EDGEHILL: A GREAT PLACE TO LIVE!

Possibly because of age, as well as wear and tear, the Edgehill pool has recently sprung a leak and is slowly but surely draining water intothe ground. At this point in time, we still have not been able to locate the source of the leak, although we hope to over the next fewweeks. Once we find the leak, we will have to repair it, which will cost us money we don't really have. In the past, when things neededto be done, people have been generous in donating the funds necessary to make it happen. We are once again in a position where weneed people to step up and help. If you can see your way clear to give some small donation to help defray the cost of pool repair, wewould be grateful. Please contact Theresa Walker at: [email protected] (757-876-6188) if you can help.ALSO: If you have an intimate knowledge of plumbing in, around, or beneath a pool, contact Roxanne Lord: [email protected],or 890-9432; or Theresa Walker (See above.)

A great thank-you to those people who have generously donated funds for the repair of the pool. Your donations aredeeply appreciated and will help defray the cost of repairs.

HELP NEEDED WITH CLUBHOUSE PROJECTS!

Volunteers needed to complete one or two projects around the Edgehill Clubhouse. This is a good opportunity for a teenneeding voluneer hours. Contact: Theresa Walker at: [email protected] (757-876-6188)1. Painting exterior trim on the clubhouse.2. Slides on playground, and the playground in general3. Tree with fungus needs to be treated or cut down.

What a class act!Between the fur coat and the shoes, Irma Cane

has it all!

Need Volunteers to help with Pool "Kid's Day Care" visiting groups.

We have two organizations who bring a group of kids to the pool one day a week during the summer for two or three hours. Whenthey arrive, we need volunteers to sign them in, give them instructions about pool rules, and hand out arm bands. We also needsomeone to remain at the pool during the time they're there. Traditionally, the groups have been well-behaved and no trouble. If you are willing and interested, contact Roxanne Lord: [email protected] or 890-9432. These summer camp kids usually come

betwen 12 noon and 12:30, but are gone by 2:30 or 3:00 at the very latest. One group arrived on Monday and the other on Friday last year. Thedays will most likely remain the same this season.

One of the greatest gifts you can give to yourloved ones is to listen to them.

Keith Pelletier has had an interesting and an exciting life. He was born in Quantico, VA.“I was a Marine Corps Brat,” Keith said. “I grew up moving all over, and attended four high schools in four years,

starting in Pensacola Florida and ending in Newport, RI.”After graduating from high school in Newport, Keith entered the University of Maine as an Earth Science major. “I'd

always had an interest in ships, the sea, and in science,” he said. "While I was at UMaine, I learned that nearby SouthernMaine Tech had aMarine Science program and anOceanographic training ship. I jumped at it, which turned out to be fun,but also tough going. We spent a month of each 16 week semester on the ship, and had to cram eighteen semester hoursinto twelve weeks, but it was a fulfilling and happy time. I also had the added benefit of learning navigation and marine engineering there."After graduating, Keith discovered just how rare jobs were in the field of Oceanography. He joined the Coast Guard in September of 1979 after

learning about their oceanographic program with a Marine Science Technician jobspecialty.Without a meteorology background, however, he had to wait for two years to attendthe Coast Guard’s Marine Science Technician School. While on the waiting list, he was assignedto a Coast Guard station in PortsmouthNewHampshire, where he qualified to run rescue boatsoff the coast of New Hampshire and Maine. “It was blast,” he said. “But I do remember doingsome serious praying in stormy seas!” Upon graduation from the Coast Guard Marine ScienceSchool, he was assigned to the Coast Guard’s oceanographic cutter Evergreen. While on theEvergreen, he spent time in the North Atlantic and the Arctic doing oceanographic surveys, studying andmodeling the LabradorCurrent and themotion of icebergs for the International Icepatrol. He then went to the International Ice Patrol in Groton, CT, where he worked until 1987. He

flew as an Aerial Ice Observer, tracking icebergs and using the information to warn ships at seain the busy North Atlantic shipping lanes about the icebergs' locations. The goal was to preventanother Titanic catastrophe.

“It was the best job in the world. We spent part of the year on Ice ReconnaissanceDetachments, flying out of Newfound, Labrador andGreenland. Then we would jump on shipsand conduct Oceanographic surveys, using the data to improve our products. I was fortunateenough to be there when we were computerizing the Ice Patrol. I learned a number of

programming languages and was part of a team that wrote programs to predict where the icebergs we found would travel based upon the oceancurrents. The idea was that if we could accurately predict where an iceberg would be, we could save on expensive flight hours. We were quitesuccessful.”At that point, Keith was promoted out of a job and began working as a computer systems manager in Washington. Realizing that it would be

difficult to return to Marine Science, he was selected for Officer Candidate School. After being commissioned, he entered the Maritime Safety andSecurity field, where he spent the last 23 years of his career. Among other things, he worked in oil and hazardous materials emergency response:When there was an oil spill, he made sure it was cleaned up properly. He was involved in ship safety inspections, including small vessels up to cruiseships, oil tankers and more, as well as marine casualty investigations. “The idea is to prevent accidents, and then if a casualty occurs, we investigateto find the cause and hopefully prevent future accidents,” Keith added.

In the course of his Coast Guard career, he was stationed in multiple places, including Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Seattle, Philadelphia, St.Croix in the Virgin Islands, Toledo, OH, Portsmouth, VA, and Yorktown. While in St. Croix from 1999-2001, he commanded a Marine SafetyDetachment. “It was fun, but was a seven-day-a-week job,” he said.” It was also adventuresome: “I don’t know what was scarier: The hurricanesor being alone on a deserted beach with $2 million of cocaine, praying that the good guys would show up before the bad guys!” After departing St.Croix, he taught in the Marine Safety Schools here in Yorktown from 2001-2006, and was the Chief of the Coast Guard’s Marine Inspection andInvestigation School.Keith met his wife, Tammy, while teaching in Yorktown. She was also in the Coast Guard, and attended one of his courses. They eventually

exchanged phone numbers and were married in October of 2003. Their first year of marriage was long-distance, as she was stationed in Boston. She eventually moved to the area in September of 2004. They now have three children: Ben, 13; Ryan, 11; Zoey, 9, all of whom are home-schooled(A big job).In 2006, Keith left the area and was assigned as the Commanding Officer of the Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit in Toledo, Ohio. “Another

great job I was fortunate to have,” he said. “We covered all maritime operations in western Lake Erie, and worked with multiple Federal and Stateagencies in border security and anti-terrorism. He transferred back to the area in 2009, where he was assigned to the Coast Guard Atlantic AreaCommand in Portsmouth doing strategic planning. That’s when he and Tammy found their house in Edgehill. “I lived nearby onmy first Yorktowntour, and I had always liked the neighborhood, so we were fortunate to find a home here. Looking at yet another transfer, he decided to retire in2012 after 33 years of service. “I was tired of moving, and we loved it here and didn’t want to leave,” he said.Keith has always been very involved in his children’s activities, acting as Cub Scout Leader for six years. From there, he volunteered to work

as the Recruit Coordinator with the Yorktown Fife and Drum Corps after son Ben joined. “I help with recruiting, act as a go-between for parentswho come in, provide help and information, and track kids’ progress and learning, including the time they spend coming to practice and performing. To advance from Junior Corps to Senior Corps in Fife & Drum, and wear the uniform, a player must learn the instrument and have a minimumof 66% attendance and performance. In the process they learn to play a musical instrument, learn history, and gain leadership skills. They also earnvolunteer hours—not bad for a mere $35 a month. Not to let toomuchmoss attach itself to his north side, Keith is now taking guitar lessons with his younger son Ryan. “I’ve discovered that while

my son can listen to the guitarmusic and pick it up quickly, it takesmemuch longer,” he said. His daughter is learning to play the violin. “We attendedMerle Fest in North Carolina and my daughter was captured by the fiddle. “She decided she wanted to learn, so now she’s taking lessons. She alsotakes piano lessons and does quite well.”In addition to the home schooling, guitar lessons, scouts, Fife & Drum, Keith has also found time to volunteer for the Edgehill Homeowners

Association. Besides doing odd jobs like replacing toilets in the building, and general work around the grounds, he has served on the board since2014. His wife Tammy is involved with the Edgehill Eels. Keith and his family are a definite asset to the Edgehill community.
