For me, harmony is most important – how it flows and becomes a new harmony. The melodic line is secondary. Perhaps this is because my ear is trained primarily to perceive harmonies. Nevertheless I don’t want to write simple music . . . it is important for me to create sounds that I truly feel. I conclude that I am constantly changing, searching for new paths, but absolutely not, once having found them, mass-producing them.

SANDRA MILLIKEN (b. 1961) is a highly acclaimed conductor, composer and arranger of choral music based in Brisbane, Australia. A music and education graduate of the University of New England, she also holds a Masters degree in choral conducting from the University of Queensland.

In 2001 Sandra was awarded a Churchill Fellowship that enabled her to further her studies in choral conducting, vocal and choral pedagogy, and the management of youth and women’s choirs. During this time she had the opportunity to observe, and work with, many international choral music specialists in England, Sweden, Finland, the United States and Canada.

Sandra has had a long involvement with choral singing and conducting, and has won many awards for her achievements in both areas. She has been the Artistic Director of the Queensland Youth Choir, a singing and choral music specialist at Cannon Hill Anglican College and was the founder of Chanterelle Women’s Choir. She is currently the musical director of The Bayside Divas and the Blackstone-Ipswich Cambrian Choir.

A versatile composer with a fresh melodic and harmonic approach, Sandra’s choral and solo works have been commissioned, performed and recorded in the United Kingdom, Scandinavia, Western Europe, south-east Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and North America. Her compositions, which span a variety of genres and range from easy to challenging, have broad appeal to singers across all age groups.

Sandra is widely in demand as an adjudicator and workshop clinician, working in Australia and overseas.
