P.S. Feel free to drop me a line at [email protected].

ver the two years since I joined Club magazine, I’ve witnessed the transformation of the Edgars brand,

under the leadership of CEO Jürgen Schreiber, from a local department store into a mega destination for some of the coolest fashion brands around.

First up was a host of local designers, including Thula Sindi, Jo Borkett and Marion & Lindie. More recently we’ve seen Forever New and Mango open fab shop-in-shops inside a number of Edgars stores.

The exciting news is that every fashionista’s go-to fast-fashion brands, Topshop and Topman, will soon be joining the exciting in-store line-up.

O I was lucky enough to attend the recent Topshop stand-alone store launch at the V&A Waterfront and rubbed shoulders with Cape Town’s stylistas while making use of the 20% launch discount to shop up a storm – my Edgars card (yes, you really can shop Topshop using your Edgars card, what a bonus!) has not yet recovered.

Better yet, a little (very well-informed) birdie told me that Edgars customers are going to be wowed over the coming year by the launch of many international brands, available at the majority of Edgars stores.

After decades of envying the rest of the world who have always had high-street fashion at their fingertips, I think this is seriously exciting news. My advice? Get

ready to shop. And if money’s too tight to mention, be inspired by this month’s Budget Style issue. The Club team had lots to say about shopping on a budget – we know that come mid-year the bank balance may be looking a little bleak, so don’t fret about trying to look luxe on a shoestring – we’ve got you covered.

As always, happy shopping!

TOPSHOP KNOWS BESTAn invitation to Topshop before the doors officially opened, and a session with their in-store personal shopper: Club’s editor Justine Stafford reports back on an afternoon of sartorial delight

t’s four o’ clock on a rainy Wednesday afternoon and I am late. I hastily park my car, grab my

handbag and run (as fast as you can in five-inch heels) across the Breakwater Bridge and through the revolving doors of the V&A Waterfront. I have an appointment with Topshop’s London-based personal shopper, Jessica Wright, who is in Cape Town for the opening of the brand’s new store, and I don’t want to keep her waiting.

What I do not expect to see as I step into the shopping centre are hordes of teenagers literally camping outside the store. It’s more than 12 hours before the official opening. However, armed with their cellphones for entertainment, they seem happy enough to wait.

Feeling guilty for being granted early entry into the inner sanctum of cool, I step into the shiny, happy space that is Topshop: the music is pumping, there are assistants dressed to rock the high street rushing about, and clothes, oh beautiful clothes, as far as the eye can see.

But there is no time to waste: the media launch is that evening and I still need to find a suitably stylish outfit to wear to it. I am ushered into the Personal Shopping suite where Jessica – who manages a team of 16 personal shoppers at Topshop’s London HQ in Oxford Circus – is ready to impart her wisdom.

Pretty and petite with big green eyes and long dark hair, Jessica is an intriguing mix of rock-chick and glamour girl – inevitable, she tells me, as she grew up with a musician for a father and a boutique owner for a mother. As a girl, she loved seeing what her mother wore every day, and would often while away hours in her shop, watching how she displayed different pieces. “I always knew I wanted to work in fashion,” Jessica says, adding, “This is a dream job for me. Every London girl grew up with Topshop and now I get to shop it for a living.”

We immediately get down to business: I explain to Jessica that I am a time-poor, working mother who often shops in

a rush, only to later regret hastily made purchases. Jessica’s spent the past eight years perfecting the art of personal shopping for Topshop, so when she says smart shopping is actually very simple, I believe her. “Think about how many different ways you can wear a piece before you buy it,” she advises. “Consider layering, colour combinations and even different make-up looks. That way you won’t get bored with what you buy.”

As for rules about shopping for your body type, Jessica warns these can be

limiting. “Try things on and see what works. Think about how different proportions, shapes and colours work together.” Even better, make an appointment with a personal shopper so they can do the work for you: it’s as easy as filling out a style brief before you arrive, then working with your designated personal shopper who picks out relevant options and accessories for you.

I worry, though, that I’m not the Topshop target market. Surely it’s fast fashion aimed at those brand-obsessed teenagers outside? Not at all, Jessica reassures me. “I have clients in their sixties who come to me for beautiful, premium pieces that are also timeless.”

What South African shoppers may not know is that Topshop’s Unique range is hot off the London Fashion Week runway and is aimed at a more sophisticated level, while the Limited range offers, as the name suggests, a low-volume collection that is snapped up by those who find it first.

Even if premium brands are not your thing, Jessica tells me, every woman should own a pair of Topshop jeans. “My sister, my mum and my boyfriend’s mum all wear them. They’re great because there’s a fit for everyone… I can’t live without them.”

Now it’s my turn to shop. As we walk around the store, I’m immediately drawn to a green leopard-print dress and camo parka. Heeding Jessica’s advice about making sensible choices, however, I try on a selection of more classic pieces.

I’m not in the changing room long: the second I slip into the soft, silk folds of a black and white kimono dress from the Unique range, I’m sold. It’s pricey (catwalk fashion doesn’t come cheap) but worth every penny, I believe. It’s a statement piece so versatile that it’s timeless too.

Just a couple of hours later, I’m back at the store, this time in my new dress paired with black tights, stiletto ankle boots and my black leather biker jacket. “Perfect,” says Jessica, with a smile of approval. High praise, indeed.

Don’t forget, Edgars account holders can shop on their card at Topshop.

Jessica’s top tips:· Invest in a leather (or good-quality faux

leather) biker jacket. “It’s an iconic piece that goes with everything and always looks effortlessly cool.”

· Experiment with trends but don’t wear them from head to toe. “Rather pick out an element and make it your own.”

· Be bold and mix your prints. “What better place than Africa to play with clashing tribal and animal prints.”

Topshop's Personal Shopping Service is available at Cape Town's V&A Waterfront store only. To book your free appointment (with no minimum spend or obligation to buy), call 021 419 5900.

You want to bring this skin tone to life "with lipstick in shades of deep red or orange-tinged red," says Shahnaz Cola-Wrensch, a Cape Town-based make-up artist and beauty blogger. She also explains that women with olive complexions tend to have a darker natural lip colour. This can affect the appearance of your lipstick so when shopping for a lip colour, always test it directly on your lips. You don't want frosty shades with shimmery finishes. They do nothing to warm your complexion and won’t blend well with your naturally darker lip tone.
