Along with some talented Erina HS students (and two former Chertsey students in Veronica and Kathryn), the performers were able to bring alive our special Education Week assembly. Once again our own dance group and school choir did us proud. Thank you to Miss Wiseman, Mrs Hynes and Mrs Blumer who continue to provide our students with such fantastic opportunities in the areas of choir and dance. Thank you to Miss Sewell for once again putting together a great program of events for Education Week, 2012. I appreciate the work that our teacher/librarian, Mr Twyman has done to once again coordinate a very successful Book Fair. In total $500 was raised to add resources to our library. Thank you to families and staff who donated books. In total, 75 books were donated! It is satisfying to know that these books will benefit our students for many years to come. Mr Twyman would like to thank his helpers who provided great support at the Book Fair. Thank you to Louise Nichols, Julie Cross, Linda Gormly, Joy Davies, Dianne Twyman. NEW SAFER PATHWAY ENTRY APPROVED I was very pleased to receive the news that Chertsey has been successful in obtaining a grant of $30 000 to construct a pedestrian pathway and install a new gate and railings into the school from Willow Road up to and past Chertseydale Cottage. At present you might have noticed parents with prams and toddlers having to enter the school via the driveway entrance. This has caused me great concern and it’s great to know that parents will soon have a safer option. It’s also good to know that it will be constructed to disability’s standards and so be suitable for wheelchair access. I would like to sincerely thank Mrs Denning for her persistence in applying for grants to enable this project to eventuate. ACKNOWLEDGEMENT FROM THE HEART FOUNDATION In the office foyer we now have a prestigious bronze plaque on display. This was presented to Kate Currie, a long-time School Learning Support Officer, who accepted this on behalf of our school for over 5 years of participation in the Jump Rope for Heart program. The letter accompanying this award stated, “…we want to thank schools like yours. Your contributions go a long way to help keep Australian hearts healthy”. Well done Kate and all of our families for supporting this most worthy program.

EDUCATION WEEK CELEBRATIONS

As is clearly evident from the photographs in this edition of the newsletter our Chertsey school community can be very proud of our students who performed last Thursday for our Education Week Open Day. Along with some talented Erina HS students (and two former Chertsey students in Veronica and Kathryn), the performers were able to bring alive our special Education Week assembly. THIS WEEK’S CLASSY ARTICLE What great work class 2S has been doing! This was evident in the last newsletter when they featured in our ‘Classy Article’ section of the school newsletter. I am sure we all enjoyed seeing the very creative work they have been doing, utilising technology to transform their individual portrait photographs. They also were a highlight of our static display at Erina Fair for our Education Week promotion. Keep up the great work 2S! And thank you to Miss Sewell for organising the work into the published format. This week’s student work has been contributed by class K-6D. Well done class K-6D. I am sure all readers of our school newsletter will enjoy your work.

PORTRAIT FUNDRAISER (Repeat) If you have been considering a family portrait I urge you to consider the P&C Fundraiser which is coming up THIS Saturday August 11 at Chertseydale Cottage with local photographer and Chertsey parent, Gary Champion. Please see the flyer in this newsletter for more information. I saw some of the portraits from a similar fundraiser last year and can highly recommend the quality of Gary’s work. And whilst having a lifetime memory captured it is good to know that you are supporting our P&C which in turn supports your children. SUNSAFE and PROUD HAT DRAW This week our Sunsafe and Proud Hat draw winner is Miles of 1S. He wins a slushy from the school canteen. I thank Mrs Dyer and our P&C for supporting this student welfare program. Please ensure your child has a school hat with their name marked clearly on the inside to be eligible to win the slushy . I am extremely proud of how smart the students look in FULL school uniform. Let’s keep it up! John Anderson

Hey Parents, Our school cares about your child’s health and nutrition! Did you know that our school is a member of Healthy Kids Association? That’s right, we want to provide good food and nutrition education to your children and Healthy Kids provides us with resources for the canteen and teachers. This is just one of the ways that we ensure your children learn about healthy food and eat well from the canteen. Healthy Kids Association also provides a free parent e‐newsletter with important nutrition information and great recipes that can help you stay on top of what is going on in the world of nutrition. To sign up, simply visit www.healthy‐kids.com.au.

ATHLETICS CARNIVAL RIBBONS Thanks to some lovely weather over the past week, we have nearly finished our field events! All athletics and field event ribbons will be handed out at Week 8’s K-6 Assembly. The Brisbane Water PSSA District Athletics Carnival will be held Thursday and Friday of Week 6 (23rd & 24th August) at Mingara Athletics Centre. Successful zone representatives should have received a green information and permission note about this today. A reminder that transport to and from the venue is by private arrangement. Please ensure all notes are returned to me (not class teachers) as soon as possible. Miss Wiseman (Carnival Co-ordinator) STAGE 3 “ACTIVE EDUCATION” PD/H/PE EXCURSION The major excursion for Stage 3 students is organised for Week 10 of this term (Wednesday 19th to Friday 21st September). This sport and recreation camp is run by “Active Education” at their Gosford Centre, Somersby. The cost for this three day/two night excursion is $250 per student. Student assistance is available to those families experiencing financial hardship. Just a reminder that the $50 final payment is due by next Friday 17th August (Term 3, Week 5). ***ALL PAYMENTS FOR THIS EXCURSION MUST BE FINALISED BY THE END OF WEEK 5*** Stage 3 Teachers

TRIVIA NIGHT (repeat)

Book your table Our Trivia Night committee is currently organising the P&C’s major fundraiser for 2012, which will be held in the evening of Friday 19th October in the school hall. The cost is just $10.00 per person (8-10 people per table), so get some friends together and put on your thinking caps for an awesome night. With Troy Henderson and Ross Nicol as your hosts there promises to be a great deal of fun and laughs. The theme will be “Music Across the Ages.” There will also be lots of prizes to be won, including “Best costume” and “Best Table” and don’t forget to bring lots of gold coins for mini games! BYO beverages, nibbles and brains trust! Donations for our prize pool will be gratefully accepted. Please contact Sarah Tomlinson if you can help with donations or if you require tickets the school office ( available week 2 in August).
