In April 2014, ERM’s Edinburgh office relocated to 102 West Port in Edinburgh’s Exchange Business District. 102 West Port is a recent development offering spectacular views to the Castle and over the city. Its pivotal location, connecting the Exchange District, Holyrood and Quartermile, is only a short walk from the West End and both of Edinburgh’s main railway stations.

As a global leading consultancy providing environmental, sustainability, technical risk and health & safety advice to clients, selecting a new office with impressive green credentials was naturally an important objective for ERM.

102 West Port has a BREEAM rating of ‘Very Good’, an EPC rating of ‘B’ and ERM is pursuing a SKA rating accreditation having planned and carried out our office fit-out in accordance with SKA guidance to minimise environmental impact.

BREEAMBREEAM is the world’s foremost environmental assessment method and rating system for buildings; 250,000 buildings have certified BREEAM assessment ratings; and over a million have been registered for assessment since its launch in 1990. 102 West Port has achieved a BREEAM rating of ‘Very Good’ through key features including: efficient lighting; ventilation and thermal designs; sub metering to allow building users to monitor energy and water use; excellent links to public transport services; reduced risk of water waste through leak detection; re-use of brownfield land on a city centre site avoiding use

of new land and without affecting existing biodiversity or habitats; and non-toxic insulation materials specified throughout the building.

Video ConferencingState of the art video conferencing facilities have been installed, enabling staff to communicate effectively with other ERM offices and clients, reducing the environmental impact caused by travel.

Water and Energy EfficiencyFlow restricted taps, occupancy sensor controlled low-energy lighting, energy efficient appliances, and careful planning to maximise the benefit of natural light are just some examples of the considerations that were given during our fit-out. In addition, we have installed a sophisticated monitoring system, supplied by MeasureMyEnergy, which enables us to accurately report on water and electricity consumption.

Responsible Waste and RecyclingIn line with ERM’s commitment to reduce waste and recycle as much as possible, segregated collection arrangements have been put in place for the following waste streams: mixed recycling (cans, plastics, paper/card); confidential paper; glass; toner cartridges; food waste; batteries; hazardous waste; and general waste. All waste is measured for reporting and regular checks are carried out to ensure that service providers are managing our waste properly and maximising recycling.

SKA RatingErgonomic H&SCareful consideration has been given, and professional advice sought, when specifying furniture and workstation equipment for the new office. All workstations have been equipped with widescreen monitors on fully adjustable arms, desktop power supplies, high quality fully adjustable chairs and height adjustable desks. ERM’s HSEQ team has provided additional set-up support via our workstation assessment program, arranging one to one sessions with an external ergonomist where required.

Sustainable SuppliesEnsuring our new office remains sustainable throughout its operations is a key target for all staff tasked with buying products or supplies. It is our aim to carefully consider the environmental credentials of all suppliers and products before ordering. A thorough assessment has been carried out and controlled ordering arrangements are in place, for most of the regular items we purchase.

Accreditation for our office fit-out Operated by RICS, SKA Rating is an environmental assessment tool for sustainable fit-outs and was recently featured in the UK Government’s Low Carbon Action Plan. SKA Rating is an environmental assessment method, benchmark and standard for commercial fit-outs. It helps landlords and tenants assess fit-out projects against a set of sustainability good practice criteria.

ERM has worked closely with our contractors, suppliers and our SKA Rating Assessor to ensure that our fit out was planned and executed to meet assessment criteria to the fullest extent possible. As a result of this, we are now in the process of pursuing SKA Rating accreditation.
