Exciting things are happening at Foundation Medical Staffing these days! Beginning in January, 2008, Foundation will provide locum tenens and permanent placement to nephrologists, nephrology nurse practitioners and nephrology physician assistants. We are very excited about this new service offering and will be working with nephrologists under the new name of Foundation Physician Staffing. Check out our new website dedicated to nephrologists at www.foundationphysician.com. We will continue to use the name Foundation Medical Staffing for nurse practitioners and nephrology physician assistants. Our goal in offering this new service is for Foundation to incorporate “everything nephrology” into our business offerings. We’re excited to be able to offer “total nephrology services” to our clients and to provide more opportunities for our candidates. Our current travelers may wonder what impact this new endeavor will have on them. It means that we are broadening our horizons and that means potentially more outstanding opportunities for our travelers, whether they are nurses or nephrologists. As always, we will continue to provide the level of service that our current travelers have come to expect from Foundation. Foundation Gives Back This Holiday Season As we enter this holiday season, we ask the question, “How do we give thanks?” At Foundation, members of our staff give thanks in many different ways. We are thankful for the hard work that you provide, your dedication to Foundation and for the way you represent our company while you are in the field. One of my favorite things about the holiday season is giving. For four years now, Foundation has used the holiday season as a time to give to those who are in need. This year is no different. We will be sponsoring five families for Thanksgiving and Christmas. We know that nothing is more important than family and here at Foundation we are truly one big family. Every year the staff of Foundation is asked to give, and every year they go above and beyond to provide needy families with a wonderful holiday. I have been astonished, encouraged and challenged by the generosity of the men and women here at Foundation. Rozalyn ClaybornRozalyn has been part of the Foundation family since June 2006 and we’ve loved her from the start! She is an agent who has a great amount of experience and a great rapport with her nurses.

She says her favorite part about her job is the daily interactions she has with the great people she works with at Foundation and her travel nurses. Rozalyn also enjoys the learning experiences that she encounters every day in her position. She says, “Knowledge is a powerful thing and what I learn everyday is awesome!”

Working at Foundation, Rozalyn has had many interesting and enjoyable experiences. One of her most profound memories happened after she had placed a nurse on assignment. The nurse took the time to call Rozalyn and said, “I wanted to thank you for thinking of me, you do not know how this job is helping me and my family.”

Rozalyn’s nurses aren’t the only ones who think she does an excellent job. Each month she has a one-on-one with her manager and he consistently tells her he appreciates what she does. So do we, Rozalyn!

Megan LanceThe word at Foundation is that housing coordinator, Megan Lance, is a joy to work with. And she is an excellent addition to the team. Bryan Smith says, “We have very high standards for housing in the rehab travel department and Megan always comes through in the clutch.” She understands that Foundation’s travelers come first and works hard to find the best possible housing situation.

Megan likes being a part of Foundation as much as we like having her here. She says, “It’s amazing to be able to learn so much from your job!” Every day is a new experience for Megan, especially when working with furniture and utility companies.

She had a funny experience when dealing with an electricity company. A traveler’s electricity got cut off and about a month later her water got turned off. Megan called the apartment complex to find out what happened and the manager said, “Some random lady keeps calling and shutting it off!” That’s the best excuse she has ever received.

Megan’s dedication does not go unnoticed—by her co-workers or the travelers. She even received a card from a traveler thanking her for finding such a great apartment. Outside of work, Megan is just as dedicated. She is committed to spending as much time as she possibly can with her son.

Putting Faces with the Voices

Many nurses decide to travel in order to broaden their personal and professional horizons. Part of expanding your experience is taking assignments in a wide variety of locations and practice settings.

You can increase the odds of being accepted for appealing matches by making yourself more marketable—that is, more desirable as a candidate. The following suggestions should prove helpful in this regard.

Be flexible with scheduling.Flexibility is a key attribute of a successful travel nurse Obviously, personal availability for coverage depends on a number of factors including other professional commitments and lifestyle considerations. However, willingness to accept short-term, long-term and "as-needed" opportunities opens the door to more diverse opportunities.

Also, you will be regarded as more marketable if you are willing to serve in widely different practice environments. By not limiting yourself to a narrow choice of practice settings, you become more desirable as a practitioner who can fill in "wherever, whenever"—plus, you gain valuable clinical and professional experience that cannot be found in one place.

Obtain additional state licenses.Another way to become more marketable is to obtain additional state licenses. By acquiring more licenses, you can travel to new locations, practice in different clinical settings, expand your professional networking and stay busier than ever as you earn a comfortable living.

Become technologically savvy. The practice of medicine is becoming more computer-driven. Computerized patient charting, medical record-keeping and case management are standard procedures in many hospitals and medical practices. The more familiar you become with the technological side of modern medicine the more valuable you will be as a temporary addition to a medical staff.

Learn medical Spanish.Large hospitals, publicly funded clinics and even private practices are experiencing a dramatic surge in patient visits by children and adults from Hispanic communities.

Nurses who are bilingual or can communicate comfortably with Latino patients and their families are in demand. Even if you did not take Spanish in school, you can acquire a working knowledge of medical Spanish through web-based instruction. For sample websites, Google "medical Spanish."

As you pursue travel nursing opportunities, see yourself as a marketable asset. By broadening your perspective, opening yourself to a variety of practice options, increasing your knowledge base and sharpening your skills, you will become all the more desirable as a candidate who tops the list of travel nurses considered for choice temporary opportunities.

Catching Up with Our Travelers

Daniel Polanco is an adventurer at heart. He discovered that travel dialysis nursing is the perfect way to indulge in his favorite hobby—travel and earn a competitive income. When asked why he continues to travel, Daniel responds, “I continue to travel because I like visiting new places. Each new place is a learning experience.”

His favorite assignment so far was also his first assignment. He was in Moses Lake, Washington, home to one of the state's largest natural fresh water lakes. Daniel explains that this

was his favorite assignment because the patients were great, his prior experience was helpful and he was able to assist the facility further by becoming a preceptor.

Daniel made an impact on the patients as well as the staff in Moses Lake. In fact, he made such an impression on one patient that she swore Daniel was the only person who could control her blood pressure. Having a patient with that much faith in him must have made Daniel feel pretty good!

Like many travelers, Daniel’s dream assignment is in Hawaii. He is hoping that his next assignment will take him to this tropical destination. But if it doesn’t work out, he’ll be happy just tackling a new adventure and having new experiences. We’ll keep our fingers crossed that a Hawaiian adventure is in your near future, Daniel!

As a seasoned traveler, Daniel has learned a lot and had many interesting and exciting experiences. His advice to new travelers is “Keep an open mind and travel as long as you can for the experience.” That sounds like a true adventurer’s motto.
