    What is Hard Disk Drive?

Sealed Metal HousingThe housing protects the internalcomponents from dust particles that couldblock the gap between the read/write headsand the platters, causing the hard drive tocrash.

Drive SpindleThe drive spindle is connected to a motorwhich spins one or more magneticallycoated platters at several thousandrevolutions per minute. More platters meangreater disk storage capacity.

Head ActuatorThis component moves thecollection of read/write heads acrossthe surface of the platters withextreme accuracy. It aligns the heads

with the tracks that lie in concentriccircleson the platters.

Read/Write HeadThese read/write heads move inunison across the surfaces of theplatters. The heads write data to theplatters by aligning magneticparticles on the surface and read databy detecting the polarity of theparticles.

SectorWhen formatting the hard drive, thecomputer divides the disk into radialsections called sectors.

TrackCircular and concentric pathsthe read/write heads follow

    when reading information fromthe disk.

    CD / CD-R / CD-RW Compact Disc Read-Only Memory Used for data

storage and data transfer. A standard 120mm CD-ROM holds 650 or 700 Mb of data

CD-RW recorder can rewrite 700 MB of data to aCD-RW disc roughly 1000 times.

CD-RW recorders can also write CD-R discs. Exceptfor the ability to completely erase a disc, CD-RWsact very much like CD-Rs.

CD-RWs cannot be read in CD-ROM drives built

prior to 1997. CD-R is considered a better technology for

archival purposes as disc contents cannot bemodified.

DVD / DVD-R / DVD-RWDigital Versatile Disc or Digital Video Disc

is an optical disc storage media for data

storage, including movies with high qualityvideo and sound.

DVDs resemble compact discs as theirphysical dimensions are the same but

they are encoded in a different formatand at a much higher density allowing fora greater data capacity of about 4.7 GB
