The new NAHS, a classic example of adaptive re-use, “the first of its kind in Atlanta”, sits on a 56-acre ruggedly wooded campus with two instructional buildings (one 12-stories) that include state-of-the-art competition gymnasium, black box theatre, 600-seat traditional theatre with orchestra pit and catwalk, and an 8-car elevator system. The campus houses three practice fields, three tennis courts, and a four-story parking garage. Students are offered a rigorous academic program organized by grade-level academies, and four career paths. NAHS’s IB program is the oldest in the Southeast, and offers AP courses. With a graduation rate of 80% (2012-2013 school year), it has one of the best graduation rates among urban, Title I high schools in the nation. Its well-rounded academic program includes foreign languages, visual and performing arts, and extracurricular clubs and activities to help prepare students for the world that awaits them.

For years, Buckhead’s leadership has recognized the growing need for replacements from the younger generation. Before our Buckhead Coalition

was formed, the Buckhead Business Association started just such a group (called YoungBucks, by my son Steve). More recently, the Coalition started an organization of new leaders nominated by Neighborhood Associations. Named the Diplomatic Leadership Corps, it consists of twenty-five men and women around the age of twenty-five (to commemorate the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Coalition).

Imagine our excitement when David Cummings developed Atlanta Tech Village as an incubator for young tech start-ups. Add to this the wisdom of thirty-seven different developers announcing fifty-one apartment complexes with 15,937 units to meet the desire for mobility by the estimated population expansion with 38% made up by Millennials.

Young leadership is what’s “trending” in Buckhead for 2017!

- - by Sam Massell (age 89) President of the Buckhead Coalition and former Atlanta Mayor
