EE400 and EE401

Compressor Monitoring Unit

Disclaimer

Capstone Design is very important for program accreditation

As a result, the program changes from year-to-year

What you see and hear here should be mostly right, but is not guaranteed

Changes are derived in the summer months

EE Capstone Design

Capstone Design Format

EE 400, Fall term, emphasizes paper-based design and project planning

EE 401, Winter term, emphasizes execution of the project plan

Students work in groups, the size of which depends upon the project; historically there have been 4 students in a group

The project must require substantial design and have a definable goal

The project must involve Electrical Engineering, be carried out safely, and be ethically-sound

EE Capstone Design

8-month design-build cycle

In EE400 (Fall): Project Selection (Adoption, Lottery)

Define Project Scope

Develop Requirements Specifications

Develop Paper-Based Design

Critical Design Review/Presentation

In EE401 (Winter): Bread-board Prototyping

PCB Design and Prototyping

Final Design Paper

Demonstration and Presentation with Poster Session

Department Mandate: Clients

The Department would like to see all projects be developed with academic researchers at the institution

…this is evolving and is expected to be fully implemented next academic year

EE Capstone Design

industrial- or R&D-like projects

increased motivation

goal-oriented client provides direction

useful product and effort

develops professional soft skills

resources beyond what is offered by a traditional course framework can be made available

Why Project Clients?

You have a quite a bit of control over what project you pursue

It is wise to pick something that interests you – something that keeps you engaged!

Suggestions, considering the Department mandate: 1. Determine what area of Electrical Engineering you would like

to work in; 2. Talk with the professors that you would like to work with

from this area many will be open to your suggestions; or will have ideas themselves

Having an arrangement to pursue a project before the courses start is good!

For those without projects, a lottery to assign pre-arranged projects typically occurs

Your Project

Forming a group is almost as important as choosing a project

Except in extenuating circumstances, group selection is typically left to you

There is a correlation between project scope and group size: the bigger the group, the bigger the expected project

Suggestions: 1. Form your group based upon skill set rather than

friendship

2. Be prepared to compromise on group formation in order to pursue projects that require a specific number of people
