Treatment: Edgehill offers state of the art treatment of very high quality. It is distinguished by time-tested methods pioneered at Hazelden andfurther embellished by the alcoholism/ cross-addiction field. No gimmicks.Strong emphasis on group therapy, education, individual counseling, Al-coholics Anonymous.

A patient is assigned to one of three therapy groups: Alcohol-only pa-tients are assigned to groups managed by C.A.C.'s. Cross-addicted patientsare assigned to specialized groups that focus on drugs and alcohol. Patientswith serious emotional problems in addition to addiction are assigned togroup therapy managed by clinical psychologists.

Each patient is assigned to a 24-bed residential unit. There are six ofthese. Patients go through the entire program as members of their as-signed unit. One totally female unit with a female staff. Two are coeduca-tional and the rest are all male. The staff for each unit is composed of asenior counselor, four additional counselors, a member of the clergy (serv-ing two units), a psychologist (serving two units), plus recreational thera-pists who serve the whole program, five in number. Add to this, two nightcounselors.

The goal at Edgehill is abstention from all mind-altering drugs. As anexample, an alcoholic who abstains from alcohol but tries marijuana willeventually be led back to the "drug of his choice."

"We do not look at it as 'a drug is a drug is a drug'. Drugs are alldifferent, act differently within the brain. We try to teach a more differen-tiated view of alcoholism and drug dependency in our approach. What webasically do is embrace the modern disease concept of alcoholism: a bio-psycho-social model of the disease. Biological, psychological, and culturalfactors all mesh together to produce illness. We teach self-understandingbut we also teach our patients about the importance of environment. Wedo not want patients to return to a psychologically toxic environment.

"Valium and cocaine are vastly different drugs (in their impact on thebrain) and I think the motivation in taking them must be vastly different. The so-called' dynamics of addiction' are not the same for all drugs." -J. W.

High risk environments are to be avoided for fear of relapse. Life stylesare addressed.

The rehabilitation and medical staffs at Edgehill include medical direc-tor, psychologists, nurses, physician's assistants, a dietitian, recreationaltherapists, clergy, and counselors. Add to this another therapeutic aspectwhich is peer interaction. "Peer One Session" occurs at the start of the 3rdweek of treatment when the patient is given feedback from his/her peerson the unit: Aleveling process where the patient finds exactly where he orshe stands in treatment. This is not a "heavy confrontation but if you arejerking the program around you willbe told that. We have had a number ofpatients who really feel their peer sessions turned them around. We valuepeer interaction within the separate units highly."-J.W.

Each patient will do AA Fourth Step while in residence.

Author's Comments: Edgehill is a top-rated facility, recommended highlyby competitors as well as by everyone else in the business of drug-alcoholcounseling and treatment. Clean, orderly, happy-the staff radiates healthand recovery. John Wallace, Director of Treatment, is the author of manybooks on alcoholism and addiction. He sets the pace with a quick mind anda pleasing, open disposition. I was very impressed by the atmosphere ofthe place and the brilliance of John Wallace and the overwhelming senseof intelligence and competence of the total staff.

I want to add that I ate lunch with chairman Chet Kirk and presidentFrank Fanella in Edgehill's commodious dining room. Each man dis-played a sense of humor and a dedication to his work. It was one of thetwo most enjoyable interludes of pure sociability I was to have on my longtrek across the country (the other was an evening meal in Montana, hostedby the Rimrock Foundation). I mention this because it occurred to methen, and stays with me now, that I was with wonderful people who aretotally committed to the best treatment possible.

My only real complaint relates to the weekend family program. I preferan intense family week that can have a cumulative and unforgettableeffect. A minor complaint relates to "boomboxes." No rehab center shouldallow them.

Rating: Excellent.
