EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

US, as per the National Center for Educational Statistics, had 98,817 public

schools, 33,366 private schools, and 6,742 higher education institutions, as

of 2010. These institutions have more than 82 million students, who are

enrolled across various grades.

With a major part of US education being public, the government is

expected to spend US$165.36 billion on education and training in 2014,

which will form 3.2% of the total government spending for the year. With

98% of the US schools having internet and 17.6% of the population using

internet at schools, many educational institutions are embracing

technology, and companies are investing in the educational technology

space.

The US education space is witnessing several technological trends, such as

increased use of massive open online courses (MOOCs), flipped

classrooms, and gamification in learning. The education sector is also

witnessing influx of many new technology companies, as well as activity in

deal space.

The government is also taking adequate measures to promote technology–

enabled learning. President Barack Obama, in June 2013, has called on the

Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to improve the federal E-Rate

program — which subsidizes broadband and wireless connections in

schools and libraries across the US. With more than 99% of US schools

expected to have high–speed broadband and wireless Internet by 2018,

the demand for technology–based education in the US is expected to

increase further.
