WELCOME / FÁILTE

I am delighted to introduce a fantastic array of productions to whet your

appetite at the heart of the world’s greatest festival city. From Michael Ball to

Michael McIntyre, from Dirty Rotten Scoundrels to Derren Brown, and from

Elvis Presley to Priscilla Queen of the Desert, there really is something for

everyone at the Playhouse.

This August we are thrilled to welcome Fergus Linehan’s first season as new

Director of the Edinburgh International Festival. The hugely exciting line up

includes Ballett Zürich with Wayne McGregor’s Kairos and Christian Spuck’s

Sonett; pioneering musician Max Richter and his Recomposed (a radical remix

of Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons with internationally renowned violinist Daniel

Hope and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra); Ballett am Rhein and Martin

Schläpfer’s Seven; plus a special appearance from Sufjan Stevens. For more

information visit eif.co.uk. Speaking of the Festival, the sell-out hit of last year’s

Festival, Inala returns for two performances in July featuring the world

renowned Ladysmith Black Mambazo.

Our packed Edinburgh Festival Fringe programme includes Forth on the

Fringe; a special live performance of BBC Radio’s I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue;

the Gilded Balloon’s 30th Anniversary Gala; Off the Kerb’s Comedy Gala in

aid of our nominated charity Waverley Care; plus a very special performance

from China staged by Zhang Jiangang (2008 Beijing Olympic Opening and

Closing ceremonies).

This season we also celebrate the 10th Anniversary of our hugely successful

Stage Experience with a very special production of Stephen Sondheim’s

Oscar-nominated musical Into The Woods, performed by our hugely

talented company of 11 to 24 year olds.

Last, but by no means least, I’m proud to introduce the

newest members of our supporting cast: our four new

hotel partners, perfectly lined up to make your

visit to the Playhouse that extra bit special.

Haste ye back!

The multi award-winning acknowledged master

of psychological illusion is back on tour in 2015

with a brand new one-man show, Derren Brown:

Miracle. Having confessed that performing live

on stage gives him the greatest pleasure, Derren

is, once again, looking forward to the challenge

that comes with being acknowledged as one of

the world’s most renowned live performers;

a dark manipulator of magic and mind control.

This will be Derren’s seventh show since 2003.

Since then he has toured every year and been

watched by an estimated audience of over one

and a half million people. He has won two

prestigious Olivier Awards, for Something

Wicked This Way Comes (2006) and Svengali

(2012). His last show, Infamous, was universally

acclaimed by critics and audience alike.

BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR...

MUSIC & LYRICS BY STEPHEN SONDHEIMBOOK BY JAMES LAPINE

ORIGINALLY DIRECTED ON BROADWAY BY JAMES LAPINEORCHESTRATIONS BY JONATHAN TUNICK

Sondheim and Lapine’s fabulous fractured fairytale

is the perfect family treat to mark the 10th Anniversary

of Stage Experience at the Edinburgh Playhouse.

Following the success of the Oscar-nominated Disney film

adaptation, this multi award-winning musical is based on Grimm’s

fairytales and follows a not-so-innocent quest to live ‘happily ever

after’. Featuring some of Sondheim’s most famous songs, including

Giants In The Sky and Children Will Listen, this production will

showcase the stars of the future on our prestigious stage.

A baker and his wife venture Into The Woods to reverse

a witch’s spell. Along the way they encounter an ambivalent

Cinderella, a gluttonous Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and his

precious Milky White cow, plenty of mothers at their wits’ end,

some not-so-princely Princes and the most mysterious

character of all – The Woods themselves and the

transformative magic that lies within.

From the pen of Stephen Sondheim (master of the

Broadway musical whose back catalogue includes West Side

Story, Gypsy, A Little Night Music, Assassins and Sweeney Todd),

don’t miss this stunning new production brought to life by

our hugely talented young company and director Peter Corry

(Les Misérables), musical director Matthew Reeve and

choreographer Louise Ferrier.

GET ALL SHOOK UP WITH THE HITS OF ELVIS PRESLEY

From the producers of Hairspray, Midnight Tango,

West Side Story and The Rocky Horror Show comes

a hilarious, feel-good musical featuring Elvis Presley’s

greatest hits.

In a small town in 1950’s America, a guitar-playing,

hip-swivelling stranger rides his motorbike into town.

Is he The Devil In Disguise or a Hound Dog in his Blue

Suede Shoes? The townsfolk are about to be All Shook Up

and could be headed for Heartbreak Hotel, but for Natalie,

the love-struck, tomboy mechanic, it really is Now or Never.

Packed with 25 of the best-loved songs by The King

himself, Love Me Tender, by the writer of the award-winning

West End and Broadway smash hit Memphis, is a funny

and moving tale of hope, second chances and the

healing qualities of Rock ’n’ Roll.
