Industrial systems are concerned with the organization andeffective utilization of available resources of modern manu-facturing and process industries so as to minimize wastesof time, money, materials, and energy. It is thus clear thatoptimization in industrial systems is crucial for the com-petiveness of any industry in a highly competitive economicenvironment. Consequently, how to utilize advanced mod-elling and optimization technologies as well as to developnew modelling and optimizations methods to design andmanage these systems has attracted the interest of manymathematicians, engineers, and practitioners.
Our intention with this special issue is to provide anopportunity for researchers to facilitate the dissemination oftheir latest theoretical findings and computational method-ologies in modelling, control, and optimization of industrialsystems. Thus, we invite authors to submit original researchand review papers on novel optimization theory and metho-dologies as well as their applications in industrial practice.Wehave received many submissions. All the submitted manu-scripts have subjected to rigorous peer-reviewing process and19 original research articles are finally selected to be pub-lished based on reviewers’ recommendations. In general, these papers have touched upon research topics in perfor-mance evaluation and optimization in supply chain and con-struction, modelling and optimization in manufacturing, optimal power allocation, and new optimization algorithmdevelopments.
Performance Evaluation and Optimization in Supply Chainand Construction. There are four papers that are related to
supply chain and three papers that are in construction area.Five of them focus on modelling and decision making andthe other two on performance evaluation. More specifically,in “Mathematical model of hybrid precast gravity frames forsmart construction and engineering” the authors proposedan optimized hybrid precast composite structural system forgravity system. In “Optimal guaranteed service time and ser-vice level decisionwith time and service level sensitive demand”the authors developed optimization models to determinethe optimal retail price, the optimal guaranteed servicetime, the optimal service level, and the optimal capacity tomaximize the expected profit of a two-stage supply chainwith one supplier and one retailer. In “A hybrid fuzzy analyticnetwork process approach to the new product developmentselection problem” a hybrid multiple criteria decision modelfor selecting the most suitable new colour calibration devicefor a company interested in the medical display monitormarket was developed. In “Development of a carbon emissioncalculations system for optimizing building plan based on theLCA framework” the authors proposed a partial framework toassess the carbon emission during the building construction.Several different LCA tools programs have been comparedand analysed to demonstrate the limitations of the currentapplication of LCA tools. Then, a new computer calculationsystem was developed. In “Closed-loop supply chain networkunder oligopolistic competition with multiproducts, uncertaindemands, and returns” an equilibrium model of a closed-loop supply chain network with multiproducts, uncertaindemands, and returns was studied. Two types of risks, over-stocking and understocking, were adopted to simulate the

uncertainty of demands and returns. The scheduling perfor-mance evaluation of LSSCwas explored and evaluation indexsystem was established in “Scheduling performance evalua-tion of logistics service supply chain based on the dynamic indexweight.” In “Evaluating the performance of absolute RSSI posi-tioning algorithm-based microzoning and RFID in construc-tionmaterials tracking” performance of RFID tracking systemin construction site was evaluated through field experiments. The experiment results showed that RFID tracking systembased on microzoning was reliable for materials tracking inconstruction site.
Modelling and Optimization in Manufacturing. There are fourpapers in modelling and optimization in manufacturing. In“Cellular scanning strategy for selective laser melting: capturingthermal trends with a low-fidelity, pseudo-analytical model”a low-fidelity pseudo-analytical model was introduced tomimic a finite element model and investigate its thermaltrends associated with the process for selective laser melting. In “Flexible stock allocation and trim loss control for cuttingproblem in the industrial-use paper production” an optimiza-tionmodel was built to solve a one-dimensional cutting stockproblem in which the stock widths was not used to fulfilthe order but kept for use in the future for the industrial-use paper production. The effectiveness of the proposedmodel was validated through real applications. In “Feedback-assisted iterative learning model predictive control with non-linear fuzzy model”, iterative learning control was combinedwith model predictive control to develop a feedback-assistediterative learning controller. Trajectory tracking of a steam-boiler nonlinear system was taken as an example to validatethe proposed approach. In “A plant propagation algorithmfor constrained engineering optimization problems” a newheuristic optimization method “plant propagation algorithm”was introduced to solve engineering optimisation problems.Seven benchmark test problems in engineering design weresolved by “plant propagation algorithm” as well as someexisting algorithms to demonstrate the effectiveness andefficiency of the proposed method.
Optimal Power Allocation. There are four papers on optimalpower allocation problem. In “Energy effective congestioncontrol for multicast with network coding in wireless ad hocnetwork” the joint optimization of congestion control andpower allocation was studied to maximize multicast utilityfunction and minimize energy consumption in wireless adhoc network. A novel distributed computational scheme wasproposed to solve the joint optimization problem based ondual decomposition scheme. In “Fuzzy multiobjective optimalpower flow based on modified artificial bee colony algorithm”a modified artificial bee colony algorithm was proposed tosolve multiobjective optimal power flow problem. In thismodified algorithm, the exploitation capacity was improvedthrough replacing the searching operation for new foodsource in artificial bee colony algorithm with mutation andcrossover operation in differential evolution. In “Multiob-jective RFID network optimization using multiobjective evo-lutionary and swarm intelligence approaches” RFID networkplanning was formulated as a multiobjective optimization
problem. Then, evolutionary algorithm and swarm intelli-gence were introduced to identify all the Pareto optimal solu-tions. In “Optimization of power allocation for multiusers inmulti-spot-beam satellite communication systems” optimizingthe power allocation of each user in multispot-beam satellitecommunication system was formulated as an optimizationproblem based on the trade-off of the maximization of thetotal system capacity and the fairness of power allocationamongst users. Comparing with the traditional power allo-cation algorithms, the proposed algorithm improved thefairness of the power allocation amongst the users.
Advanced Optimization Algorithm Developments. In “Globalminimization for generalized polynomial fractional program”a novel branch-and-bound method was proposed to solvepolynomial fractional optimization problems. Its contribu-tion was that a new strategy, called reduction operations, tocut away the branch based on monotonic optimization wasdeveloped. In “Error bounds and finite termination for con-strained optimization problems” a global error bound for theprojected gradient of nonconvex constrained optimizationproblems and a local error bound for the distance from afeasible solution to the optimal solution set were establishedbased on the definitions of generalized nondegeneration andgeneralized weak sharp minima. In “A cross-efficiency basedranking method for finding the most efficient DMU” a rankingmethod was developed to rank decision making units andfinding the most efficient decision making unit. In “Gametheoretic approaches to weight assignments in data envelop-ment analysis problems” fairly allocation amount of divisiblegoods or burdens among individuals or organizations withinmulticriteria environment was studied. The problem wasmodelled and solved under the framework of game theory.
