Spring is here! Of course, sometimes in the great northwest areas of Pennsylvania, winter often has a way of giving us one last blast we weren’t quite ready for. One of the ladies I work with informed me of the “old wives tale” that says our daffodils and crocus’ will be covered with snow three times before spring arrives. I hadn’t heard that particular tale before, but it sounds about right. I think those three snows have come and gone, so let’s hope it holds true and we can begin to enjoy longer and sunnier days. I’m excited for April because I’m looking forward to an adventure with some of my friends. One of my very strong and speedy friends managed to qualify for the Boston Marathon, which is quite an accomplishment. So a group of us are taking a road trip to Boston to cheer her along and hopefully make it feel a little less daunting for her. 26.2 miles of running is pretty daunting no matter how you look at it, but we are hoping our encouraging cheers and signs make it a little less so. Adventures with friends are good for the soul.Of course our work continues at Active Aging, Inc. Our Foundation continues to work to raise funds to support our supplemental pet food program for those seniors receiving home delivered meals. Interaction with pets has been shown to offer a variety of health benefits, including reducing stress and boosting moods. We understand that quite often, pets are the only companions our seniors have and that the costs of caring for them can be signifi-cant. While we cannot begin to provide enough resources to fully care for our seniors pets, we hope to alleviate some of the financial burden through this program. Please consider donating to help us continue to assist our community members in this way. Krista Geer

Happy spring! I’m going out on a limb as I write this, assuming that we will be having spring-like weather when you read it. Also, at around the time you are reading this, my son will be graduating from US Coast Guard Basic Training in Cape May, NJ. When he left on February 13th, he was scheduled to graduate on April 6th. Hopefully that is still the case, as many in his training company had come down with the flu. They say that no news is good news, so supposedly he is not one of them. Last month we had our annual Win-nin’ of the Green Reverse Raffle. The Com-munity Center was all dressed up in green as gave some “green” away. What a great event! If you missed it this year, mark your calendar for the Saturday before St. Patrick’s Day in 2019 to join us for the next one. This is really a great facility we have in Meadville. We rent the Community Cen-ter out for all types of events, including wed-dings, showers, family functions, banquets, pancake breakfasts, graduation parties, fu-neral luncheons/dinners, and many others. We’ve added uplighting to the list of things that we can offer here. Proceeds from rentals of our facility are used to provide support to Active Aging, Inc. I hope you’ll consider using this gem right in the heart of Meadville for your next event!Donna CessnaDevelopment Coordinator

APPRISE UpdateAPPRISE, the State Health Insurance Assistance Program for all Medicare beneficiaries resid-ing in Pennsylvania, recently completed anoth-er successful Annual Open Enrollment Period. During Medicare’s Annual Open Enrollment, beneficiaries have the opportunity to compare their current Medicare Advantage Plan or Part D prescription drug plans and make any necessary changes to their coverage for the upcoming year. At Active Aging, Inc., the APPRISE Program re-mains very busy all year. APPRISE counselors are available, by appointment, to give informa-tion to individuals who are new to Medicare, assist with problems or questions about current coverage, and to screen and assist those eligible for Medicare cost-savings programs.Outside of Annual Open Enrollment, there are Special Enrollment Periods (SEP) for individuals who may be eligible to make a change to their current coverage. Below is a list of examples for when a person may qualify for a SEP:You change where you live• I moved to a new address that isn’t in my plan’s service area. • I moved to a new address that’s still in my plan’s service area, but I have new plan options in my new location. • I moved back to the U.S. after living outside the country. • I just moved into, currently live in, or just moved out of an institution (like a skilled nurs-ing facility or long-term care hospital). • I’m released from jail. You lose your current coverage • I’m no longer eligible for Medicaid. • I left coverage from my employer or union (in-cluding COBRA coverage). • I involuntarily lose other drug coverage that’s as good as Medicare drug coverage (creditable coverage), or my other coverage changes and is no longer creditable. • I had drug coverage through a Medicare Cost Plan and I left the plan. • I dropped my coverage in a Program of All-in-clusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) plan. You have a chance to get other coverage• I have a chance to enroll in other coverage of-

fered by my employer or union. • I have or am enrolling in other drug coverage as good as Medicare prescription drug coverage (like TRICARE or VA coverage). • I enrolled in a Program of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) plan. Your plan changes its contract with Medicare• Medicare takes an official action (called a “sanction”) because of a problem with the plan that affects me. • Medicare ends (terminates) my plan’s contract. • My Medicare Advantage Plan, Medicare Pre-scription Drug Plan, or Medicare Cost Plan’s contract with Medicare isn’t renewed. Other special situations• I’m eligible for both Medicare and Medicaid. • I qualify for Extra Help paying for Medicare prescription drug coverage. • I’m enrolled in a State Pharmaceutical Assis-tance Program (SPAP) or lose SPAP eligibility. (This is PACE/PACENET in PA) • I dropped a Medigap policy the first time I joined a Medicare Advantage Plan. • I have a severe or disabling condition, and there’s a Medicare Chronic Care Special Needs Plan (SNP) available that serves people with my condition. • I’m enrolled in a Special Needs Plan (SNP) and no longer have a condition that qualifies as a spe-cial need that the plan serves. • I joined a plan, or chose not to join a plan, due to an error by a federal employee. • I wasn’t properly told that my other private drug coverage wasn’t as good as Medicare drug coverage (creditable coverage). • I wasn’t properly told that I was losing private drug coverage that was as good as Medicare drug coverage (creditable coverage). These Special Enrollment Period situations have been adapted from www.medicare.gov; if you would like to learn more about special enroll-ment period situations, please visit www.medi-care.gov or contact APPRISE.
