His publishing career started with an anonymous collection of poems, Tamerlane and Other Poems (1827).

He focused on prose writing and spent several years working for literary journals and periodicals. He became known for his own style of literary criticism.

While in Baltimore he married Virginia Clemm, his 13-year-old cousin, in 1835.

In January 1845, his famous poem, "The Raven,” was published.

His wife passed away in 1847 from tuberculosis and Poe was left to himself.

He planned to produce his own journal, The Penn (later renamed The Stylus), but he passed away on October 7, 1849, at the age of 40, in Baltimore, before it could be produced.

The cause of his death is unknown and has attributed to alcohol, brain congestion, cholera, drugs, heart disease, rabies, suicide, tuberculosis, and other factors.

Poe’s WorkPoe’s Work He is known for Gothic fiction works. It is said he followed this genre to

satisfy the public demand.] His themes deal with questions of death, including its physical signs,

the effects of decomposition, concerns of premature burial, the reanimation of the dead, and mourning.

His works are mainly attributed to the dark romanticism genre He also wrote satires, humor tales, and hoaxes. He used irony and

ridiculous extravagance to drive the reader from cultural conformity and for comic relief.

"Metzengerstein", the first story that Poe is known to have published and his first step into horror, was originally written as a burlesque satirizing the popular genre.

Much of his work was centered around using themes that catered for mass market demands. His fiction often included ideas pertaining to phrenology (study of bumps on the outside of the skull to explain a person’s character) and physiognomy (the study of facial features to explain a person’s character).
