appeal, parents need to be careful and
ensure that they and their children are aware of the dangers, so that they can enjoy
the game safely.
In its most basic form, Pokémon GO is a game built around the capturing, training
and evolving of creatures called Pokémon. It is one of the first games to become
popular that uses ‘augmented reality’, a blend of real life and an online world. The
game makes use of your phone’s GPS and camera to make Pokémon appear in
real life locations nearby.
The game has many positives, such as encouraging players to work together with
their friends to explore the world and capture as many Pokémon as possible. But
what makes the game so appealing also makes the game a danger.
What are the dangers?
The game encourages players to meet face-to-face with people that they may not
have previously met. This is an obvious danger as you never know who your child
might meet. Equally worrying, the game encourages you to travel far and wide in
order to find Pokémon, but this has already caused people to be drawn to places
that aren’t safe for children.
Despite the game being free, the in-app purchases can be very expensive. Certain
in-game incentives can cost up to £79.99, so it’s crucial to for parents to ensure
that the app is set up without access to payment options.
The accessing of personal data is a relatively new danger for parents to be aware
of and one that Pokémon GO certainly uses. To make an account, players are re-
quired to use their birth date and email address. This can be entered manually or
automatically accessed from a child’s Google account, so it’s essential for parents
to stay vigilant. Parents have the right to contact the creators to prevent them from
using their child’s personal information.

What is Pokémon GO? Continued...
How to keep your child safe
Whilst some of these dangers may feel overwhelming, there are a few easy steps
parents can take to help keep their child safe and allow them to enjoy the game.
Simply exploring the game together can help keep your child safe, though this may
only be applicable for younger children. If older children want to play alone, it is
crucial to make them aware of the dangers and advise them on how to stay safe.
It’s important to set ground rules with your children so they understand what is dan-
gerous and know what they can’t do. This can include telling them not to speak to
strangers as well as staying within a set area so they don’t go out too far. Having
your child take a battery pack with them is another good piece of advice. The app
can be quite draining so it’s crucial that their phone doesn’t run out of power whilst
they are out.
Pokémon GO is a fantastic new app that is encouraging children to put down their
games consoles in favour of getting fresh air and exploring the outside world.
Whilst you should encourage your child to partake and socialise with their friends,
it’s essential that they do so in a safe way.
