ISO & ISO 14001

• ISO stands for International Organization for Standardization of

ISO member bodies across the world.

• ISO 14001 was developed to provide a

management system to help organisations to

OBJECTIVES OF ISO 14001• An environmental objective is a specific environmental goal.

• Your organization’s environmental objectives depends upon two factors environmental impact and environmental aspects caused by the business activities.

•Eg :- ASPECT:- Shifting of fully grown trees due to building expansion activity.

IMPACT: Tree population is maintained and all benefits of trees are sustained.

ENVIRONMENTAL TARGET

• An environmental target is a detailed performance requirement.

• Environmental targets are derived fromenvironmental objectives and are used to achieve these objectives.

• Targets can apply to specific areas or to the organization as a whole

Policy Principle No.3

Striving to operate in a manner designed to minimise and where possible eliminate releases to air, land and water during manufacturing by focussing on safe technologies, company standards and operating practices.

Objective

1.Minimise process emissions to atmosphere2.Minimise risk of ground and ground water contamination3.Control releases to surface water and sewer to prevent pollution4.Minimise solid and hazardous waste requiring treatment or disposal

ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

• An Environmental Management System (EMS) is a framework that helps a company achieve its environmental goals through consistent control of its operations.

• Basic Elements of an EMS:† Reviewing the company's environmental goals

† Analysing its environmental impacts and legal requirements

† Setting environmental objectives and targets to reduce environmental impacts and comply with legal requirements

† Establishing programs to meet these objectives and targets

† Monitoring and measuring progress in achieving the objectives

† Ensuring employees' environmental awareness and competence

† Reviewing progress of the EMS and making improvements

ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY

• An environmental policy statement expresses a commitment to the implementation and maintenance of an organization’s environmental management

system and the improvement of its overall environmental performance.

• An environmental policy should also emphasize the need to prevent pollution and to comply with

all relevant legal and other requirements. • In general, an environmental policy should be used to generate environmental objectives and targets, and should act as a general framework for action.

EMS AUDIT

• Systematically and documented verification process to determine whether an organization’s EMS conform to the EMS criteria set by the organization and communication of the results of this process to management.

• In India Supreme Audit Institution (SAI) headed by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG).Audit conducted by CAG is broadly classified into Financial, Compliance and Performance Audit. Environmental audit by SAI India is conducted within the broad framework of Compliance and Performance Audit.
