WASH in Schools - Promoting good hygiene.WASH in Schools – provides safe drinking water, Separate gender appropriate latrines and hand washing facilities that improve sanitation and promotes lifelong health. This enhances the well-being of children and paves the way for new generations of healthy children.

On a warm day in mid of December 2019, READO Education team visited Dulmi-diid IDP School in Baioda Bay Region. I began asking the students about hand washing with soap, and they seemed to have a good understanding of the benefits of washing their hands. After ending our classroom visit and walking to the hand-washing facility, Nuuriyo Abdullahi Adan age 13 proudly came out from latrine and washed her hands with soap. The 13 years old class 3 said “ Our Head teacher make part of school rules and regulations to wash our hands after latrine visit.

WASH in Schools significantly reduces hygiene- related disease, increases students’ attendance and learning achievements, and contributes to dignity and gender equality. There was no way girls could drink water in school, they used to bring water in plastic bottles from home and wait untill class ends to go back home to use the toilet. One might think rebuilding school toilets or water taps is a minor job with a minor impact, but believe me it’s important and does contribute greatly to increasing girls’ school attendance. Sustainable programs like construction of latrines, hand washing and providing water to schools enhance children’s capacities to learn and achieve. We have now established water, hygiene and sanitation Club for our children to take responsibility for their environment.
