Healthy Aging and Retirement Literacy. A framework to enhance opportunities for more dynamic
and successful aging for African Americans who are disproportionately subject to systems, that
relegate them to disparities in health, education, economics and environmental conditions that can
impinge on the quality of life, is being designed. The framework draws on Freire’s emancipatory
literacy pedagogy for knowledge and successful living, an ecological systems perspective and with
the application of the SAMSHA’s wellness initiative.
Global Aging: Healthy Aging Among African-American and Ethiopian Elders in Rural and Urban
Settings. This cross cultural study identifies disparities and similarities in regard to healthy aging and
11
health promotion activities among elders in the U.S. and Ethiopia and explores the implications to
health promotion policy and programming.
