Speak My Peace

April 10,1941: Mum is born to bring me forth…

I am forever connected to my childhood. As the foliage transforms tones,

my roots bury deeper into the ground of my past. I return home with each passing day wondering

when my body will accompany my thoughts. Lingering memories etched like a tattoo.

I run my fingers over the ridges as flashbacks appear simultaneously. They come and go, go and come, but never leave for long.

The great old elm, Mum’s voice echoing in the sultry, summer air, Sheba’s bells jingling as she speeds towards me, saskatoons in pie,

hints of cardamom, rhubarb by the side of the road, the smell of chlorine wafting from my skin…

June 25, 1974 5:09am: I am born to a beautiful woman…

I am forever connected to life before my first breath. This was not my first appearance on Earth, nor will it be my last.

Germany WWII, I saw the bleak light of day and it will never leave my side. I was but a young girl, yet so wise.

Past lives come to haunt me, yet I do not fear. A bridge between there and now is often felt on the hair of my arms

and the back of my neck… a cold breeze in a still room.

an energy when there is no one but me, yet I do not fear, nor do I fully understand.

August 3, 2003 9:49am: Her life is taken from the inside out…

I am forever empathetic Overly forgiving at an emotional cost.

Human nature does not change its path, unable to break the cycle of forefathers now passed.

Deceit and inhumanity woven so deep immunity creeps in and introduces itself. Maniacal is thy name.

Thich Nhat Hahn

The universality of human rights is laughed upon.Cringing from injustices worldwide and next door.

Oppression of man, woman, and child. The flow of blood, crimson in hue, does not prevent the abuse of

power. A concomitant demand for humanity surfaces

as superiority rears its ugly head.

May 23, 2015: Graduation Day

Personal wears have not altered with time, but convictions are ten-fold. A crossroads appears, a fork in the road.

Which path to choose clouds my judgment. Falling back on my childhood for the answers, and a beacon appears.

“This is the only life you have been given…” she says, and my hand involuntary reaches out.

Pounding heart, light heart, unchained heart. I walk forward with my hands held tight to the lifeblood of my offspring,

hands held tight to humanityfor only they can direct my path.

Life has already started evolving through an alternate lens…
