This social studies lesson is designed for 5th grade students to learn about ways to improve their school and community as well as identifying a solution to alleviate this problem. This lesson uses Strategy 10: Incorporating Service Learning “Integrating Language Arts and Social Studies” (p. 70-76).

E. Objectives: o NV State Social Studies Standards

H3.5.3 Describe ways individuals display social responsibility.o Student-Friendly Standards

I can describe in writing and orally sharing ways myself and other can show social responsibility.

F. Vocabulary social responsibility – An ethical or ideological theory that an entity, whether it is a

government, corporation, organization or individual, has a responsibility to work for the betterment of society.

G. Procedure: 1. Refer to the textbook “Integrating Language Arts and Social Studies” page 72

“Procedures” before beginning lesson.o Introduce to the class a concern of that affects the school as a whole.

Example, graffiti on the bathroom stalls. Describe to them the solution of having a group of them and yourself could get together to clean the bathroom stalls.

o Explain to them this solution helps their school community become cleaner and easier to be a part of.

o Introduce vocabulary term social responsibility

2. The teacher will then hand out data sheets (p. 74-76) to each individual student. The students will be instructed to fill out the data sheets with ideas they have about improving their school community or community as a whole.

3. Using the data sheet students will pair up with their shoulder partner and discuss their ideas.

4. Students will then be provided with a poster board to tell about the community concern and what solution they wish to use.

5. Students will then present the poster boards to the class whole-group. 6. To help students’ analysis the teacher can ask the following questions:

o What is community service?o What does it mean to have a social responsibility?o Why is it important to help serve your school and/or community?

H. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding?

Data Sheets pg. 74-76: What is the concern? Develop a plan for how your social responsibility as a community member can be used to address this concern. Write down your answer and share with a classmate.

Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson. Students will develop a plan on their data sheet to address a concern in the community. They will then create a poster about the solution they wish to use to address this concern. I will know students understand the concepts of the lesson by their poster board presentations and their data sheets.

I. Closure: A whole class discussion on these questions:

o What did you learn from this project/lesson today?o Did anyone have concerns they were unable to address?o Whose plan was your favorite that you heard today and why?

J. Reflection: 1. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach?

I think the easiest part of this lesson to teach will be the importance of the school and the community around them.

2. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach? The most challenging part of the lesson to teach will be how for students to develop a plan to address the concern.

3. How will you follow up or extend this lesson?

I will follow up by having students actually implement their plans as best as possible. I will extend it by having them write a reflection piece on the plan’s success.

4. What can you do for students who don’t grasp the concepts?For the students who do not grasp the concepts I will have them pair up with my high learning students to have the student be explained the lesson in kid-friendly language.

5. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change?N/A

6. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part?The most difficult part was to fit the standard with the strategy!

7. Explain the strategy from “Integrating Language Arts & Social Studies” that you included in this lesson plan.

The strategy is “Incorporating Service Learning” by having students use data sheets to record their ideas on how to improve their school and/or community. Also to have students create a poster to show a plan they have developed to address this concern in their community.
