Term 3 Week 8 2016

Principal Report The term is moving very quickly and keeps getting busier. I am amazed by the talents of our students and staff as I have been moving in and out of the hall whilst watching musical rehearsals. The Musical is fast approaching and everyone is very excited! Our school was very well represented at the Zone Athletics Carnival. We are excited to announce Sukontha Vaenkwaen was the 11 Years Girls Champion for 2016. Sukontha will be receiving her medal at our next Monday’s assembly. STATE KNOCKOUT RUGBY UNION CHAMPIONS!!!

Edgeworth started to wrestle back the initiative, with Jack scoring just before halftime to lead 12-7 at the break. However as the second half began, urged on by the cheering crowd, Edgeworth produced their best rugby of the year! With Sam and Lauchlyn pulling the strings, Edgeworth went on a scoring spree, completely dominating Harbord. A second try each to Daniel and Jack, before a quick double to Georgia, and a try to Kai, saw Edgeworth rack up a record final score of 45-12, to take out the championship! Congratulations to Georgia, who was selected as Player of the Final by the NSW PSSA Rugby Union Convenor. As a team, the boys and girl have worked extremely hard to achieve this amazing feat, training strongly and working well as a team. Over the course of the Knockout, they have had an average winning score of 53-5, showing how well they have performed. However these things do not happen without the support of some wonderful parents and family members, who have supported the team the whole way, including trips up and down the coast, so I would personally like to thank all of those parents and family members for their support of the kids.

Jarrod Mullen Cup Champions! The following day on September 1, Edgeworth PS backed up again, this time playing Rugby League in the Jarrod Mullen Cup Finals, a competition the school has not won since 2012. Battling some mental and physical fatigue after such a big day the day before, Edgeworth had a sluggish 8-0 win over East Maitland PS. However the win came at a cost, with Jack injuring his ankle and being ruled out for the rest of the day. The team regrouped, with a crappy 16-8 win over Anna Bay PS, before producing a brilliant match against the also undefeated St Patrick’s Cessnock, winning 24-0 to top their pool and earn a place in the final. With momentum on their side, Edgeworth defeated Biddabah PS 16-4 in their last rugby league match together for 2016, and be crowned Jarrod Mullen Cup Champions. Kade was selected as Player of the Day by the organisers, and Noah as Player of the Final. Attendance Our Term 3 and 4 focus at Edgeworth Public School is ‘Attendance’. We are encouraging parents to speak to students about being at school on time, before the bell and the importance of spending the whole day at school. Some of our students regularly arrive up to and exceed 30 minutes late. The beginning of the day is the most vital learning window. During the first 30 minutes of everyday teachers are teaching the hierarchy of reading. If your child regularly misses this important session there is a high likelihood that they will begin to fall behind. Did you know that if your child misses 10 minutes a day, that adds up to half a year of learning over their schooling years and if they miss 20 minutes a day they miss a whopping whole year in their learning? Your assistance in this matter is appreciated! NAPLAN All Year 3 and Year 5 NAPLAN results for 2016 were sent home last week with your child. If you wish to discuss your child /children’s results please make contact with your child’s classroom teacher or their stage supervisor for any concerns, queries or report clarification. School Works We are very excited that our Preschool renovations will be continuing this school holiday. The preschool will be getting new lino and carpet which will be a lovely addition to our newly painted walls. New Awards The PBL team is excited to announce the new additions to our rewards systems. We have ‘Student of the Week’ awards and a ‘Random Acts of Kindness’ award which is sponsored by First National Real Estate Edgeworth. Congratulations to Sebastian Grackzyk, who was the winner of the first award.

Kinder orientation Our 2017 Kindergarten information night was held on Tuesday 23rd August which was an amazing night thanks to the organisation of Mrs Emma Collier. Our Kindy Club program will commence next term and provide children with many opportunities to get to know each other, the school and

interact with our wonderful staff. Whilst the children are busily involved in these activities, parents and carers have the opportunity to attend information sessions that have been planned and to learn about the wonderful programs that are on offer at our great school. If you have a child starting school next year, please visit our friendly office staff to collect an enrolment package. Student Training for Stair Safety in Hall with Railing Removed Please be advised that during the week of the musical the stair railings on either side of the stage stairs will be removed. This is done due to the lack of space as students pass the audience throughout various items. The rails will be removed on Friday and reattached Thursday Week 10. Staff will need to undertake explicit training with their own class to ensure that all students remain safe throughout the week. Training will need to be done with all students and students will need to be monitored and retrained if necessary. Teachers will:

1. Explain to the students the rails have been removed for the purpose of movement and

safety during the musical for both students and audience

2. Inform students that the BOTTOM STEP ONLY is to be used to enter and exit the stage area

3. Demonstrate the use of the step to both enter and exit the stage area

4. Under close monitoring allow students to practise the use of the bottom step only

5. Continue to use this process during musical rehearsals and any hall use

6. Ensure that ALL students are aware of the procedure and continue to monitor its use

** Ensure that no matter what direction students enter or exit the stage from that they are to use the bottom step only. If students enter or exit the stage using the side stage curtain area this will need to be explicitly taught and practised with students.

Stage News Early Stage 1 Kindergarten have been extremely busy over the past couple of weeks. We have been practising our items for the musical and we are all super excited to perform! A reminder to please keep bringing in your costumes and student availability notes, please see your child’s teacher if you have any questions. A reminder to students to bring in their home readers regularly to change for new readers to take home. Congratulations to all those students making huge efforts with their home reading. As the weather changes, a large number of hats and jumpers are turning up in lost property. To make sure that your child’s property is returned to them, if it goes missing, please make sure their name is clearly labelled on the inside. Notes about Kindergarten’s excursion to the Sydney Aquarium will go home this week, stay tuned!

Stage 1 Excursion Next term stage 1 students will be participating in an excursion to the Wetlands. Notes will be sent home Week 1 with payment due by week 3. This excursion will support the “Bug’s life” unit of work that Stage 1 have been completing this term.

The PBL Corner

During weeks 7 & 8, Edgeworth Public School students have been learning about healthy friendships and how to maintain them. This has included explicit lesons about respect and getting along. Friends are an important part of our lives, both as children and adults. What would life be like without friends? How would your school day be without them? Why is it important to keep your friendships health? Thanks to First National Real Estate, Edgeworth Public School has been given the opportunity to provide a Random Acts of Kindness Award each month to a student who has been generous, caring or compassionate. The winner of the award will receive a certificate and a $50 Movie Pass. EPS students will be working hard to show kindness to fellow students, parents and staff.

SRC - Fundraising/Charities Committee SRC - Fundraising/Charities Committee Cupcake Day 5E & 3/4C will be hosting Cupcake Day tomorrow - Wednesday 7 September. Cupcakes will be sold for $0.50-$1.00. Please help support this SRC fundraiser and buy a delicious cupcake. Ring Pull Collection Just a reminder that we are continuing to ask all school community members to collect ring pulls and send them into school to raise money for charity. The ring pulls will be cashed in to raise money for the Newcastle Ronald McDonald House. Please start sending in your ring pulls as soon as possible. Each classroom has a bag/container to collect their ring pulls in. Our next ring pull collection will take place at the end of Term 3. We will weigh the amount of ring pulls each class has collected to determine which class has collected the most. Students in the winning class will get a reward. Start collecting ring pulls today!

Sport News NSW PSSA Rugby Union Carnival Congratulations to Georgia Chapple, Lauchlyn Spicer-Douglas, Jake Hodgins, Jack Barlow and Kade Youlten, who represented Hunter PSSA at the NSW PSSA Rugby Union Carnival in Mudgee two weeks ago. All had magnificent carnivals, playing a key role in Hunter placing 3rd at the carnival.

PSSA Netball and Soccer - Round 12 v Barnsley PS

On Friday 26 August, Edgeworth played their last round of the PSSA netball competition against Barnsley PS. Both of the netball teams came away with great wins to end the season. The juniors won 20-3 and the seniors won 32-5. Well done to both teams on their fabulous efforts this season.

Both netball teams have qualified for the PSSA netball finals day that will be held on Friday 9 September at Nancy Dwyer Netball Courts at Cardiff. Students have to give Mrs Rowe $7 prior to the day. Both teams will play 2 games on the day juniors- 10am and Midday and seniors- 11am and 1pm. Good luck to both teams.

Soccer On Friday, August 26, Edgeworth travelled to Barnsley for the final round of the PSSA round robin competition. The juniors were up first and began with a solid start. Combining well, they maintained good possession of the ball but were unable to convert. It was then against a run of play that Barnsley were able to go ahead 1-0. Needing only a draw to move through to the finals, the second half was a sign of Edgeworth’s determination. Edgeworth were able to dominate possession, spending the majority of the time in Barnsley’s end. With several chances flying past the goals, Edgeworth were extremely unlucky not to add to the scoresheet, ending the game down 0-1 and finishing the round robin in 5th. Congratulations to the boys and the way they have played as a team throughout the competition. The possibilities remain bright for Edgeworth soccer well into the future. The seniors were up next and, once again, a positive result was a guarantee of making the finals. Lose or draw and the chance of continuing in the competition would rely on other results. The seniors started well, working together to move the ball around and being solid in defence. As the ball moved back and forth, a slight lapse in concentration allowed the home side to sneak one in. A spirited fight back in the second half saw Edgeworth take full advantage of a goalie error with a skillful lob to level the score 1-1. With a renewed spirit, Edgeworth gave their all but a late goal from Barnsley resulted in a 1-2 final score. Fortunately, results in other games went in Edgeworth’s favour and we wish the boys all the best as they play in the finals series at Federal Park, Wallsend on Friday.
