Impressionist Techniques

• Impasto method: thick paint application where brushstrokes are visible

• Little mixing paint on the canvas – colors appear more vivid

• Upper layers of paint are added while the lower layers are still wet – creates softer edges

• The surface is usually opaque – no glazing used.

• Focus on the effects of light on objects and the reflection of objects on others in the scene

• Study of effets de soir—the shadows of objects in the evening or twilight
