Dear Parents,
It is certainly a pleasure to have the lighter
mornings and evenings and for some sunshine
to have arrived. We have a bird nesting in the
bird box just outside reception and she has laid
a number of eggs. The children are waiting for
the chicks to hatch so next time you are at
reception take a look on the TV screen.
We are just coming to the end of the Key Stage
2 tests so a big well done to the Year 6 children
for all of their hard work. There are plenty of
exciting things for them planned not least the
World War II Tea Dance and Evacuation
sleepover.
Just a reminder that our website is updated
regularly with letters and news. Also, what the
children have been getting up to in the Blog
pages.
Best wishes,
Mrs. Marsh

Year 6 Visit an WWII Anderson Shelter
O n Thursday 14th April, Year 6
went to Mrs Price's
neighbour to see an original
Anderson shelter in her garden (with
their permission obviously) to help
us with our WW2 topic.
Mrs Price, who is our HLTA, has a
neighbour who discovered this
fascinating artefact when they
wanted an earth mound levelled off
in order to build a garden shed.
Luckily for Year 6, it was brilliantly
preserved and was only just around
the corner from school.
A Year 6 pupil said, "It was very
small but interesting. It was great
seeing something straight from
WW2!"
The pupils of Year 6 had a brilliant
time and will have more fun learning
about the Second World War this
half term. By Jacob

A warm sunny day saw
Beechwood v Harfield
compete in the tennis
tournament that took place
at Harfield Primary School at
the beginning of term. This
followed on from a
coaching session that the
children had participated in
with tennis coach Miss
Lindfield from Southampton
Sports Centre.
The children enjoyed trying
out a variety of tennis type
activities, including
dodging, aiming and
striking and taking it in
turns to play ‘centre court’
matches against each
other.
There were some good
rally’s with players thinking
how best to win a point for their team.
Well done to Beechwood’s
Year 3T class who won
against Harfield’s Year 3’s, 37
points to 24, and also to 3R
who won 48 points to 3G’s
39 in the Year 3 class v class
competition which took place
here at Beechwood.

Year 3, 4, 5 & 6 Football Tournament
Beechwood Children took part in a lower and an upper school football tournament over two afternoons of sunshine. All the children were invit-ed to take part. The rules were kept to a minimum to allow for maxi-mum play. The eventual Year group winners were Year 4I Team A, with Year 3G playing them in the Year v Year game.
In the upper school, the 6 minute games were very competitive with the final year group winners being 5L Team B (against 5B Team D) and 6T team D winning against 6T team A) with the overall winners (Y5 v Y6) winning by just 1 goal; 2:1, it was 6T Team D.
The children showed lots of support and encouragement for their classes as well as quick skills.

BROOK PRE-SCHOOL
Lately there have been children from Brook, Glenfield and Beechwood
playing with Brook equipment. This has been especially worse in the
mornings. Brook staff spend a lot of time setting up the outside as a learning
environment in the morning for the sessions ahead. Brook open both the
entrance gate and the playground gate for parents to gain access.
However, they have been experiencing lots of children, not just siblings of
children at Brook, using their playground as a route into Beechwood and
opening their storage boxes and taking toys and equipment out to play with.
It appears that the majority of children appear to be Beechwood's or
Glenfield's with no siblings at Brook. The latest was children kicking balls
onto their roof. They have tried to ask parents not to allow their children to
do this but some parents have not been helpful. Children are also climbing
on equipment and the railings which is a health and safety issue that could
potentially damage the equipment or cause injury to themselves.
Unfortunately, if the situation does not improve, the gates between the
playgrounds will have to be kept locked and entry to Brook will happen at
the last minute.
I am sure you would like to support us in ensuring the situation improves.
Thank you.

Titanic Tea Dance
Year 4 had a very busy first week back preparing for
our Titanic tea party. The children worked extremely
hard to get themselves ready and transform the hall in
time for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd class passengers to enjoy!
The children spent time designing and creating menus
for first, second and third class passengers and made
all of the food that was served! They also practised
their dancing skills and performed to music that would
have played on the Titanic. Not only this, but the
children also learnt how to fold napkins and thought
carefully how they would show first class as superior to
the other classes on board.
Among table decorations, food preparations, learning a
new style of dance and menu writing, the children
were also given a specific role during the tea party -
either a crew member for 1st,2nd or 3rd class or as a
passenger.
The children threw themselves into their role and
practised their acting skills as well as their speaking
and listening skills throughout the week to prepare
them for the big event. The Year 4 team are extremely
proud of the children and were impressed with their
dedication to their learning and thoroughly enjoyed
working together to put on such an event. Year 4
would like to thank all parents and guardians for being
so supportive and providing costumes and attending
one of the biggest events in Year 4 so far!

O n the 28th April, 5B had their class
assembly and as the children had
been writing Newspaper reports,
they chose to deliver their assembly in
role as news reporters.
Following the story of Boudicca and her tribe of cut-throat Celts, 5B reported on the
famous events of the Celtic Queen, right up until
her tragic, yet incredibly brave, death.
The children took charge of writing their
own sections of the script and chose
their own parts for their assembly. They
even decided to share the fantastic
Science work they have been doing with
Gravity.
They thoroughly enjoyed the creative
process, and hope their parents and the
rest of the school enjoyed hearing about
what they have been learning so far this
term.

Y ear 5 have been learning
how to tie dye material in
Art, using different
techniques: the Sunburst, Spiral
and Bull's Eye.
They were able to choose their
own design, and then soak their
fabric for 30 minutes. Once it was
rinsed and dry, they learnt how to
print using card and the primary
colours to create their own
secondary colours. Using the card,
they learned different printing
techniques which they then used to
add a Celtic border and design to
their tie dyed material.
Luckily, the weather was on their
side and they were able to hang
their beautiful creations around
the playground to dry in time - well
done Year 5!
