Single-Format, Single-Audience

• Scenario: Need to develop web-based or ILT only

• Design Considerations• Develop individual outputs

• Strategies for reuse• Page or Asset (graphic, audio text, etc.)

This is the typical scenario where most other LCMS products and stand-alone authoring tools compete.

Reuse is important.

Single-Format, Multiple-Audiences

• Scenario: Pharmaceutical company needs to train manufacturing operators, quality assurance staff and maintenance staff that work in the manufacturing plant

Manufacturing Operator Quality Associate

Single-Format, Multiple-Audiences

• Design Considerations• What content is relevant to everyone vs. a specific audience?

• How do you make the shared content relevant without making it so generic it’s useless?

• How do you write content so that it’s reusable across audiences?

• How do you create media so it has continuity across audiences?

• How do you deal with examples?

Single-Format, Multiple-Audiences

• Strategies for reuse• Map out and chunk content that is shared vs. content that

is specific

• Create writing and media standards

• Write shared content without referring to any particular audience

• Add audience specific content around the shared content

Multiple-Formats, Single-Audience

• Scenario: A technology company wants to offer blended learning for its customers. Before ECP After ECP• FrameMaker Study

Guide

• PowerPoint Matched Visuals

• Excel Paper Assessments

• Web Authoring Tools e-Courses

Page 10: ECP - taking your EKP content to the next level Andrew Lupton

Multiple-Formats, Multiple-Audiences

• Scenario: Global corporation has multiple brands and multiple geographies, needs multiple formats (procedures, job-aids, check-lists, print and web), and wants custom materials for each location.

Page 11: ECP - taking your EKP content to the next level Andrew Lupton

Multiple-Formats, Multiple-Audiences

• Design Considerations:• How to accommodate differences between formats? (e.g. Print v. Web)

• How to accommodate differences in content requirements? (e.g. Classroom v. e-learning)

• How to accommodate differences in content across audiences? (e.g. brands, geography, equipment, products, etc.)

• How to accommodate different languages?

• Strategies for reuse:• Library of global standards

• Food safety, management practices, product procedures

• Metadata vocabulary management strategy; tagging and filtering methods

• Create alternate content for slight variation between audiences

• Filter by profile

Example

• ABC International, a global manufacturer and distributor of healthcare products sold into consumer markets.

• Marketing product information is used to train their worldwide sales staff.

• Currently they fly everyone to the UK for training.• Want to take the marketing materials and create e-

learning content.• They have an intranet site which provides reference

material, presentations, etc. It’s not tracked or managed

Implementing ECP

• Analysis of Output Formats and Content Samples – The deliverable is an information architecture which

represents the recommended reusability model for content development.

• Configuring Authoring Templates– The deliverable is a set of templates which represent the

taxonomy for the authoring process.

• Training for Core Development team– Performed by GVM either on site or via virtual classroom.

Legacy Content Migration

• Convert from another XML format– You can map to the ECP schemas and use the import utility.

• Convert from PowerPoint– Standard capability

• Convert from Word or FrameMaker– Need to analyze the documents to see if styles are consistent. – Typically they are not and the cost of automating the conversion will be

prohibitive. – Custom transformations will be required.

• Convert from another e-learning authoring tool– It can be difficult to do due to proprietary formats.– May be possible if the format is basically “ILT presented as HTML on-line”.
