    69 Marionville Road was purchasedin 2011 to serve as the UK Centrefor Taoist Tai Chi. The building

    was in a state of neglect and hadsuffered from vandalism bothinside and out. The large internalspace is ideal for the practise ofTaoist arts, and the site offered theopportunity to contribute to andengage with the local communityby improving its condition andoffering the health benets ofTaoist Tai Chi arts to all whowish to receive them.

    Fung Loy Kok Taoist Tai Chibelongs to a tradition many

    thousands of years old, the UKCentre also has a history, albeit alittle less ancient. It appears that

    the site was undeveloped untilaround 1908 when railway sidingswere located in the area currentlyoccupied by the rear car park. In

    the early 1930s the rst buildingwas constructed on the site.

    Murchison House is the ScottishHeadquarters of the BritishGeological Survey, the oldestnational geological survey in theworld. Purpose built, in a cruciformshape, the chamfered corners andglazed stair lights were designed

    to echo the facets of a crystallinestructure. The architect was AllanPendreigh of Property ServicesAgency and the building openedin 1977, winning Build in Brick andBonny Brick awards.

    Built on the site of a Roman fort,there have been references to achurch in Cramond as far back as1256. The current building is on thesite of its predecessors and its plaincruciform shape can be traced to1656. Cramond Kirk continues tobe a vibrant and well-supportedchurch with strong links to thelocal community. Cramond Kirksgraveyard is not only very wellmaintained but has gravestonesdating back to 1608 and a numberof Commonwealth war graves.

    The 20m high stone tower wasbuilt by a local landowner in 1871

    to commemorate Sir WalterScott. It is a Victorian folly whichcommands a wonderful view of

    St Martins Community ResourceCentre is a recently sympatheticallyredeveloped community hub for

    the Gorgie Dalry area of Edinburgh.Built in the 1880s, this category Blisted building has been, since theearly 1980s, St Martins EpiscopalChurch. This last congregation

    still worships in the building, butit is also home to Gorgie DalryCommunity Association and a hostof community groups who will beon hand to give examples of theactivities on offer in the ResourceCentre.

    A hexagonal building built in1825 by William Playfair for TheDuddingston Curling Society. Thebuilding lies within the lovely DrNeils Garden and sits on the banksof Duddingston Loch. The building,now restored, houses a Museumof Curling in the lower chamberand an interpretation room in

    the upper chamber, with historyof Duddingston Village, Dr Neils

    Garden, Sir Walter Scott, WilliamPlayfair and John Thomson.

    the chapel with wood carvingsof animals and nature study byThomas Good.

    The Wauchope Mausoleum is asingle-storey tomb house dating

    from 1735 and enclosing a graveslab which dates from 1587. It waspart of Niddrie House which wasdemolished in around 1968. TheMausoleum is a Scheduled AncientMonument and is Category B listed.

    The Manseld Traquair Centreis a former Catholic ApostolicChurch. The building features anoutstanding mural scheme paintedby Phoebe Anna Traquair in the1980s. The renovated building,designed by Sir Robert RowandAnderson, now houses the ScottishCouncil for Voluntary Organisations(SCVO). This year visitors will havea rare opportunity to view SCVOsstunning ofces, usually hiddenbehind closed doors.

    16. LOTHIAN BUSESCENTRAL DEPOT55 ANNANDALE STREET, EH7 4AZ

    Constructed in just a few weeksin 1922 as Edinburghs Industrial

    Exhibition Hall the building playedhost to many large national showsin the 1920s, including the ScottishMotor Show and EdinburghsChristmas Fun Fair. The buildingbecame a bus garage in 1926 andwas extended in 1933 and 1963 toaccommodate the ever expandingeet of buses.

    The Inch Nursery is City ofEdinburgh Councils plant nurseryand training centre covering a 10acre site within Inch Park. Openedin 1982, it produces around a

    million plants each year. Theseare used for the Citys parks,gardens, planters and oral displays,including the famous Floral Clock inPrinces Street Gardens. Visitors willbe able to see behind the scenesof Edinburghs vibrant green spacesenjoyed by so many residents andvisitors to the City.

    Built around 1617 for JamesWinram, Keeper of the Signet ofScotland, Inch House was originallyan L-shaped tower with barrelvaulted ceilings on the lower oor.In 1660 it was purchased by Sir

    John Gilmour, President of theCourt of Session, who also boughtCraigmillar Castle at the same

    time. It remained in the Gilmourfamily until 1946, when it was sold

    to the local council. The buildingstill retains many of its originalstructures and features and nowoperates as a busy communitycentre. Visitors to the House willlearn of the history of the buildingand of its inuential owners. Theywill also hear of plans to refurbishpart of the building which datesback to 1634.

    The Yard Adventure Centre hasbeen running play sessions forchildren and young people withdisabilities for over 25 years. Thecurrent building was opened byHRH Princess Anne in 1993 and

    was virtually untouched until twoyears ago when the team fromBBC DIY SOS The Big Build andover 300 tradespeople from allover Edinburgh and Lothians gaveit a major overhaul in just 9 days aspart of BBC Children in Need.

    Located on Union Street, amongstsome of Edinburghs mostbeautiful Georgian architecture,Edinburgh Printmakers wasoriginally a washhouse for thelocal community.     in Edinburghs social history anda fantastic opportunity to seebehind the scenes at Scotlandsbusiest print studio. Guided studio

    Originally the home of a smallScottish religious sect, theA-listed former place of worshipis hidden within the residentialneighbourhood on Barony Street.Designed by Alexander Black, itwas completed in 1835 and was

    the largest and most elaborate ofthe Glasites 30 properties acrossScotland. Inside you can get close to

    the pulpit designed by David Brycein 1873, the decorative cupola andsit at the original feast tables atwhich the Glasites ate and drank.

    The gothic faade of St MarysMetropolitan Cathedral is all

    that remains of the much smallerSt Marys Chapel designed byGillespie Graham, 1814. After redamage a rebuilding programmewas undertaken by John Biggar in1891. Recent additions include theorgan by Matthew Copley in 2007with its beautiful copper-amed32ft pipes, the largest organ tohave been installed in Scotland in

    The gardens were establishedunder a private Act of Parliamentin 1822, the purpose of whichwas to safeguard the open spacealong Queen Street as communalpleasure gardens. The landscapepainter, Andrew Wilson, designed

    the layout in 1823 and ver y littleof the original structure has alteredover the years. The West Districtof Queen Street Gardens is themost level of the three gardensand possessed in 1823 a variety ofmature trees. This allowed Andrew

    Wilson to create one of the most

    successful and delightfully laid outgardens in the New Town. Thegardens were affected more than

    the other Queen Street Gardensby the Second World War, as manyarmy detachments were stationedat the West End of the New Town.

    The Circus was laid out by WilliamPlayfair in 1823 and took ve years

    to build. Twelve houses and twotenement blocks make up thenorth side of the Circus. Thesegrand houses had private reargardens but the fashion of the timewas to incorporate a communalornamental pleasure ground.The upkeep of these gardens isenshrined in the ownership of aproperty on Royal Circus. In 1879

    the gardens were almost handedback to the council on a 20 yearlease as they were in such bad

    condition. Thanks to a deputationheaded by Professor Sir HenryLittlejohn (1828-1924) Edinburghsrst Medical Ofcer Of Healthwho lived at 24 Royal Circus (andinspiration for Sherlock Homes)

    the gardens were again broughtback to an acceptable standard.The railings were removed during

    the war but were replaced in theoriginal design in 1975 with helpfrom the New Town ConservationCommittee. The arch was replacedin the1990s and modelled on

    the cast iron gateway atDrummond Place.

    This chapel is one of the oldestbuildings in Edinburgh, datingfrom 1541. Beginning as a RomanCatholic Chapel, it became afocal point at the time of theReformation in 1560. For threehundred years it was the guild hall of

    the Incorporation of Hammermen.It has associations with theBaptist and Methodist churchesin Scotland, and was where many

    The Assembly Hall was designedby David Bryce and built in 1858-9. The back of the Hall facingCastlehill was extended east by

    J. M. Dick Peddie in 1885, withfurther work in 1902-3. In 1900, theUnited Presbyterian Church anda majority of the Free Church ofScotland united as the United FreeChurch of Scotland; the AssemblyHall was henceforth used by thenewly united church. The UnitedFree Church of Scotland and theChurch of Scotland united in 1929.The Assembly Hall thus became

    the Assembly Hall of the reunitedChurch of Scotland. Overlooking

    the Moderators chair, the centreof the south gallery was adapted

    to become the Throne Gallery
