EASTER TENNIS TOURNAMENT

Boort was blessed with fine weather (except for a brief shower onGood Friday morning) and three beautiful sunny days over the Easter break.

On the shores of a full Little Lake Boort, nearly 300 playersparticipated in the Boort Lawn Tennis Club’s 58th Easter TennisTournament.

Players came from all parts of the State to play tennis and socialisewith friends, family and strangers.

Acquaintances were renewed either across the net from each other orover a drink or something to eat.

Abilities stretched from “only hit at Boort at Easter” to players ofState Pennant Standard.

Ages ranged from eight and a half years to ………...well, who knowshow old that lady is??!!

Once again the members and friends of Boort Lawn Tennis Club put on a greattournament played on excellent grass courts (“the best courts in Victoria at this time of the year” was thegreeting on the phone) aided by terrific catering from dawn to dusk (and a bit later for some!)

Businesses from the Boort township can once again feel proud in their support of the Club for theweekend. Next year’s 59th tournament is the 60th anniversary of its inception.

SENIOR FOOTBALL REPORTWith the footy season well underway, Neville Massina has settled inwell as the Senior coach, with two wins from the first two rounds. The Seniors have started both of their matches slowly but gainedmomentum as the matches have gone on. The final quarter againstDonald was a topsy-turvey affair but we were able to hold on at thefinal siren. Best players for the first two rounds have been – WayneMaxted, Jackson Garvey-Hawke, Pete Manser, Danny Sipthorpe andMark Perryman. Congratulation also to Shannon Holland, Keiran Wilson and JohnathonLanyon who played their first senior game against Charlton in Round One. Great effortfrom you all.

This week’s match against Wedderburn will be a big test for the side as they will have toplay four consistent quarters to take home a win.

The Reserves had a successful start in Round One against Charlton, after much chatterduring the week on how many players they would have available. A consistent fourquarters was played by the team as the wind blew straight down the ground, providing somedifficulty in scoring into the wind, but the back line protected the score line, working hard.Round Two was a completely different scenario as the Reserves were dealt a rather severeloss by a much better Donald side. Best players in the first two rounds were – RyanMcGhie, Gerard Stringer and Matt Smith.

Stay around after each home game and listen to the awards, have a meal and enjoy thesocial activity that Leanne and her team have organised. This week it is “The Brains Trust”

Letter to Boort and District Community

I am writing this letter on behalf of all the Officers and Members of the Boort CFA tothe Boort Community to say thanks for all the assistance given during the Januaryfloods.

The floods showed us the strong community spirit that exists within our town anddistrict, that when the pressure was on everyone helped in some form or another. From those that filled and distributed sand bags, checked on neighbours, providedfood to the fire station and evacuation centre, volunteered their time to be of help inother ways, a big thank you.Without everyone helping, there would have been much greater pressure placed onCFA members and resources, which at some times were stretched to the limit.

We have learned a lot from this major flooding event and CFA along with otheremergency authorities are reviewing procedures to help the community if anothermajor emergency arises, whether it be from flood, fire or any incident.

Once again thank you to everyone who helped CFA and our local community.

Yours sincerely,

Glenn MercerCAPTAIN

Successful Boort Golf Club Meeting

An enthusiastic group of 40 golf players plus many apologies recorded were involved in a productive discussionregarding bringing the 18 hole golf course up to playing standard for the coming season.

Very heavy rain over the summer months has created an abundance of growth as well as badly damaging thesandscrapes and bunkers and there were also a number of trees blown over. This meant much work and anumber of volunteers indicated their willingness to help repair these problems, but more people are needed soplease see the President Peter Barraclough for information

There was much discussion about ways to cut back costs and to improve the income of the Golf Club. These included:

Switching from Saturday to Sunday golf for season 2011Encouraging members and interested people to purchase named gold or bronze plaques to be attached

to the chimney in the Club House.Volunteers to mow the course instead of paid GreenskeeperPossibility of selling a small amount of the irrigation waterTo look into encouraging more groups to have functions and catering at the Golf Club. The ladies

expressed interest in catering for small or medium sized functions.

The Opening Day was on Saturday 16th April with a day of fun events for both Ladies and Men (as well asafternoon tea) starting at the usual time for weekend golf. After the first day, golf will change to Sundays. In the meantime please keep coming out to the golf course to assist with the clean up and

continue to keep things tidy. Many hands make light work.

Ladies commenced their golf on Wednesday 20th April with a 14 hole event andafternoon tea after golf. Usual time of commencement. This is to get us into the golfingroutine before Pennant which goes for all the five Monday’s in Maycommencing at Boort on 2nd May.

Free Golf Coaching Clinics will be held on 4th and 18th May -3:00 pm and 4:00 pm.
